for those that love echidnas.. i'm an aussie and my dad used to work /volunteer in retirement for a conservation group protecting the bilby (another interesting animal).. he was forever complaining about the echidnas because they were trying to protect the bilby from feral cats and they spent a fortune (and a lot of time) fencing off a massive area.. and then... they had to inspect the fences daily because the echidnas would come through over night and if they found a fence, they would dig underneath it to get to the other side and let all the predators in LOL.. apparently they would dig huge tunnels like about 6 foot deep.. 🤣

Fun fact: they can also be really cuddly and affectionate! I remember when I went to a wildlife rescue sanctuary in Tasmania. A staff member entered the echidna enclosure to feed them, and all of them ran up to her, eagerly swarming around her legs. As she was going around feeding them, they still kept following her around like puppies even after they were full, and finally she gave in and sat down on the ground cross-legged so they could all clamber into her lap for the snuggles and attention they wanted. And the ones that noticed me through the clear enclosure barrier ran up to me as well and stood up against the glass trying to reach up to me! I had never realised echidnas have so much personality!

They can’t just take a blood sample and sequence the DNA like they do with parrots?
@lagggoat7170
@lagggoat7170 Ай бұрын
Also you need reference data (A DNA sequence with nothing to compare it too is just a long molecule) and I doubt much reference data exists of a rare, weird animal. It works for parrots because they are also pets (and even if you dont have data for species A, you might have some for species B which is related enough to compare to. I worked on a common wild grass yet I needed to use rice and wheat as reference because nobody cared to look at every reed gene. Monotremes are a weird group compared to basically any animal, so you could only compare Echidna to Echidna and the next closest would be platypus).

One of my Australian UNI professors in the US, a very good looking fellow too like this Vet, traced his lineage to a British soldier working as warden at a penal colony, King George Sound, in Australia. His ancestor apparently was sent to Australia after issues such as having a total of eight kids with eight different women back in England: seven were married to other men and one who was not. My professor got in contact with some of said ancestors back in England and has built a good friendship with them throughout the years. The latest ships of Australian criminals were mostly political prisoners or petty crime convicts as long as they knew a trade because Australia was now needing skilled laborers at the time. His ancestor arrived to Australia on 1854, thus being one of the last soldier shipments to work as prison guards, before the transportations stopped.

@BobDeGuerre

Why would they want to breed an albino animal? Isn't it a disadvantage in the wild because they can't camouflage from predators?
@itzquintle9479
@itzquintle9479 Ай бұрын
Albinism is recessive. So if Leo doesn't have an albino partner, it's a very big chance of their children being born darker coloured. Also, most times these animals are bred and kept in captivity to work towards getting their numbers up, even if not being able to release them. A lot of times these animals also turn into ambassadors for conscientization about illegal hunting and extinction in schools, to teach kids to be good to animals.
@aussie_mozzie
@aussie_mozzie 17 күн бұрын
Good question. Apparently it's a recessive gene and both parents need to have albinism to pass it out. Yeah, it might be dangerous but if I remember correctly, the spikes on their backs and their usual solidarity nature should make the possibility of danger less likely, at least when it comes to wild animals.
