This was an absolute mid 90's anthem! Any time it would come on in the local rock club the whole crowd would be singing along. Saw them many years ago at Brixton academy in London and it was awesome.

The Offspring has gone through many different sounds throughout their career. They started in the 80's and got mainstream recognition in the 90's with the album Smash. Self Esteem is from the Smash Album which came out in the early 90's during the grunge era, hints why the sound of this song has a grunge flavor to it. They really came into their own during the late 90's with their album Americana. That is the The Offspring sound people are most familiar with, pretty much anything from the late 90's through the 2010's

I wouldn’t call Offspring Pop Punk. They got a little Poppy when they were at the peak of their Mainstream stint during the early 2000s. But Offspring put on probably the best Punk performance I’ve ever seen Live. And I’ve seen a good amount of Punk performances live.

Offspring were one of those bands most sides of the hard music scene could get into in the mid 90's, much like Motorhead did in the 70's. Punks, grungys, and metal heads were all listening to this album.

If you want more of their earlier rawer punk sound then their first self titled album The Offspring, their Ignition album, or other tracks off of Smash would be the way to go. While I am an Offspring fan in general, their material got somewhat poppier after the Smash album. (Not a scathing crticism by the way, just an observation.)

Gone Away, if you want an emotional gut-punch. It is a song about loss and it is so powerful and it's a bit slower so you can really hear how melodic they can get.

I see a lot of humor in it as well. He's using humor to simultaneously make fun of the ridiculous situations that we all find ourselves in now and then because we are torn. But to me a lot of it's tongue in cheek and just being a little bit ironic. Having fun with an uncomfortable topic basically. And the music totally kicks ass.

Lots of The Offspring's songs aren't biographical, they're social commentary. In Self Esteem the protagonist is a victim of abuse. Lots of guys have been led to believe that anything is worth getting some. The Offspring definitely bucked the narrative to bring us this one.

Don't worry about Dexter (lead singer for the Offspring) he is doing just fine, got a PHD in molecular biology (I guess in his valedictory speech no one seemed to know who he was or at least get the references that might hurt the self esteem a little), flies planes, got a hot sauce brand, his voice ain't what it used to be but he still doesn't seem to mind and people still pack out to watch him live.

The album with the kid on a swing, the album is called Americana, and The Kids Aren’t Alright is a song on that album.
