In 2016, Gav and I were invited by Richard Latto of BBC South to view some newly discovered Dalek footage. This is the story of the Daleks in the footage and my experience of the day...

hi, great videos as always. Re the Leicester event. I was at one event there, I guess that’s the one? i presume the BBC only did one around that tine? i was born in 57, so as i young boy that must have been it. I remember a part set of Z Cars, mainly the front desk and possibly a front half of a police car, with screen behind to simulate the moving road?? But i certainly remember a Dalek moving about, it was the most stunning thing i’d seen then. i confession, i stood on the back Fender and held on to it for a few seconds, (sorry) probably until my parents grabbed me. remit was looking seeing a pop star. I can’t remember much else. obviously the first tine i’d seen one and not in Black and white. i would love to see photos from the event

Hi Greg! Thank you thats a great story! Can you remember exactly where the event took place? If you look at 0.54 of the video, the image on the right with the man with his hands on the Dalek was actually taken at the Leicester event. So could be the same Dalek you also touched!

Hi, sorry for late reply, I asked her the other day, but sadly she can’t remember when or anything else about it. I wish I could see more of it, I wonder if the local paper had anything?

Re the Leicester event, guess it was late Jan. to April 1965, Lady Mayor there I guess ? Judging by the chain of office. Hope so some in Leicester has still a photo, mind you back then, not many people took photos, except Weddings and Holidays.

The first "real" Dalek I ever saw was at the Blackpool Doctor Who Exhibition in 1974! Two of the Daleks in the Dalek Cavern were motorised, and ran on tracks! Apparently, they often broke down. I never noticed at the time, but looking at photos now, the discs on the eye stalks are set too far back, close to the dome, and some of the hemispheres are wonky! Happy days! 👍😂

Thanks for making this, I was curious to find out how it had come about. I keep thinking about doing a documentary series about the props.

I never could understand how the owners let the Daleks get in such poor condition. With something so popular and rare, you’d have thought they would have taken better care of them. Were they just extremely frail? The one was missing a part of its neck rings and the other looked to be missing its eyestalk. Notice how the gunstick nearly falls out of the gunbox at 3:23
@Dalek63885 жыл бұрын
It was just down to the sheer workload they were doing I guess. Dalek One was in Glasgow and Leicester just weeks before this Southampton event. And its possible it went elsewhere too. You can see in the pictures that the public had close access to them, so I guess they were just manhandled. I'm not sure it would happen today!

My guess is that you may have gone to Barnes Common, the location where Ian and Barbra first met the Doctor and Susan English in the classic 1964 novelisation of the first Dalek story, plus it was used in 'An Adventure in Space and Time' as a sort of inside joke for us fans (I don't know if they went there 'for real' though) likewise it would seem to have been used for 'The Day of the Doctor' as well. Just a wild guess though as I may be completely wrong but I gave it a go anyways. Please ignore my comment, as I've just checked the comments below and found out that it was linked to the production of 'The Sea Devils'. I thought that what turned out to be a picture of the sea, was supposed to be a close up of the road in the middle of nowhere, and as you said that it had a connection to 'our show' I gave a quick and wild guess. One question though, and please, please don't get the wrong idea (its not as if you could share any pictures on KZbin anyway) but did you see any nudists, be they Sea Devils or humans?
@Dalek63885 жыл бұрын
Hehe not quite! The location is actually in the image thats on screen when I mention it..... Something more Pertwee related :)

Would you mind looking into a film I've got please. The film is a different version of doctor who and the daleks. here is what I do know: A cut down version of the movie was released in the mid 70s. It was released in colour, on super 8mm, in 2 parts. Not many copies of the film were made because it wasn't selling, as the price was to high. The version I've got is a black and white print. Strangely my film is silent with those 20s still captions. I only have the first part and my film is damaged. All the film is still there it hasn't been burnt or anything but its got a brake. If you decide to look into it I've got a short video of it on my old KZbin channel.

It never fails to amaze me how happy the BBC seemed to be in the 60's and 70's to allow footage of the insides of the Daleks (people being inside Daleks to be more specific) to be shown on BBC news and chat shows. Did this not damage the whole imagery of the Daleks for the kids at the time? I mean I've never to this day seen even a backstage picture of a Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck performer at Disneyworld with their character head off let alone an interview with one minus costume head on a news show and I know Disney would go absolutely ballistic if it ever happened.
@marcse7en4 жыл бұрын
An excellent point! The Daleks, and how they work, SHOULD have remained a mystery! I believe Susan herself said "Do you think there's somebody inside?" Showing that there WAS indeed a little man in a cardigan with crazy hair, trundling the Dalek around with his feet, somewhat shatters the illusion of terror? 👎😂😂😂
