That's so cool! With all the slides, is it possible to pitch it in G at all by extending it?

Thank you very much. It is possible to pull the slide out that is connected to the top rotary valve which would lower it to Ab. But it will not go all the way down to G. That was a very good question. Thank you for your interest and thank you for watching.

I'm kind of confused on what the differences between flugelhorns, trumpets, mellophones and cornets are. From what I've gathered, flugelhorns are part of the tuba's family and the shape of the pipe is an important factor, but I'm still pretty confused.

There are videos that do a great job explaining the differences. I will do my best to summarize: Trumpets historically have had longer sections of tubing where the diameter is constant. Cornets historically have more sections during which the diameter grows. The flugelhorn takes this further, partly by placing the mouthpiece closer to the valve section, and allowing for more growth of diameter to occur afterward. The purpose of course is to affect the tone. The longer the diameter stays the same, the brighter the sound is, while the longer the diameter can grow, the more mellow the sound is. It helps to study images closely to see the differences, as well as recordings.

A mellophone is a marching french horn. A flugelhorn is a valved bugle. It's got a wider and more conical bore than a trumpet. Cornets evolved from putting rotary valves on a posthorn. They typically have a more conical bore than a trumpet, but less than a flugelhorn. Trumpets have majority cylindrical bore, which is why the tone is brighter than cornets and flugelhorns.
