So no worries of passing the albinism to the offspring? I flunked genetics 😂
@BobDeGuerre8 күн бұрын
Albinism will be passed as a recessive gene, & future offspring could be albino, if the female has an albino parent/ grandparent. Look up "Punnet Square" to learn more.
@dragonluvver9755 күн бұрын
Albinism is recessive, so if his partner isn't albino their offspring is VERY unlikely to be albino. The gene would still be present in the offspring, but it likely wouldn't effect them
@Mejlynne4 күн бұрын
Both parents have to carry the gene and pass it down at the same time for an albino to be born.
@RealFarknMcCoy2 күн бұрын
There is a worry, but they are hoping for albino offspring because they are an animal park and it would draw tourists. It would not be good for the species or the albino offspring, but they don't GAF about that.

Dumb question maybe, but male or female, why breed an albino animal? Isnt that a genetic condition that you wouldn't want to pass on
@Mejlynne4 күн бұрын
It’s only prevalent if both parents have the gene.
@christines27874 күн бұрын
@Mejlynne - awesome thank you.
@RealFarknMcCoy2 күн бұрын
It is a condition you wouldn't want to pass on - unless you're running a tourism-based animal park and want albino offspring to draw in tourists (like Symbio).
@darcieclements4880Күн бұрын
These animals have a small enough population that they're going to want to keep all of the genetic diversity and even with something like this present and there is unfortunately no getting around the fact that people find color mutants fascinating and thus having color mutants in captivity can benefit a species simply by bringing more people in to look at and learn about the species. I am not a fan of allowing albinism to proliferate for the sake of the health of the individual animals involved, but I cannot deny the educational benefits that they bring. I just asked that people who are producing these animals and sure those that take them on and that they themselves provide adequate sun protection.
@christines2787Күн бұрын
@darcieclements4880 - I am not a breeder but I do have show dogs and understand about choosing to breed less than perfect specimins. I have smooth collies. I have a beautiful girl with perfect healthy eyes. This is a rarity. However, she has a minor physical traits that people find displeasing. Its a tiny hook at the end of her tail. She has numerous obedience and rally titles but does not have a championship. I had a cousin of hers for 15 years. She was blind due to a disease called CEA. She lost her eyesight at 11 months. Her parents had an eye check grade of Go Normal. Had they wanted to, I would have let them have a litter from my rare normal eyed girl, but the crook in the tail is more important than the fact she has genetically perfect eyes. It makes no sense.

i hate to be 'that guy' ....but coudn't you have taken a DNA sample as looked for XX or XY if identifying gender it that much of a problem
@dragonluvver9755 күн бұрын
Testing for chromosomes costs a lot of money, so it's easier to just do a physical test because they already have the tools for it
@kunokoaeri35052 күн бұрын
Chromosomes aren't as good to know for a gender as looking physically. You can have male chromosomes and develop as a female...thats not rare
@RealFarknMcCoy3 күн бұрын
It's unethical and irresponsible to attempt to breed an albino echidna.
@kunokoaeri35052 күн бұрын
No. Because you need both parents to have the gene to get an albino. So, it can breed despite being an albino

It's a solid bet that Symbio are trying to breed MORE albinos, since it would be a huge tourist draw.
