Welcome!
Today I will be restoring an old rare broken ornate mortise lock set manufactured by Lockwood Manufacturing Co. between the mid 1880s until the 1890s. No surprise, another hardware restoration video haha. This design is (unofficially) called the Lockwood Broken Leaf - this is very fitting since it was indeed broken due to abuse. Much like in my previous mortise lock restoration videos I started this project by disassembling the mortise lock. Although the interior of this lock was filthy with years worth of old grease and other lubricants, it was obviously going to be much less of a rusty restoration in comparison to many of my previous restoration videos.
After the mortise lock was disassembled, I found a broken post inside the case which was meant to keep the lock bolt in place. Good thing I'm pretty familiar with door hardware and this isn't my first mortise lock repair! Anyways, I moved onto the paint removal stage. I had to apply two separate coats of paint stripper to remove most of the original paint. Then I gave all of the parts a thorough clean with some degreaser to remove all of the years of filth they'd accumulated. The next step of the restoration was the rust removal stage, and like usual I submerged the parts in Evapo-Rust for a few days.
While waiting for that I went ahead and searched through the 1894 Lockwood catalog, where I found the "Broken Leaf" design in multiple locations through the catalog. Once all the parts had been removed from the rust remover I went ahead and abrasive buffed all of the parts, followed by thoroughly going over them with a wire wheel, making sure to get into every nook and cranny. Then it was time for key cutting. I swear I'll be a professional locksmith if I keep all these restoration videos coming haha.
Then I had to figure out how to repair the lock case. My DIY lock repair consisted of a stainless steel bolt, threaded through the case and thoroughly sanded down to make the lock bolt fit like new. With how it's fitted it is impossible to unscrew itself, and should work for many decades of use! After the mortise lock was repaired, I moved onto sanding and polishing all of the bronze parts. Then I switched over to painting all of the large components. I painted the recessed areas of the ornate bronze parts, which is what finish #3 in the 1894 Lockwood catalog describes.
Next up I had to restore the small parts. I went ahead and did some nickel plating on a handful of parts. I sanded and polished all of the remaining brass and bronze parts. I then did cold bluing with the remaining small parts. Bluing steel is always a weirdly satisfying thing to watch IMO. The parts were all then reassembled. I installed them in a piece of wood that I drilled and chiseled out. Then I gave it a proper test, and not only is this a beautiful lock, it works great now! Of all my restorations this one is by far my favorite outcome - It's a truly gorgeous design, and along with a near perfect restoration is such a joy to look at.

The problem with such a beautiful lock is that it would need a beautiful door, in a beautiful frame, in a beautiful wall, in a beautiful room, on a beautiful floor, of a beautiful house, with a beautiful garden, in a beautiful area, with my beautiful family. I would just look at it and cry. I'd have the lock but nothing else and never will.

My uncle was a “plasterer” before modern wall board became popular. I worked for him as a labourer in a summer job in the sixties when he would be plastering walls and ceilings in large homes of those who could afford it. It was very labour intensive. He was not just a plasterer but a craftsman who would be called to restore old theatres and historical homes. I would marvel as he worked on damaged and missing art work….large ceiling rosettes, crown mouldings, flowers, angels etc…..bringing the past back to life….and all by hand. When his sons took over the company they switched to wallboard and foam castings. When my uncle died so did his craft. When I go to the theatres to see a play, I look up at the ceilings and think, “ who will look after that now?” So you are correct when you say the artists who did this have long ago passed on. Thanks for the beautiful restoration.

Thank you very much for the story/comment, I suppose that's the sad truth - It's always nice to see when a craft like that is continued by the next generation but, like you described, way more often than not that's opposite of what happens unfortunately.

My grandfather was a builder in the early 1900's and one of the homes he built was his own. My dad and my aunt grew up in it and it remained in the family until 1969. My aunt lived there most of her life and as we lived close by, we used to visit her all the time as little kids. I loved that house; she spoiled us and we had wonderful times there. It didn't have furnishings quite as elegant as that exquisite lockset (it was more Craftsman style) but there were loads of gorgeous things that I remember. Sadly, my aunt took ill in 1969 and the house and most of it's contents had to be sold to pay for her care. I think it broke my dad's heart; I know it broke mine, I was barely 18 at the time but that house held great memories. Your restorations are unbelievably beautiful and I love watching the progress you make with each one. They make me remember the house my grandad built.

Thanks always for the in-depth description with all the information. I was wondering if you could list the Dremel bits and types or even brands of paint and cleaner and lacquer you use.
