The French lyrics were commissioned and approved by the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec in 1880 and written by Adolphe-Basile Routhier. It was translated/commissioned into English by Robert Stanley Weir in 1908 (the English version does not fully match the French version). The Canadian government officially declared both versions independently are the national anthem of Canada in 1980 with royal assent being granted to the National Anthem Act.
