My dear old (late) Dad had a Flymo version of this. He always cleaned it after using it, cleaned the spark plug etc. It rewarded him by always taking about 20 pulls to start. Our neighbour also had one and never cleaned or looked after it, it started every time much to my Dad's frustration.

It taught me a lesson that petrol mowers are there to be abused. When I had one I never cleaned it, never serviced it and it always started first time, even after four months in the shed over the winter. I once put diesel in the tank by mistake. It ran really rough and then I corrected my mistake - it worked better than ever. How my Dad would have chuckled!

In 1965 my mom brought a prototype hover mower with a regular lawn mower blade with a 3 horse power four cycle engine for me to tryout on our big lawn on a side hill what a blast I tied a ten foot rope to the handel and spin that thing in circle and the lawn was cut in no time flat. Your mowers here in the states are 500 to 1000 dollars new and 300 to 500 used. You have a very good find right threr on your workbench.

Great video Martin. Atco made some great machines in their day, specially bowling green mowers. That should be a great mower with the engine transplant. But you have to be careful you don't smash the fan underneath or it loses its hover. Cheers, Jeff.

Watch yourself with old hover mowers, I've got an 80s one and the impeller exploded, the aloy boss had corroded and split the disk. It's one of the loudest/most dangerous things happend to me. You will probably find the impeller and disc height will be different, flymo must have 100+ different disc combinations!

These older mowers are always so interesting! Can’t wait to see you swap things over and see it run! I have never gotten to use a hover mower so seeing how well they cut will be a treat. (I never knew they used string like a weed trimmer!) Don’t imagine they will cut as well as a wheeled mower, and probably struggle with tall thick grass but still really interesting to see how it does Side note: I personally have never been a huge fan of the way 2 strokes sound but that one actually sound pretty nice Take care!

Lewis, I have tried to email you but it is saying mail undelivered. Bad news i'm afraid bud. I took the van for an MOT today and it has failed on some serious structural rust around the engine mounts and suspension bud. I can't sell it to you knowing that and I won't be bothering with the repairs so i'm going to scrap it. I didn't know about these other places as the last time it was MOT'd didn't show up any issues in these areas. Hope you understand but i'm glad I tried to get it MOT'd as you would have had to deal with this and probably lost your money. Cheers Martin

Hi again Martin, you jammy devil! Ten quid for a sweet replacement engine! I would be very interested to discove what you might try to free up the original engine. You see I have an old French 2-stroke moped, an auction win, and the piston is stuck in the barrel. When I opened the crankcase I found moisture had got in and rusted the main bearing. My problem is that afterv trying penetrating oil, hard wood block and hammer, heat and even lemon juice to free off the piston, it won't budge. I don't have a high pressure grease gun so I can't try hydraulics. I would be very grateful for your advice. Thanks from an old Yorkshire "Geezer" in Ireland.
