that is only for black bears. never try to show a grizzly, or even worse - a polar bear - “who’s boss”. you will be humbled very quickly

That is good advice in certain situations. Although it triggers fight/flight responses. In many cases, that may provoke an attack. I found that whistling or singing a happy song will alleviate aggressive action or fear. If one advances aggressively from that stage or bluff charges, throwing rocks is a quick deterrent, they see that as a super power and it often turns them around. If that fails be ready for a fight... NEVER run.

Species of animals know what is and is not food for them. Man is not on Black Bear's menu. Black Bears are chiefly herbivores and only occasionally eat meat. The Prescott National Forest is full of vegetation for the Black Bears to forage and prey for the bears to hunt. I seriously doubt this bear was hungry. We shouldn't assume causation; that is not known.

Who says there are scarce food sources for the bears of Arizona forests? The Black Bear have plenty of forage and prey. Do you know Arizona lands? Do you know the area of Groom Creek in the Prescott region? Black Bear are chiefly herbivores, only occasionally eating meat. The forests are chockful of food for them. Species of animals know what is and what is not food for them. You might have noticed that cats don't eat Jello, because they know it is not food for them. Man is not on the Black Bear's menu. We don't know the causation, but I *do know that behavior is absolutely not normal for Black Bear. I have personal experience with Black Bear and other wildlife that we have in Arizona, and have lived in natural areas for many years, and have been a longtime hiker and camper in the state and the west. People who live in these areas know they live among wildlife, and still, that is not normal behavior for Black Bear, who typically avoid contact with man.

Within those limits, there are common and uncommon behaviors, but anything outside of those species' limits is absolutely abnormal. There are many commenters on these pages that do *not know Black Bear, their behaviors, or what is normal for them. A wild animal is simply an animal that lives in the Wild, but that animal is part of his or her species. Living in the Wild does not make an animal a "wild card" as is known in card games. Their species' behaviors *can be and *are known. Many of us know what is and is not normal behavior for Black Bear, and there is apparently an agenda afoot to convince city dwellers that Black Bear are predatory to man when they are *NOT. The presence of trolls trying to convince us of that proves it. Since the forest is in good condition with plentiful browse and prey for the Black Bear, it is clear that he was *not hungry. There is something terribly wrong with the story or the bear.

There's ALWAYS an exception to the rule. If you live in bear country, you should have a gun on you outdoors at ALL times. Peoples own pet dogs have mauled them to death. That's not normal either. There's always an exception to the rule.

Orcas are more like Wolves than bears, because Orcas are obligate carnivores and predators that hunt in pods, similar to Wolves that hunt in packs, cooperatively. Black Bears are chiefly herbivores that only occasionally eat meat. They do not hunt cooperatively, they graze and forage mostly. Black Bears are easily frightened, do not like to be surprized, and most bad encounters that people have with them occur because the person inadvertantly surprized the bear, to which Black Bear will run away or become defensive. This is why it's important to alert bear to human presence, which longtime experienced hikers have done since at least the 1960s by wearing "bear-bells" (simple bells) hanging from one's belt-loop or pack that jingle with every movement. When Black Bear are alerted that humans are in the area, they generally head in the opposite direction, preventing contact. Bear-bells work.

Black Bear should not be confused with Grizzlies. Black Bear are much more retiring of people, preferring to stay away from people. Most negative encounters with Black Bear occur because people inadvertantly surprize them, by crossing their path unannounced, which frightens Black Bear to where they either run away or become defensive. As a result, it's very important to alert bears to human presence, as that prevents surprize, and the bear heads in the opposite direction, which prevents contact. What is represented in this video-story is absolutely not normal for Black Bear. I have had personal experience with Black Bear in my history, and with Arizona's wildlife.
