Here in Germany its not just frowned upon, its forbidden by Law to breed Blue or fawn/isabell Dobermänner. Which is awesome, they are already a Sick Breed overall and really dont need another gendefect in their history of hereditary sicknesses :) Docking is also illegal, which i personally find absolutely awesome. It looks awesome, but if you dont seriously work your Dog or its not a medical thing, there is no need for it. Cripple a Dog for Aesthetics, should never be an option. @@bscanlon97 well, yes but also no. Ears, well…not really but it makes no sense, you cut a piece of your Dog off, for no other purposethan your own agenda, it dosent really affects the Dog, but still - there is always a risk to it which is not necessary . So here yes - a little Dramatic (but still :D). But Tail Docking yes. As you know, Dogs communicate with Body Language and their Tail is hughe indicator/part of communication for them (there may be Breeds without Tails naturally,but that was also man made over Time with selective Breeding and should not have happend :) ), by docking the Tail, you also take away a Part of their way to communicate, so in my line of thinking - you dock tail, which is a big part of their way of their way of communication that is now limited because of aesthetics. That to me is crippled. I hope you understand what i‘m trying to say, English is not my first language :)

@HEMI-MOMMA
@HEMI-MOMMA 10 ай бұрын
Not allergies. It's a condition called color dilution alopecia. The hair actually breaks off. Owners get suckered into believing expensive allergy treatments will alleviate the condition. My Doberman comes from a breeder with quite a bit dilution in her breeding lines. Luckily, their genetics are so good they don't have a lot of breakage. She's finished several fawn and blue Champions over the years that still had thick coats well into their senior years which is not the norm. When we were breeding, we genetic tested for color while getting all of their health certifications so that we'd only get blacks and reds.

