Those are beautiful Amfleet car shots! When I'd ride the Cardinal from Arlington VA to Montgomery WV to go to school at WV Tech I'd spend most of my time in the Amfleet lounge car. It rode well and accommodated the "coal" tracks of the New River CSX line much better than the heritage fleet passenger coach cars. The aerial drone videos are excellent. Just heard your drone is limited to 55 mph. That's incredible for a battery powered drone! I think the viewliner sleepers are great to have as sleepers with their advanced suspension and chassis, but they are not upper body attractive like the Amfleet coaches are. Riding the viewliner roomette on the Cardinia has fairly good reviews as far a ride quality goes which is very good for "coal" tracks. The reviewer stated riding the Cardinia was for experienced Amtrak sleeper traveller that was wanting to explore the lesser traveled routes. With that said going though the New River Gorge rivaled many of the other western mountain experiences. Its a bit hard to imagine the Cardinia once on the north east corridor travels with these same cars at about 115 mph! Watching the Cardinia go through Montgomery WV was always a bit of excitement. It also reminded me that home was at the other end of that modern train ride. It certainly made the New River gorge rail fanning seem more relevant with a modern passenger train going thought it! I never realized the Cardinia had so many elevated viaduct sections in Ohio! Though WV it is on mainline CSX tracks that were the mainline of the C&O.

Any idea why it was so late? Anyway, I’ve ridden the Cardinal many times even from when I was a kid in the 50’s and 60’s when steam was king. I dig the hell out of the way it creeps along that trestle into Cincinnati to the museum station. So cool.
@nkyrailfan2 жыл бұрын
Hey Rodney, I believe this day it was mechanical troubles with the locomotive trying to leave Chicago. I agree it is really cool to see the Cardinal creep over the trestle!

It does make sense to coordinate video catches with others so you don't have to make every opportunity. And yes, you can drive faster than 55. Just don't get caught. And no, there is no "nostalgia" in anything Amtrak. Some of us remember The Real Thing.

Great chase, thank you. Drone shots brilliant especially over the river. How far can you fly without losing control?
@nkyrailfan3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Robert, I do appreciate it. The drone is rated to fly several miles In reality, it probably goes about mile. When operating a drone you're required to keep an eye on it. I have bright flashing lights that help me see it, but at 4,000-5,000 feet, it can get tough to keep track of. So I would say a mile is about as far as I can go.

Thank you Jeff, I do appreciate it. It was initially delayed leaving Chicago due to mechanical issues. It then had issues getting through with freight trains on the tracks as well. I didn't mention it in the video but I saw several stopped CSX trains in the Greater Cincinnati area. I'm guessing CSX got tired of keeping its lines clear for it.

Good video! Amtrak is a joke. The only really dedicated Amtrak lines is The Northeast Corridor If America is to ever have on time efficient passenger service then dedicated rail passenger lines need to be built. If that would happen then rail passenger trains would be out of the way of freight traffic. I know this isn’t likely to happen but Amtrak is so often very late and passengers miss connections they need to get. I’m just saying
@nkyrailfan2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Johnathan. As someone who's ridden on the northeast corridor, I agree 100%. It needs dedicated lines if it's ever going to be competitive with driving or flying. I would certainly enjoy it much more than driving or flying within the region.
