When living and working in Kenya , I visited Zanzibar and fell in love with this paradise island and its unassuming kindly people. A few years later I had bought land and built a house on the beach. I now live and work in Oman. The 2 countries are inexorably intertwined and my own life and history is intertwined with theirs... Both the Omanis and the Zanzibaris are the kindest sweetest gentlest humblest people I’ve met. I feel sad and shocked that so much abuse of power and bloodshed happened between them. The Wikipedia page detailing the atrocities, war crimes, murders, gang rapes and genocide are horrifying and sickening . In January 1964, evil came for a vacation in paradise island .

@jan viljoen you are right, slavery ended many generations ago, on paper, but in the ground the actions said otherwise. Besides the Arabs on the Islands where some of the beneficiaries of slavery, and the minority of them controlled the Zanzibar Island and it's wealth after Independence, while the majority of Africans, our people, starved and just managed to get by. You would think after Independence they Arabs leading would bring some sort of reform, like black representation politically and perhaps wealth redistribution, but they would rather have our people starve. Us Africans have been lenient to people that oppressed us for generations within our own continent, and my only regret is that there were not more of uprising of such caliber in the continent. But the Arabs very well deserved it.

The bully bully's the kid everyday..but the day that kid drops the bully, instead of begging the bully to spare him, it shows character. And that was the Zanzibar case. Those other Arabs living there were not innocent either. I’m no fan of colonialism but this was by far the wrong way to achieve decolonisation from the Arabs, in fact it’s genocide and ethnic cleansing. The Europeans had no choice but to spread propaganda against Arabs to increase their influence and their interests (why do you think Okello ordered his men to not target Europeans?) and guess what? The Bantus unfortunately fell for it. Not many years after the revolution, attempts were made to even persuade Arabs to return to Zanzibar and assist in helping to rebuild its economy. In this case the revolution had little to do with a fight for freedom. But rather, it was incited by the Europeans through ideological propaganda, which its proponents seek to enforce a particular belief, in order to achieve greater influence and interests in that region. Truth is Asians, Africans, Arabs had and did co-exist together in peace for years before the revolution until the yt man came. I understand the playing field was unbalanced and the natives were struggling as the post-slavery era had just began however change was just beginning at that point. No one knows how Zanzibar would’ve looked like today if the genocide never occurred but I’m sure it would've been far better off.