The RSPCA does not agree. Besides the fact that even if it DOESN'T hurt, you are sedating your dog (or not) and putting them through a surgical procedure with increased risks of medical complications (and future potential behavior complications) and for what? Your personal preference on how the dog looks? That's unacceptable. This isn't an object for you to modify as you see fit. It's a living animal. If there was a medical reason, I'd understand. Why does it matter. It’s the breed standards. Official Standard of the Doberman Pinscher General Appearance: The appearance is that of a dog of medium size, with a body that is square. Compactly built, muscular and powerful, for great endurance and speed. Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament. Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient. Size, Proportion, Substance: Height at the withers: Dogs 26 to 28 inches, ideal about 271⁄2 inches; Bitches 24 to 26 inches, ideal about 251⁄2 inches. The height, measured vertically from the ground to the highest point of the withers, equaling the length measured horizontally from the forechest to the rear projection of the upper thigh. Length of head, neck and legs in proportion to length and depth of body. Head: Long and dry, resembling a blunt wedge in both frontal and profile views. When seen from the front, the head widens gradually toward the base of the ears in a practically unbroken line. Eyes almond shaped, moderately deep set, with vigorous, energetic expression. Iris, of uniform color, ranging from medium to darkest brown in black dogs; in reds, blues, and fawns the color of the iris blends with that of the markings, the darkest shade being preferable in every case. Ears normally cropped and carried erect. The upper attachment of the ear, when held erect, is on a level with the top of the skull. Top of skull flat, turning with slight stop to bridge of muzzle, with muzzle line extending parallel to top line of skull. Cheeks flat and muscular. Nose solid black on black dogs, dark brown on red ones, dark gray on blue ones, dark tan on fawns. Lips lying close to jaws. Jaws full and powerful, well filled under the eyes. Teeth strongly developed and white. Lower incisors upright and touching inside of upper incisors a true scissors bite. 42 correctly placed teeth, 22 in the lower, 20 in the upper jaw. Distemper teeth shall not be penalized. Disqualifying Fault - Overshot more than 3/16 of an inch. Undershot more than 1⁄8 of an inch. Four or more missing teeth. Neck, Topline, Body: Neck proudly carried, well muscled and dry. Well arched, with nape of neck widening gradually toward body. Length of neck proportioned to body and head. Withers pronounced and forming the highest point of the body. Back short, firm, of sufficient width, and muscular at the loins, extending in a straight line from withers to the slightly rounded croup. Chest broad with forechest well defined. Ribs well sprung from the spine, but flattened in lower end to permit elbow clearance. Brisket reaching deep to the elbow. Belly well tucked up, extending in a curved line from the brisket. Loins wide and muscled. Hips broad and in proportion to body, breadth of hips being approximately equal to breadth of body at rib cage and shoulders. Tail docked at approximately second joint, appears to be a continuation of the spine, and is carried only slightly above the horizontal when the dog is alert. Forequarters: Shoulder Blade-sloping forward and downward at a 45-degree angle to the ground meets the upper arm at an angle of 90 degrees. Length of shoulder blade and upper arm are equal. Height from elbow to withers approximately equals height from ground to elbow. Legs seen from front and side, perfectly straight and parallel to each other from elbow to pastern; muscled and sinewy, with heavy bone. In normal pose and when gaiting, the elbows lie close to the brisket. Pasterns firm and almost perpendicular to the ground. Dewclaws may be removed. Feet well arched, compact, and catlike, turning neither in nor out. Hindquarters: The angulation of the hindquarters balances that of the forequarters. Hip bone falls away from spinal column at an angle of about 30 degrees, producing a slightly rounded, well filled-out croup. Upper shanks at right angles to the hip bones, are long, wide, and well Page 1 of 2 Page 2 of 2 muscled on both sides of thigh, with clearly defined stifles. Upper and lower shanks are of equal length. While the dog is at rest, hock to heel is perpendicular to the ground. Viewed from the rear, the legs are straight, parallel to each other, and wide enough apart to fit in with a properly built body. Dewclaws, if any, are generally removed. Cat feet as on front legs, turning neither in nor out. Coat: Smooth-haired, short, hard, thick and close lying. Invisible gray undercoat on neck permissible. Color and Markings: Allowed Colors-Black, red, blue, and fawn (Isabella). Markings-Rust, sharply defined, appearing above each eye and on muzzle, throat and forechest, on all legs and feet, and below tail. White patch on chest, not exceeding 1⁄2 square inch, permissible. Disqualifying Fault - Dogs not of an allowed color. Gait: Free, balanced, and vigorous, with good reach in the forequarters and good driving power in the hindquarters. When trotting, there is strong rear-action drive. Each rear leg moves in line with the foreleg on the same side. Rear and front legs are thrown neither in nor out. Back remains strong and firm. When moving at a fast trot, a properly built dog will single-track. Temperament: Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient. The judge shall dismiss from the ring any shy or vicious Doberman. I have never seen so many babies in the comment section. This is a Doberman and this is how they were breed to look originally from the original breeder. It's tradition and keeping the breed how it is designed to look. If you dont like it keep it to yourself and keep moving. Also I adopted a dobie that has cropped ears that do not stand, someone did not want him because of this. I also have a fawn one with ears cropped and standing. Here in the U.S most people do not want a doberman with floppy ears. It is what it is and you will not change this by crying in the comment section.

It's a shame that there's so many idiots in this comment section that are completely ignorant to this beautiful breed's history. Dobermans were the first and so far only breed created specifically to be personal protection dogs. That is why their breed standard calls for them to be cropped and docked, so that attackers can't grab and pull on their ears or tails. Plus, with thin ears, Dobermans with uncropped ears are far more prone to hematomas and split ears. If you don't like breeds that are cropped and/or docked, don't get them, but you shouldn't erase these breeds' histories just because it hurts your poor little feelings.
@Vanessa-es2ss

