Pushit got me through the toughest time in my life. This album came out when my father was dying of terminal cancer. I was 17 and I was not handling it well at all. It cleared my head and gave me a comforting feeling when I needed it most.
@charliehunter92574 жыл бұрын
I sympathize. Death is something we are all aware of, and seem to like to pretend it doesn't get to us. But with cancer, you are forced into the unfortunate task of dealing with it slowly (as was the case in my family) and prolonging grief in ludicrous ways. When a loved one is dying like that, you begin the grief process while they are still alive, and that is just not easy on anybody. Thankfully, we have music... art... literature to make things more tolerable. At the very least, hearing something that reminds you that you are not alone in these feelings, that can go a long ways in helping a person. This was my real existential Tool album as well.

Alrighty, then Picture this if you will 10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes In my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51 Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thingy When just then a flaming stealth banana split the sky Like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this Cutting right angle donuts on a dime And stopping right at my Birkenstocks And me yelping, "holy fucking shit!" Holy fucking shit! Holy fucking shit! Holy fucking shit! Holy fucking shit! Holy fucking shit! Holy fucking shit! Then the X-File being Looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan With Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of Vanilla Chig Champa Did a slow-mo Matrix descent Outta the butt end of the banana vessel And hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw And my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip And all I could think was "I hope Uncle Quark here doesn't notice That I pissed my fuckin' pants" So light in his way, like an apparition, that He had me crying out "Fuck me, it's gotta be The Deadhead Chemistry The blotter got right on top of me Got me seein' E-motherfuckin'-T!" And after calming me down With some orange slices And some fetal spooning E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose He said, "You are the chosen one The one who will deliver the message A message of hope for those who choose to hear it And a warning for those who do not" Me, the chosen one They chose me And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school You'd better You'd better You'd better You'd better listen Then he looked right through me With somniferous almond eyes Don't even know what that means Must remember to write it down This is so real Like the time Dave floated away See, my heart is pounding 'Cause this shit never happens to me I can't breathe right now! It was so real Like I woke up in Wonderland All sorta terrifying I don't wanna be all alone While I tell this story And can anyone tell me why You all sound like Peanuts parents? Will I ever be coming down? This is so real Finally, it's my lucky day See, my heart is racing 'Cause this shit never happens to me I can't breathe right now You believe me, don't you? Please believe what I've just said! See the Dead ain't touring And this wasn't all in my head See, they took me by the hand And invited me right in Then they showed me something I don't even know where to begin Strapped down to my bed Feet cold and eyes red I'm out of my head Am I alive? Am I dead? Can't remember what they said God damn, shit the bed Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position Such a heavy burden now to be the one Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending To write it down for all the world to see But I forgot my pen Shit the bed again Typical Strapped down to my bed Feet cold and eyes red I'm out of my head Am I alive? At my deepest despair, I grasped on to the line "if when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay. This is on point! Push It stands on its own and is insane. But, then the first time you hear Maynard, "we going to try something a little different. We need you to find a comfortable space, but vulnerable as well". My god, how wonderful, no one talked like that back then. And then you journey off with Tool on something so familiar but new. And you love it! But then through random listening; the studio version hits your speakers and you recall the awe of that sound of Push It from Aenima and get completely caught up in this epic song. Die Eier Von Satan always made me feel like I was inside a WWII era Volkswagen production factory 🏭 given the very mechanical/steam oriented sounds found on this track..and no eggs.

This song was the one that got me hooked on TOOL. My first love so to speak. Thank you for reacting to the masterpiece, and keep 'em coming.

Not everything is as it seems right? Die Eier von Satan sounds like some Hitler speech (harsh German language, people in the background cheering...) but in the end the singer just talks about a recipe for hash cookies. Talking bout books and them covers right
@oregonwoodelf4 жыл бұрын
I read that Die Eier Von Satan (which the lyrics translate from German to a recipe for hash cookies) was meant to contrast with "Message To Harry Manback". The later being a somewhat softly spoken voicemail, which was actually left to somebody in the band. The message is vulgar, though. It's like an interlude skit. You should listen to that one by itself real quick (it's only 1:53 and you've already reacted to the songs before and after it, so can't really solo it?). They have polarizing tones in atmosphere from their messages.

What’s more Halloweenie than the Smashing Pumpkins? “Here Is No Why” An amazing hidden gem.

"We only come out at night" is most most Halloweenie Pumpkins song of all, haha. More seriously, "Where boys fear to tread" would be great for a reaction.

I remember back in the day, putting my headphones with my portable cd player in hand and just laid down on my bed listening to this whole album from A to Z without even worrying how long the whole thing lasted and then when done, somehow, it felt like coming to, from what? who cares!! but it was like I had just returned to earth at that moment, totally hypnotic.

Hm. I had listened to the album before, but I revisited 'Pushit' recently, and I've been listening to it on repeat. The other day, as it opened - with the violins - this came to mind: "In the discomfort of tension, the burdensome disruption of violence is welcomed. " I don't know what interpretations have been made out there; sometimes I will look for them at times, but other times I don't. In this song, I think about people who have been put through extreme situations: who have been forced/manipulated to do things they didn't want to (Stockholm Syndrome perhaps?). And it just makes me think about how it doesn't matter how powerful one is - when a person manipulate someone else, they can sort of deliberate the effects they produce on the surface, but they do not have full control of what comes out the other side. The manipulated - put through the extreme - may just find out exactly what it is they're capable of. So to me, this song can be about abuse, manipulation, and what it takes to escape such a cycle. Near the end, the song refers back to its opening line. So it is cyclic in a way - maybe in more than one way... The lyrics refer to being somewhere the person doesn't want to be... There's strong feelings of attachment involved... And the narrative does end in a violent climax. Also, "Choke this infant here before me. / What is this but my reflection?" makes me think of the loss of innocence... Somehow, 'Pushit' also makes me think of 'Fear Inoculum' (the song). I feel they have similar - or at least overlapping - themes. But this one allows you to experience the tension more closely - while 'Fear Inoculum' feels like a trance and an awakening at the same time. It's almost like they're not grieving the loss of innocence at the end, you know? The answer is not "going back", but inoculating oneself with these potential evils and attempting to build an immunity.

Maynard is an amazing vocalist, hard to nail down what his best performances are, for me a bunch that come to mind are Lateralus, Culling Voices, Rosetta Stoned, The Grudge, and Vicarious. But ask me tomorrow and I may give you a completely different list.

Fun fact: Maynard is studied in Brazilian jujitsu and once during a performance of this song he got fed up with some knucklehead coming up on stage and gave him a flip through the air, put him in a rear naked choke and proceeded to pin and spoon the fan for almost the entire song, singing directly into his ear and not missing a note the entire time LOL

Maynard does have an instrumental quality to his voice and he uses it superbly. For more and imho his best, listen to more A Perfect Circle. (Fiddle and the Drum, off the Emotive album for example)
