So many amazing Steely Dan tracks if you wanna jump down the rabbit hole. "Reelin' in the Years", "My Old School", "Kid Charlemagne", "Ricky Don't Lose That Number", "Pretzel Logic", "Babylon Sisters", and finally every single song off their iconic "Aja" album (but "Peg", "Black Cow", and "Deacon Blues" are highlights for me).

This whole album (their debut) was EVERYWHERE when it came out…at least among the early twenties people who were my contemporaries. This was part of the soundtrack music for great parties……or just chillin’ at home.

As you delve further into the Dan rabbit hole, you'll keep shakin'. Their beats are impeccable. When this song (their first release) hit the radio, we were all blown away. This band is very special. I'd suggest My Old School next from their second album. Or just leap ahead to FM (No Static At All) next and get into classic Dan, that wasn't released on an album but on the soundtrack of the movie FM. And wait until you get to the Aja and Gaucho albums... I can't wait to sse your reactions!

I lucked out and saw these guys with my dad! He always listened to them as long as I can remember, so one year for father's day I got him a couple tickets. I thought he'd bring one of his childhood friends. Nope. He brought me. It was a wicked awesome concert!

The overwhelming favorite to your question will be "Reelin' in the Years", which I have heard Jimmy Page describe as his fav. guitar solo by somebody else. Not confirmed, perhaps it's in the Anthology Book by him that I haven't read most of. Killer song and probably one of their hardest.

We got to see Allison Krause and Union Station in Omaha a few years back, and the (older) lady taking tickets said to us, "Did you see Steely Dan here last night?" We told her no. She said..."They blew the roof off the place." - This from a woman in her late 70's.

So many Steely Dan songs Hasan undertone of battling addiction, the lyrics are so subtle, yet it's there. also, many songs deal with relationship s gone bad, with a wink! Never knew that growing up, then a recovering addict mentioned that,. Listening in a whole new way last 20 years! 😎..keep em coming.👍

Fun fact: Steely Dan knowingly took their name from a literary sex toy. ‘Steel Dan’ was the name William S. Burroughs, one of the more famous "beat generation" poets, gave to the dildo that appears in his seminal work Naked Lunch, an unflinching novel that, through a series of interlinked vignettes, explores the control of human consciousness - whether that be through sex, drugs, money, or political power. It is a highly unsettling work that, like Camus’ The Stranger, has been allowing undergraduates to appear intellectual as they ogle each other from across the lunch room floor ever since its publication.

If you’re not familiar with the sitar (accent on first syllable), listen to Within You and Without You by The Beatles. George Harrison was introduced to the sitar whenI in India and brought it to western music. I used to listen to an album of sitar music when I was studying back in the 60’s. Ah……those were the days. 😉
@ohfour-seven6228 Жыл бұрын
And Brian Jones of The Stones played the sitar too.
@eximusic Жыл бұрын
The solo on this song isn't a sitar. It's a guitar called the Coral electric "sitar" which is just a 6 six string guitar with a block under the strings near the bridge to make them buzz like a sitar. Sitar is actually a completely different instrument with a different number of strings, length of neck, moveable frets, made of a gourd, and picked with a wire "mizrab" which wraps around your index finger. This solo was played with a pick on a sitar sounding guitar.

The person responsible for cutting the solo should have had to serve time. And you WILL listen to all of their songs eventually, and be glad you did!

This us what perfection seekers sound like. .every detail and instrument must work in perfect harmony. Donald demands it, the "band" is him and Jeff. .all the other instrumentalists are hand picked.. for each SONG as well as the entire album!! The percussion solo at the beginning of this song is a MAJOR HOOK, you're toast by the time everyone else joins in... There's no band that matches the chameleon array of what they produce... It's an amazing sound, amazing attention to detail and creativity all let loose at the same time .. Steely Dan is the creme de la creme of hypnotic musical creativity.. enjoy the ride . Hope you eventually delve into the AJA album.. a whole new experience!! PEACE!!
