I saw CSX ET44AC-H #3349 Down In Ashland earlier this year on March 15th with 3 EMD GP units including a GP40-2 and a road slug, leading on a stack train with about 200 cars. CSX ET44AC-H #3411 was on the same train but serving as a DPU. I also saw CSX ET44AC-H #3311 in the same location and on the same day, but on a different train as a DPU.

Nice catch of the DPU! They say those going to become more common in the future. The days are coming when you'll see less if any helpers stationed at steep grades. I've seen a couple of trains with DPUs in the middle of a cut of cars. One was basically an engine on the head and one more halfway back in the consist. DJTrains says, " They can basically pull two trains in the same general direction." He says' " The real pain in the butt is having to cut the train out of the consist." The complaint is that there is too much jockeying of trains not just a couple of cars. The scary but fascinating part is that the train can be controlled from the head to add muscle to get over a grade and brake going down the other side. They do more with less by pulling a long train meaning they cut labor with fewer trains. It's all about the bottom line which is true just about anywhere you go.

If they were they were in those last hands full of boxcars. The caboose looked empty. if I were a guard on a train like that I'd be hanging out of a window or had the back door opened. In Europe when we went to the field on maneuvers we went with our tracks. We guided our vehicles upon flat cars. It usually consisted of me guiding our driver down a string of cars to a point in which we would tie them down with cross cables chocking the treads and finally locking everything externally inside the vehicle locked down. We traveled in a string of passenger cars of either first, second or third class status. First-class was the best with semiprivate compartments that held four people. The velvety cloth seats folded to make nice sleeping compartments for four. We always had two fire guards stationed at each end of a car to make sure no one set the car on fire or jump off the train or strangely enough jumping on the train. There was a protocol for handling that strange enough I never had to act on it. There were an awful lot of East German agents in those days who tried to collect information usually they focused on troop strength and troop morale. This was during the Carter Administration and both of those components were at all-time lows. Drug abuse was at an all-time high. Those were the years when we almost lost the Cold War.

That was awesome.. why dont they use a caboose at the end anymore.. round where I live we have one still strong in action. Pretty cool to watch it work
@MilwaukeeF40C5 жыл бұрын
Cabooses were mainly used to carry the shipping paperwork for every car, act as an away terminal bunking place, and watch for train problems from the rear end and control braking in emergencies. All of those things are not necessary anymore.

Mighty suspicious Consist there- Tankers of unknown content & shrink wrapped “lumber” carriers. Interspersed with some benign box cars and other plain looking cargo for subterfuge. Military-sounding voice on the radio. Followed up with a (presumably) armored looking caboose/Command Center. Either NATO shipment, or Chemtrail agents.
@markfryer98805 жыл бұрын
Chemtrail agents. You consiracy nut.
@MilwaukeeF40C5 жыл бұрын
The caboose is probably empty. The cars those get sent to guard are obvious ordnance carriers so the caboose probably accompanied some somewhere and is deadheading back and its crew took a plane.