It's a shame that there are so many idiots in this comment section that are defending mutilation and animal cruelty in the name of aesthetics and breed history. The Dobermann's origin is Germany and the standard there clearly says the ears and tail should be kept naturally. Cropped and docked dogs are also not allowed in shows and competitions. Even working Dobermanns are not cropped/docked in Germany and doing just fine. If you do some research (e.g. check the website of the AVMA who also opposes these procedures): the danger of getting the tail or ears damaged during an attack or while working is almost nil. Still thousands of dogs get mutilated. Just because something was done with good intentions (preventing the dog from getting hurt during an attack) a long time back, does not mean it still is reasonable today. People learn. Veterinarians in more and more countries are calling for the ban. In North America not only the AVMA, but also the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association. Vets who actually would make money with those procedures are saying "no thank you" because it is recognised as animal cruelty and can have lots of side effects. All vets must be utterly stupid according to some people in this comment section. And also what nonsense is this: "I don't want the dog to get hurt during an attack, so better to hurt it beforehand and cut of his tail and ears". Err what???
@2devious724
@2devious724 Жыл бұрын
@@Vanessa-es2ss you’ve clearly done zero proper research on this breed. The creator of the breed, Louis Doberman, had this breed cropped since the beginning. Germany didn’t outlaw cropping and docking until 1992, after animal rights activists started dictating European laws. Plus, properly done crops and docks don’t hurt dogs at all. Docking is done when they’re newborns and their tails have no nerves so they don’t even feel it, and with cropping they get medication so they don’t feel pain. And even if the individual Dobermans aren’t working dogs, I’ve seen dozens of cases of them having split ears, hematomas, and happy tail due to their thin ears and bony tails. To claim that cropping and docking has no health benefits to this breed is completely naive. And by the way, do you have any problems with spaying and neutering? Because that is way more invasive and painful than cropping and docking.
@Vanessa-es2ss
@Vanessa-es2ss Жыл бұрын
@@2devious724 His name was Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann (yes "double n" and actually Tobermann) and I never said that the breed never got cropped or docked. It was done but is now outdated. And yes, the cropping and docking is indeed removed from the german standard of the breed. So you better do your research. Just because it is still mentioned in your country's standard does not mean it is the same for Germany. Cropping is prohibited since 1987 and docking since 1998. Cropped/docked dobermans are not allowed to be presented at shows or competitions as they are not representing the german standard of the breed. Many of your mentioned health benefits got busted by vets. It is only a very tiny fraction of dogs that actually benefit from it and they are mostly not dobermans but hunting dogs. And there are health risks and long-term effects in many docked/cropped dogs. Look it up. Why do you actually think, that so many countries (not only in Europe) but around the world are prohibiting this practice and it is mostly vets who oppose this? Like I said the vets must be all so super stupid and the Protection of Animals Act is an absolute joke of course. Oh and spaying/neutering is mostly done by animal welfare groups here. There are restrictions for private dog owners and a vet can deny that procedure without proper indication. My dog is not neutered.
@2devious724
@2devious724 Жыл бұрын
@@Vanessa-es2ss You're argument that it's illegal in parts of Europe for good reasons without actually citing those reasons is extremely weak. European countries will ban all kinds of canine safety tools for no good reason, like crates and e-collars. Also what "long term negative effects" are there to professionally-done cropping and docking? I've found none. And you did concede that docking was for the safety of hunting dogs, which it is, but it's also for the safety of certain herding and guardian breeds. Plus, you say "so many vets" are against this, whereas I've seen tons of other vets saying that they were much more likely to see split ears and hematomas in uncropped Dobermans, Great Danes, Boxers, etc. as opposed to their cropped counterparts. Can you make any actual health-related argument against the procedures besides calling them""mutilation"" when they don't even remotely fit the definition of mutilation?

Who the hell called that fawn? The correct term is isabella as fawn is a light tan golden color. For those that don't know to get the isabella gene you need to have the dilution gene on (changes coat from black to blue/gray) along with the chocolate/liver gene. The fawn coat comes from a different gene set over all, but people mislabel 'rare' coats to get more attention.

When I saw the original doberman breed picture from 1880, it’s ears are naturally cropped, but otto goeller mixed and refined the now doberman that’s why It’s ears are now floppy. It is said to be mixed with beauceron, german pinscher, rottweiler, german shepherd, greyhound and manchester terrier. But the original first bred of doberman with natural short pointed cropped ears is by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann from Germany. The cropping of the ear of the now version of Doberman is supposedly for following the real version of Doberman, and I believe for case by case reason. I’M NOT SAYING IT’S RIGHT TO HURT THE DOG FOR AESTHETIC REASONS what I’m pointing out is that “ORIGINALLY” and “NATURALLY” the first bred Doberman have pointed ears.

Why are we still docking ears and tails for non-working reason? I absolutely hate it. These are animals, not objects. You don't just get to surgically modify them to be "prettier". They can't consent to that.
@tabbytabs_xx
@tabbytabs_xx 7 ай бұрын
If the ears are caught or torn or pulled hard enough, they are likely to bleed very heavily and really hurt. The amount of blood alone could be a danger, but usually the wounds to an ear are not fatal. The vet would need to repair them in surgery and give antibiotics to prevent infection. They are likely to scar and the healing may result in unsightly abnormality of shape. It could cost a lot to repair if the damage was serious enough. this is the exact reason why tails are docked as well. The Doberman tail is particularly thinner and susceptible to painful breaking or damage just from every day wear/use. Docking the tail prevents later on serious injury or damage.
