Rare footage, the only time a class 33 to Inverness (lockdown video No 9)

When the class 33 were finishing I went all over the country filming them, in this video you will see the class at Coventry, Birmingham International and in many locations in Scotland on the main line to Inverness.
The tour to Inverness was the first time the class had been over the border into Scotland, and the last tour by Special Trains (formerly the InterCity Charter) which became Waterman Railways. The train did arrive at its destination 35 minutes early.

The class 33s were very similar to the Scottish 26 and 27s so Scottish drivers were familiar with them . Cromptons were a great loco , powerful and always reliable . Bless em .

Never get bored viewing yesteryear. Great footage I must say. Last time we went there was on an InterCity 4 day land cruise. Arrived at 4.30 am and was on the platform filming..

I possibly worked a TC as a guard with 33116. Although it was Eastleigh based at the time it did still do the occasional push-pulls to Weymouth from Bomo.

Great video again Mike! I didn't know that 33's ever got to Inverness. We had a 33 at a Diesel Gala at Bo'ness a few years ago, I was never familiar with them as they weren't Scottish locomotives. I travelled on the push pull, top and tailed 27's on the Edinburgh to Glasgow many years ago. I was on the railtour to Inverness with 37025 a few years ago too, that was brilliant, we had the Railway to ourselves as there was a strike on at the time, it was a memorable run!

Hi Alistair good to hear from you again. So that was news to you that the 33s went to Inverness, well keep a look out as before Christmas I will upload some other rare railtour footage in Scotland. Yeah I travelled on them class 27 TnT services, and was disappointed when they made way for the 47/7 to take over, but looking back now I would be very happy if any sort of loco was on that service. Great to see this, thanks for posting it!. I remember this well. I went to see it passing Cradlehall and then set off to get some photos at Tomatin or Slochd, just to see it alongside going over the Tomatin viaduct. That tour made a great run up the hill, much quicker than others I'd seen earlier with a Class 40 etc.

Well In them days Ian I had a new car every nine months, yes I remember going to Haymarket depot a few times in the last 70s and seeing loads of locos, such brilliant days.

I grew up in Coventry, and in the late 70's/early 80's I am sure I recall an evening train fro Paddington used to switch to an electric at Coventry, and on a few occasions it would arrive behind a 33. Not a regular sight in those days. Meanwhile I hope you have a lot of videos as this lockdown looks set to go on for a rather long time.....
