You are right about him being a pillar which Hip Hop stands on. Fortunately this is well-documented One correction: Grandmaster Flash not only an INNOVATOR & CREATOR, but was actually the BEST DJ in HIP HOP for several years. Before "turntablism" was started, he was quick cutting, echo scratching, fast-cueing, etc. before most these DJ's were born. GMF was famous destroying comp in 70's. In the early 80's Philly masters like Jazzy Jeff, Ca$h Money & Miz ruled then it spread worldwide.

The Place: South Bronx. The Year(s) 1974 - 1979. Hip Hop was new, fun and spreading like a wild fire throughout the Bronx. There were also others just as good as Flash and The Furious 4 (if not better) that some never heard of because they put their mic down by 1979. Crews like The Imperial D.J. Jay Cee and his Fabulous 4 MC's (Eddie Ed, Sony.B, Little D and Zack Zack) who were the top dogs in the highbridge section of the Bronx before Jay Cee joined Kool Herc.

Oh the days when hip hop was hip hop. Flash was my idol and I can remember the first time I seen him at the Stardust Ballroom in the boogie down bronx. He showed up in blue and red tights and a cape, I thought this guy must be on some serious shit and he was, he started off with (I cant stop) and and ended with (Supersperm) I was hooked after that. God Bless GM Flash!!!

Please pass on big props to Herc from the Zulu Nation Chapter ATL. My understanding is Herc was the pioneer who brought people together with live DJ selecting as was done in his home of Jamaica with ska-rocksteady-reggae tunes. Flash continued the breakbeats back to back. For info about the masters of DJing, check the film SCRATCH.

Hip Hop goes way back than 79' dude! Kool Herc created this in Jamaica back in the mid 1960s by creating Reaggae breakbeats. When he came to America in the 70s, he began making Funk and Disco breakbeats.
