I first heard The Smiths in 1983 and fell in love with their music and lyrics. I was lucky enough to see them play live in both 1985 and 1986 and their gigs were celebratory experiences. I hope Nick & Lex react to more Smiths songs.

There is a beautiful scene in the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off, when they are in the art gallery and this song is used. It is such a stunning piece of cinematography that fits in so well with the music. Such a melancholy song of sheer desperation and heartache. You guys gotta check out the piece from the film. It's a slightly different instrumental version but just so melodic it hurts.

It's a mandolin near the end of the song that you thought was some Italian instrument. I love The Smiths & Morrissey, they have some of the funniest lyrics while still being able to make heartfelt sorrowful songs like this one as well.

Yes, it's one of those little songs that with time you tend to return to again and again... From the "singles side" of The Smiths, who used to release singles with new songs unrelated to the albums they had just released. Those singles-only songs, usually shorter and punchier than those released in the official albums, were then collected in their own album compilations such as Hatful of Hollow. This was another reference to the old times, when the first albums were basically collections of singles previously released and before artists began to think of the album as an entity that could be created all at once. The Smiths released a number of "singles albums" during its lifetime and Morrissey continued to do so in his solo career. Some of the very best Smiths songs were originally standalone singles, such as this one, "Half a Person", "How Soon Is Now?", "William, It Was Really Nothing", "Shoplifters of the World Unite" and "Panic".
@richarddobson815Ай бұрын
Short and sweet, this encapsulates all that is great about The Smiths. Many of their great songs struggle to get past three minutes long which I think enhances their impact. This particular track was the B side on the 'William It Was Really Nothing' single and Hatful of Hollow was a compilation album comprising singles, B sides and recordings for BBC radio shows. Originally released in 1984 in the UK, I think, it wasn't released in the US until 1993. Instead Sire (their US label) released Louder Than Bombs which was a mash up of some of the Hatful.. songs and songs from another UK compilation called The World Won't Listen. The Smiths were so prolific, in their four years together, and in many instances the songs on the compilations are even better than their studio album songs. It's best to just buy everything they did! So glad you live them guys!

I know how you feel Lex about wanting to share a band you know and love. That's why we keep writing suggestions here (even though there's no way in a couple lifetimes to ever get to them all). For instance, Scott Walker's "The Old Man's Is Back Again". Vocals are great but the bass in the song is so good you'll be happy you listened. There's so many great Smiths songs.

This one always gets me, and mainly because I identified so much with it, hearing it soon after my marriage to the brilliant princess went kaput...and a new more suitable prospect had entered my life. Pretty in Pink had the song, associated with the Jon Cryer character I imagine. "How Soon Is Now" is the better dance song, but this has the better feels. I featured it on my final mixtapes back in the early '90s. Thanks y'all. Merry Christmas!

Yay, I have been looking forward to more Smiths/Morrisey. A rich seam of great music and lyrics ❤ My take on this one is that it’s simply Stephen Morrissey, lonely and desperate for love (physical and emotional) and acceptance. Like many of their songs. But as always, so poetic.

I was born in the very first NHS hospital “Park Hospital” in Urmston, Manchester. As was Stephen Morrissey. I walked past Johnny Marr, in my local Tesco a few months ago, he was on the phone, so I didn’t ask for a picture 😢 That joke isn’t funny anymore is possibly my favourite. By the way as a life long Waterboys fan, have you listened to “This is the sea” with !ex yet? 🤷♂️

The Dream Academy did a, dare I say, even better cover of this song that appeared in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Morrissey approved their Cover version if I remember correctly.. Their Cover is very true to the original style yet longer and a little more 60s Psychedelic.

Sad, depressive, yes. But Morrissey takes it to such a melodramatic extreme -- intentionally -- that it also becomes funny at the same time. One of my favorite lyrics is "And there are brighter sides to life, and I should know because I've seen them…" [You're thinking, "wait, did Morrissey just sing something positive?"] Until he drops the rejoinder, "… but not often." If you want to do an album, "Hatful of Hollow". Every song is great, but This Night Has Opened My Eyes, is beautiful.

This is so damn beautiful, maybe the most perfect short song ever. I have a very short list of uber short songs, Rock & Roll - Zep, Don't Believe a Word - Thin Lizzy and this gem. I always see this song in a positive way! Odd I know, but hear me out. I think as many a bad deal I've been dealt, let the next one be the one, not in a gambler but in a metaphor way. I think the same when people say things about long losing streaks, or say "we haven't seen sunshine for many days" I retort: Today is one day nearer to when that streak is broken. Please x3 does that for me! Oh Check out Muse's live versio of this - epic!
