Brave, strong and with a zeal to help liberate other African countries that were still under the rule of the colonialists, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere the founding father of Tanzania stood as a great leader who chose the path less travelled by many.
He challenged tyrannical leaders like Idi Amin and fought tirelessly for what he believed in, socialism.

I was honored to visit his home in Butiama, sat at the chair he used to sit at his living room, and walked across his surroundings he used to walk, visited his grave, a beautiful one if that is even appropriate, visited a museum where you can see a lot of his personal belongs, super exciting to experience. He never accumulated any wealth, Nyerere died a very poor man if you compare him with his fellow freedom fighters, even his children were never privileged, they had to work to make a living . I am Christian so I don't allow my heart to worship him, that's would be a sin, but Nyerere is truly a son of Africa everyone should be proud of. Soon after he attained independence here in Tanzania he gave his all to ensure every African soil is set free. Even when life became hard he never gave up for his fellow Africans.He used to say Tanzania is not free if our fellow brothers are not free. Many countries had free access to Tanzania, a place where they can mobilize themselves when they could no longer do that in their own lands. His speeches are enough to wake you up and turn you back to humanity. He is well known as mwalimu Nyerere as he was comfortable being referred to as a teacher rather than president or former president. To let you know who this person was, the Catholic church is considering to naming him a saint , such a rare occasion for a political leader. The ultimate role model for anyone, if you want to become a better person, try to learn about this man. Nyerere made sure people lived close together for easy access to social services, pupils could walk short distances to school, my school was just 5 minutes away in my village in the 90s, a result of his smart thinking. Things were well set indeed, I remember seeing land use and plans in my village where every place was planned, a process somehow helped conserve a lot of land as of today despite a lot of destruction of the plans from our new leaders. A country with over 120 tribes, and lots of people of Asian origin, Tanzanians have managed to integrate themselves such that nobody think about another person tribe in their daily chaos, we are Tanzanians nothing more nothing less, one can own a land anywhere they want, work anywhere they get the job opportunities, and more importantly, intermarriage is extremely common, only that children will identify themselves based on their fathers side. At this point a tribe is an identity that has got no impact in someone life. This documentary is just a fraction of how amazing this man was. I would love to see his full documentary at least a movie about him. I was in form 1 secondary education when it was announced about his death, teachers had to help students calm down , even if we knew he was sick for sometime but I guess nobody was ready to imagine he would one day die, the country went silent, unsure if the country could survive without his presence, mind you we had a new president years before his death. At the end, we thank God for gifting us Nyerere to our land, that itself is more than enough.

Absolutely. The problem with our people today and the reason why there is continuous war between tribal lines is because we've blinded eyes to our past and we don't read the history of Africa. As much as we want good leadership, we cannot build a house in a weak foundation. Nevertheless, this chronic depression of our man syndrome and the imbecile of majority in our land will still punish us more and more. If only we all had one voice, put a side our poverty, put a side tribalism, put a side favoritism and think of our nation and our future together, I promise you that you can achieve eternity to our surprise. I remember Mheshimiwa Koigi warning us that, without success for struggle we will never get out of TROUBLE. If only my people can understand what their votes means and NOT the handouts from their politicians, that would be the end of poverty in our land. For sure if you stand for nothing, you will always fall for anything, Mwalimu Nyerere stood for UJAMAA and till today they buried and cemented tribalism and embrace socialism. RIP Mwalimu

Tanzania sent tons of food and medicine recently in its relief effort to help the victims of cyclone in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Most people would focus on the negatives, and claim Mwl. Nyerere with socialism failed economically wise. But he laid the peaceful moral foundations in Tanzania which led to unity of different ethnic communities in Tanzania, eradicated tribalism, religious clashes. In some communities in a country like Kenya your ethnic background seems like a priority, one would have to know whether we come from the same tribe or not. I'm Tanzanian who also lives Nairobi, Kenya. Hence I've seen the differences our nations share. Yes Kenya's economy has always been dominant compared not to just Tanzania but any other nation in East Africa. But in the end the unity Mwl. J.K.Nyerere established, has been relevant in maintaining the peace in Tanzania which exists till date. Give credit where its due, its one thing being dominant economically under socialist mechanism (in mid 60's-80's in Tanzania) and its a whole different scenario establishing unity in a country with different ethnic groups. Not so many leaders have successfully united people, most of them divide them.

