The reason why European and Asian engines (Eurasian engines) like to rev high is because they are mostly square engines which are designed for power, unlike American v8s which are over square engines designed to produce torque. That's why in America they used to produced cars with 3 speed manuals where as the Eurasian engines had to have more gears (closer ratios due to lower torque ).

I owned a 1969 4cyl for a bit back in my 20s (1990s). After yanking the fuel injection, which was horrible, and putting in a 4 stack set of very illegal for CA Dellorto's, it really came to life! Intake noise was fantastic. Things I hated: Shifting was just awful. The long linkage bar between the stick and the transmission, along with the long shift cable that wrapped around from the rear towards the front of the transmission, which was behind the engine, really made fast shifting impossible. And the gearbox, because of the long linkage was just so vague. Also, getting into reverse was a pain. Push down on the shifter, then left and up if I remember correctly. Heat exchangers. I lived in CA, so not a huge deal, but they never worked well. Electrical. It was in bad shape when I got it and just kept getting worse, eventually it was the demise of the car. In the end, the car went to my uncle who pulled the engine and put it in a dune buggy. Not sure what happened to the chassis. :( Suspension was horridly stiff in the '69. It was great in the turns, but for every day driving it was miserable. They did adjust the rear suspension rate on the '70 models if I remember correctly. Things I loved: Handling was unsurpassed. I have never driven a car that handles better than the 914. So neutral. Once going on a 300 degree onramp in the rain, the back end kicked out. It took just a slight steering adjustment and it was back on track. I was so impressed that I did it on purpose once more just to see if I was imagining things. I wasn't. As to the suspension, it was 911 front, and the trailing arms were from a VW 412. It got the job done! The top came off! It stored nicely in the rear deck and was reasonably water tight when the rain came (for a 1969!). Looks. I've always loved the looks. Still do. I'd love to get one as a retirement car, but they are either overpriced or require a full restoration. Then again, I'm not sure if my back could handle it! Thanks for a great episode, Jay!

Funny thing about the very sloppy shifting - Put about 100K on my 914-6 and never missed a shift. Once you got used to where the gears were it was just fine. I know many who took a test drive didn’t like the shifter or the pattern, but it just worked. So well that I never did the upgrade to the newer linkage on my car. Best driver’s car I ever owned without question.

@J F About the shifting … Reverse is simply straight up from 1st, no lockout whatsoever. It’s very easy, too easy actually, to get into reverse. Though I wouldn’t call it “awful”, it’s true the early cars from ’70 to ’72 (there wasn’t a 1969 model year) had a somewhat vague shift linkage. It was dramatically improved on the 4-cylinder models starting with the ’73 model year.

Such an amazing video! I would have never thought that Randy would love the poor little 914, out of all the cars that I've seen him drive. He was really able to express how all 914 owners feel about their cars. I have one myself and have been working on it since the late 90s. I recently got to drive it on the road again for the first time since 99 it was absolutely incredible experience. My 914 now has a modernish VW 1.8t engine with a big turbo in it, all going through a boxster transmission with a gt2 shifter, it's making about 320+hp and is a total rocket. It can be driven totally normal till 3000rpm but after 5000rpm watch out as it explodes down the road right to the 8000rpm redline. I weighed it at my work and it was only 2080 pounds after all of my modifications.

That was a gift from god for a former 914 owner! What a car! I've driven several different sports cars over the years, English, Italian, German...and the 914 1.7 I owned was hands-down the best. No, the fuel-injected 1.7 didn't have enough power (is there ever enough power?) but with the 5-speed close ratio box, it got up and going pretty good. I got a top speed run of 117mph from mine, and it was a well-used car at that point. I worked nights at the time and one night on the way to work a cop pulled me over, clocked me at 90 and I'd had no idea I was going that fast. Pays to be a nurse, I was in my scrubs and he gave me a bit of professional courtesy and let me off the hook. I made a sharp left turn on a wet corner and spun the car a complete 360, wound up pointing in the direction I wanted and just kept on going. Only do that in a mid-engine car. Thanks Jay, you've made this old goat feel young again!

I ALWAYS liked the aesthetics of the 914. As an early teen, the car’s lines struck me as exotic. Unfortunately, I never had an opportunity to drive one. Until… In 1983, my then girlfriend bought an orange 1971 914-4. My girlfriend’s mechanic yanked the stock engine out, replacing it with the later 2.0 liter. Fuel injection was supplanted by 2 42mm (?) Dellorto dual carburetors. New cams and valves (sodium filled) completed the transformation. So THIS was my first experience with a 914! What a thrill. My friend has a 1997 911 Carrera. I’ve accompanied him to a few Porsche shows each year. (PorscheWerke in Monterey this past Summer) He is continually annoyed with me as I always gravitate to the 914 entrants’ cars instead of the 911s. I don’t care. First loves (more ways than one) always get primacy of place. I recently purchased a front mid-engined 2001 Honda S2000. I was pleased to have it mentioned favorably during this episode. Thank you, Randy, for sharing your knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm. Safe travels. ✌🏻

I remember when the 914 was introduced at my local VW dealership Renfro Motors in Orange, CA and they gave away flower shaped stickers and we all lined up to get one. As a kid I didn’t understand the controversy about VW vs Porsche all I knew was I liked the car just like the way I loved the Karman Ghia. My first car in 1978 was a 1966 VW bug and there’s nothing like like the experience of your first car. I paid $900 for the car and my insurance was $1,100. The sense of freedom of your first car was amazing and now that the government is doing all they can to get rid of the ICE cars it’s heartbreaking because the truth is it’s all about controlling all aspects of daily life including your freedom of movement.

Have a niece who had just received her drivers permit a few years ago. She was the typical extremely nervous and inexperienced driver. The first time she backs out of a parking space she slams into a freshly restored vintage porsche 914. Her debut driving experience was very memorable, and very expensive!

Have you ever owned one? Sold my real 914-6, which had a modded 2.4 … and a good suspension … never missed it! But you can go into a corner, with little brakes (they’re crap anyhow) … and just yank the wheel. It is pretty cool

The problem is Porsche fans only want a 911 as their top car/race car. Remember when they brought out the 928 which was supposed to be the 911 replacement. Porsche fans still wanted the 911 at the top of the line. Luckily Porsche has been able to tweak that design to get a fantastic performance car but it also caused the company to nearly go under. The cheaper cars like the 914 and later the Boxer along with some of their other less sporty cars like SUVs saved Porsche's bacon.

Have a good one.

@@klausschreyer7062 Thanks, yeah the 911 is tricky to drive ,but can definitely be driven well, especially in later versions,. One thing they say is nail the throttle harder in the corners in a 911 and don't lift off the throttle! That said, the 914 is a really great handling car, so well balanced and light! Kinda like a big go cart and lots of fun!
