I see this song as not at all wanting to die per se, but finally feeling happiness in what was most likely a misery led life. Kind of like when you’ve reached some happy milestone and you think “I can die happy now!”. Morbid a bit but we all want to leave this world (which is inevitable) in some sort of happy place in our life. Who wants to die sad? This song always lifted me up in a seemingly dark way.

‘Stop Me if You Think You’ve Heard This One Before’ and ‘I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish’ are my favorite Smiths songs (I suggested ‘How Soon is Now?’ because it’s more well known, but I still love it.) That was peak Gen X. We'd dress in all black; songs of us still do, and dance to upbeat songs with lyrics about dying. We were the generation that grew up with the spector of nuclear annihilation hanging over our heads from grade school, through our college years. Movies like The Day After were required watching for us. Some of us elders in Gen X were taught to "hide under our desks" in grade school to "save us from a nuclear attack." It's not much of a surprise then that many of us grew up with a "who gives a f*ck" attitude. We never expected to see 30 years old, let alone our late 50's. We were the original Goth generation. The "slackers". The inheritors of punk. The thrash metal fiends. We lived fast because we expected to die young, and didn't care about leaving pretty corpses. Fun fact: today many of us look MUCH younger than previous generations did at our age.

@Wolfsblood11382 ай бұрын
@@Why2names in my experience that's not the case, though I'm not in the UK. Most of the Gen X people I know have only gotten more queer, and leftist the older we've become. Has a large segment of my generation sold out our ideals for the false sense of security that a measure of wealth gave them? Yes, absolutely. Though I do believe that it's a smaller percentage than the boomer hippies who traded in "peace, love, and equality" for stock options.

The Smiths have a unique blend of Post-Punk, New Wave, and Gothic Rock. This song probably leans best in the latter camp but generally it's all encapsulated in that Post Punk ideal which took the simplicity, culture, and attitude of Punk and applied different textures and dynamics to the sounds, such as not using distortion, using clean vocals, or having happy-sounding lyrics. Goth as you might know, is an ideal of finding beauty or attraction to the dark, sad, and/or gruesome. This song finds the beauty of the unity and love between a couple that die together in a tragic car accident. That's the very essence of Goth.

Careful about shouting out to Morissey.. He's ... quite the character these days.. A lot of the older british rock stars kinda became insufferable scumbags. Nick Cave wrote a piece about him that was pretty descriptive and savage. It is what it is, I usually say with artists as they age. The music remains, but it's often times good to just not look into these guys. Clapton is another one of those guys that gives most people an enormous YIKES! when they learn about his present state of mind. Morrissey's music is amazing though. That's just a fact. This one in particular is one of my favorites. As a bipolar somewhat suicidal (in my 20s) guy, this one really stuck to my soul. I can still taste that decade when I hear this song. I can imagine this song being pretty powerful for people who struggle with suicidal ideation. It's one of those songs that makes me go "did this hyper-depressing song tip anyone over the edge..." Not that I'd blame the artist or anything, it's just something I wonder because it definitely went on repeat in my head during the darkest moments.