I LOVE Thomas Sankara too! He was not willing to compromise his vision for his people even under French intimidation tactics. The mistake many of our other leaders made was trying to “reconcile” and play nice with the colonisers. At independence, they should have told them never to interfere in our affairs, give back our land and resources and comply with the “African way” or exit. They should have gathered our best African minds, developed an “African way” of achieving successful (from education, social empowerment to business, development and progress, public services, foreign affairs, etc) then implemented that “African way” strategy meticulously until we achieved all our objectives, autonomously.

He (GOD) doesn't make people like him.. The father of our nation and the whole continent of Africa. I went to school with one of his sons JOHN NYERERE at St. Francis Xvier in Tabora. In my generations there was no racism in Tanzania. I don't know by now I left 32 years ago. Intermarriage was common, my family has blacks, arabs, indians and whites. He considered all races as children of the nation that's why Tanzania is one of the most peaceful countries in Africa may be the world and thats why we have no blood on our flag. We don't have tribal clashes compared to most of African and Arab countries. Nyerere was a Black Christian who always wore a Zanzibarian Muslim hat, enjoying Indian food, listening classic Beethoven music and a White female American best friend Sister Jean Pruitt. He helped liberating the southern African countries from colonialism by giving refuge and full support to freedom fighters from different countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Rhodesia(Zimbabwe) Botswana, Mozambique, Angola even Palestine. He promoted Art that's why I'm a good artist!! Education for all that's why illiterate was so low even Masai, Makonde and old people learnt how to read and write through his Adult Education System he introduced in the 70's. Nyerere was a champion of human rights. He was Africa's most vocal advocate for free speech and free press. Very early in Tanzania's independence he put in measures to assure that multi-party democracy would thrive in the new nation, that dissent was never stifled, and freedom of assembly was an inalienable right of every Tanzanian. His goverment supported trade unionists, and their right to strike for better wages and work conditions for their members. His economic reforms are credited by many Economists for the rise of living standards for nearly all Tanzanians. The steady rise of Tanzanian GDP during his reign mirrored the economic miracle of West Germany. He was in a leader in establishing the Rule of Law in Africa. The Preventive Detention Act guaranteed accused of their rights under the law, and safe guarded people from arbitrary arrest and incarceration. During his presidency, his relentless fight against corruption and abuse of power made Tanzania a haven in Africa for foreign direct investment. With the Arusha Declaration, the Tanzanian economy went into overdrive. The manufacturing sector saw many innovations which were quickly immitated in Asia and the West. The export and agricultual sectors earned Tanzania the title of The Breadbasket of East Africa. The 1970's saw Tanzania's Balance of Trade double, then almost triple pre-independence.

Tanzania has about 126 tribal languages but he managed to establish Swahili as a national language, for that he will foerver be one of my top 5 African presidents(heroes). If you consider the amount of obstacles that were stacked against us, the mountain this man had to climb considering the diversity and truth be told uneducated circumstances of 1960 - 1980 Tanzania, the cold war situation and the natural wealth curse bestowed on us. What he accomplished as a leader is in itself a miracle. God bless this man.

Julius Nyerere, in my view was the first African President to honored the democratic norm that compels one to exist an occupied democratic seat once his/her tenure in office came to a legitimate end oppose to the many others like Cameroonian President Paul Biya for example, that had deliberately refused to relinquished power in compliance with the democratic norms. For that, I hold him at highest esteem coupled with his fight that ousted Idi Amin, Africa's tyrannical leader from power; a move that brought total liberation to the people of Uganda and Africa holistically. He'll forever be remembered by historians for historical contributions whilst he continue to rest in perfect peace.
