We found and brought home a super rare Chevy Corvette with a crazy retro style. This is a 435 horsepower 1968 427 big block tri-power carburetor setup, 4-speed, L89 Corvette. This car was factory black, making is 1 of under 700 ever made in that color, and even fewer 4-speed.
Stay tuned for a complete backstory on what this really is!
The L89 optioned cars had factory aluminum heads atop the 427 cubic inch big block, and 11.5 to 1 compression.
The plan is to get this car, along side my Trans Am, running ASAP. This is a true, rare barn find (at least to me).

The plates say 2015, but in WV for antique tags that would be the expiration date. Antique tags are good for 10 years, so it was tagged in 2005 last.

Dude! Incredible. If I were to find that, they'd be asking $100K. Had a '68 back in the 80's. 327. Probably shouldn't have been on the road, but I drove the poop out of it. 😂 Cool to take off the T-tops and back window. Oil pressure sender was a tube going into the gauge. Once it broke and leaked oil into the cabin. Always smelled like motor oil after that. Ah.. the good old days..

I’m excited to get it running. It’s a cool car and very 80s - I’m not sure when it was modified, but it had to be the 80s.

Nice car that brings back old memories. I had a '69 with the 390 horsepower 427 and a 4 speed tranny. Bought it in '74 during one of the gas crunches for $3,000 and kept it for 11 years. My memory is that all 427's had 4 speeds except for some weirdly tuned ones made specifically for an auto. I never saw or heard of a 427 that had a factory auto. The console plate around the shifter should have the engine specs on it. The 390 horse engine had a Rochester 4 barrel carb, and the 400 horse engine was identical except for the three deuce setup. The 425 horse and 435 horse engines had higher compression, a solid lifter cam and the horsepower difference was the same 4 barrel/ 3 deuce setup. The infamous L88 had much higher compression, a more radical solid lifter cam and a Holley carb. The solid lifter engines were not really considered to be streetable and cars equipped with them rarely had power steering, power brakes and may not have even been available with air conditioning. Even though mine was the most streetable of the 427's, it was finicky and high strung and I spent a lot of time under the hood just keeping it running right. It always got approving looks on the road and was an absolute blast to drive. Wish I still had it.

@@theinsaneshecklador6598 My comment about the transmissions was actually directed at a review of this video on Google news where the reviewer mentioned that the 4 speed in this car was a rare find. In my experience, the reverse is true. In the years I owned the car I met a lot of other Corvette owners and saw quite a few 427 powered Corvettes. I don't remember ever seeing one with an automatic transmission. I think in the years the 427's were available, the Corvette was viewed by most as an in-your-face muscle car. Most of us gearheads believed that a competent driver with a four speed could beat an identical car with a three speed automatic. This was probably true for a professional driver which we all believed we were as good as. Also, I think having a stick just seemed to fit with the Corvette and sports car aura, so most Corvettes of that era had sticks. The only automatic Corvettes I can remember seeing were base 300 horsepower 327's and 350's. The owner's manual for my 1969 model listed all the engine/ transmission options and the only 427 with an automatic was one that developed a lot of horsepower but at very low (< 4,000) RPM. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me and someone who had a 427 automatic Corvette will see this and set me straight.

I think the article was more that it being Factory black and 4-speed together was a rarer combo. There were less than 700 in black alone. But, I don’t have the numbers (yet).

@@LoganDidItYT definitely easier than removing tank. Took me like 15 minutes to get the sending unit out and can put hand and rags in tank to clean. How my 78 l48 25th anniversary edition was. Pretty sure all c3 vettes are like this. And replace rubber fuel lines also some by gas cap and fuel pump. I got some video of mine on here. Was a 350 though. Wish I could play with a tri power 427. If you need any help getting it running I'd love to help.

Pretty cool to see it in all it's 1970s upgrades glory. I'm kinda surprised they didn't upgrade to an L88 hood when they added everything else. Seems like everybody was doing that back then. 5:18 I think that may be an old school acetylene paint effect where they take a torch and let the black soot waft onto the panel before clearing it. 5:26 I know that's a long running joke but my dad who bought his 1969 L71 brand new and still has it wears New Balances. There is a lot of truth in that one.

@LoganDidItYT
@LoganDidItYT Жыл бұрын
Well, they did make L89s in 68, unless you’re confusing it with an L88. It is a 68 L89, factory 427 tri-power (435hp) with an iron block and factory aluminum heads- which is the L89 option. The L71 were iron heads, which this car does not have from the factory. The L88, would be all aluminum (block and heads) and is insanely rare. I understand why you’d be skeptical, but watch some of my other videos where I go more in depth on it.
