An elderly neighbor of mine, when I was a little girl, she would play this at night, It would float through my window and I would drift off to peaceful sleep. Thank you so much- it's truly a gift to me!!! 😍😍😍

THis is a transcription of the rhapsody for saxophone and orchestra. Debussy did not write the orchestral score. It was orchestrated by a friend (I don't rememeber which one). So, we hear most probably the original pinao part as written by Debussy, and the alto saxophone has benn adapted to english horn, since the two instrumants share approximately the same range.

it was transcribed for orchestra by Roger-Ducasse:D

Very nice. I love Debussy. Listen for the Cor Anglais in Maurice Ravel's - Piano Concerto in G major part II. Adagio assai. It comes in toward the later half just before coda. One of the most beautiful uses of Cor Anglais ever written in my view.

A hauntingly beautiful transcription of this piece. It occurs to me that my favorite passages in classical music feature the cor anglais: the beginning of the third movement in Vaughan Williams' fifth symphony, Ravel's piano concerto in G, the New World Symphony and others.

How excellent of Billy Stewart (my friend) to upload this music. Today I've been surveying ensemble music featuring the English horn and this is my fourth examined piece (previously Gordon Jacob's Rhapsody, Walter Piston's Fantasy and Emmanuel Chabrier's Lamento). I've always considered the oboe my favorite instrument and I can hear how similarly the English horn expresses a plaintive mood. Thank you for tracking this down, Billy!

Just within the last 15-30 years we now have at least two Concerti for English horn and orchestra: American Aaron Jay Kernis has composed "Colored Field" for English horn and Orchestra, and Latvian Peteris Vasks has also written a "Cor Anglais Concerto (1989). And I vaguely recall another American composer (?) was commissioned to write another similar work.

Oboe Files I am no classical musician, just a lover of the beauty, but my understanding for this piece is that any instrument can be played as the saxophone part is written in the original composition. If that is true, it serves to remind me why my beloved Debussy always touches my heart, his music so different but alike in a way only my soul can interpret...

I apologize for not seeing your question! Apologies. I do not play classical instruments, unfortunately; I play guitar and bass... I would assume that the music for the original composition, for alto sax, would be readily available but I don't know if that would be helpful in performing on the cor anglais. I most certainly don't know anything about sheet music as I play completely by ear... Best wishes on your search! Billy

Any idea who arranged this piece for cor anglais? I thought Debussy or his music publisher did, but I haven't been able to determine this.
@billystewart48 жыл бұрын
Apologies for the late response... From what I have seen, Durand published the piece for Piano and English Horn. I'm not certain if they were Debussy's common publisher as classical is a love of mine but I don't play, can't read music and have taken no classical classes beyond my freshman college year required "Music Appreciation". I wish I could play such marvelous works or read the pieces but, alas, my parents couldn't afford lessons for me and when I taught myself to play, it was by ear and on the Bass and Acoustic Guitar...
@andrewlewis51077 жыл бұрын
In the sheet music there is no arranger credited. It looks to me like there was not much arrangement to speak of needed to adapt this for cor anglais. The piano score has the saxophone part written in concert pitch and looks identical to the piano score of Durand's edition of the original version for piano and saxophone. The cor anglais part simply looks like the original saxophone solo part transposed for an F instrument. It is in the original key, and I haven't checked every single note but it doesn't even look like any notes needed to be taken up an octave.

What a pity that there is so little music composed for the English horn that reflects its unique character and qualities. The Romantics really missed the boat when it came to scores for the oboe and EH, and much of the modern music is simply far less appealing.
