Great year for Lionel trains as well. Hope you have aged as well as that layout and glad you enjoyed the video. Appreciate the comment and keep enjoying those trains. Brian

This is fabulous. I never knew Lionel made these merchandising displays. Great that some have survived as a testimonial to how well build Lionel products were. decades later they still operate perfectly.

Thanks for these great videos! The rare dealer layouts are something that many of us might never get to see in action if it were not for you. As a longtime postwar collector, I really appreciate it!

It is my pleasure to get these out there, had a super fun time filming this layout! There are so few of these and the fact they take up a ton of space, few collectors have one in their collection. So, getting to see one in person is a treat! If you get to go the the TCA National convention this June, the layout tour has a few original dealer layout on them!. Love this stuff!! Brian

Brian that D224 display layout's like a fine wine, it's just gotten better with age. Thanks for "Popping the cork" with us!

For sure, can only image how cool it would have been to be a kid back in the late 50's seeing these in the store and then picking up what you wanted! Awesome!. Hope this sparks some cool memories. Thanks for the note and support! Brian

A great looking and surviving display layout. Thank you for sharing, Brian. Lionel's team were definitely creative with their displays, a lot of action in a small space. I've never seen one up close, so these videos really interesting to see in action.

Love the original displays, they are so much fun to film and play with. Tons of action in a small space and a postwar Gem for sure!. If you are a TCA member and going to the convention in Lancaster Pa, there are some original dealer displays on the Layout tour not to be missed! Thanks Brian

So nice to see you at York. Looked like high grade pre-war coming out of the woodwork. I did manage to find a couple of Super “O” deals. Not to mention some scandalous prices on some ordinary things, but there were bargains to be had.

I am impressed how clean that display is for its age. I enjoyed watching it and wish I had the space and money for something like that. Can you please do a video on the different types of smoke pellet containers, how you can date them, and the more rare examples. I enjoyed your video on the dealer boxes of smoke pellets and I need more. I am definitely subscribed.

Glad you like the videos and love the suggestion. I will put that on my list. I do have an episode coming up that talks about the pellets and shows a rare dealer box! Keep an eye out. I also love the old displays and there are some really nice examples out there!. Thanks, Brian

This is a joy to watch. I notice that the third rail is a different style than mine. My third rail is just a regular rail placed between the tracks. I wonder why this is.
@BriansTrainRoom4 ай бұрын
So, the layout is using Super "O" track which was introduced in 1957 and replace traditional "O" gauge track you normally see. It was more detailed with wood look ties and a thinner center rail. Was available until mid-60's. Some of the best displays Lionel made were super "O". Glad you enjoyed the episode. Another episode shows a D165 from 1956 and it runs traditional "O" gauge track on that display. Brian

Really fun one to film, goal is to show all the parts of the layout with all the action. Image seeing this layout at your local train store back in the late 50's and then wanting all the accessories and trains seen running. Powerful sales tool for sure!. Thanks. Brian

Hi Brian, great video of Russ McNair’s 1958 dealer display. Question: Does the flagman in the gate house have a flag in his hand? The one on my layout does, so i was wondering if Russ’s is a different model? Great series that you are doing and Russ’s train room is the best that I have even seen. Both of you guys keep up the outstanding efforts.
@BriansTrainRoom8 ай бұрын
Hi, Yeah the gateman should have a flag, the one on his layout seems to have a broken flag! Nice pickup and I am sure he will work to get that fixed. Otherwise the Gateman is just watching trains and not doing his job!!. He has been a huge help with great content. Brian

I'd like to see Lionel make a run of super O.. but add 072 curves And 27 or 36 straight sections..
@BriansTrainRoom7 ай бұрын
I believe Lionel explored that idea back in the 70's, but it was going to be too costly. If they were to make it today, might work, but still a very limited market. Would love some 72 inch radius Super O myself! Brian

They using 3/8" or 1/2" plywood?
@BriansTrainRoom8 ай бұрын
I think it is 1/2 plywood, remember, that even plywood was better back then!!! Solid construction for the use it was going to get. This was a commercial display to show off that years trains and accessories. Thanks, Brian

Lionel your video. I have a open question. Did Lionel ever sell the displays to the public. Now I don't mean after Christmas but could you go to a dealer and order one? That's my question. Thanks love the videos.
@BriansTrainRoom5 ай бұрын
That is a great question. I will ask around and see if anyone can definitively answer that question!. I image you could, the display layouts were listed in the dealer catalog and if the buyer was friends with the dealer, they could order one one from the dealer. Direct sales to customers was not typical practice. Even most trains stores utilized clearing houses and distributers and they didn't always buy directly from Lionel. Love the question, Good one1. Thanks. Brian

Looks like it may have been rebuilt with atlas track
@BriansTrainRoom8 ай бұрын
While you could remake this layout with modern track, this layout uses Vintage Super "O" track. Modern Atlas track does have a similar look to provide some realism. That is why super "O" track was ahead of it's time back in the late 50's. Thanks. Brian

So True, these layouts were not cheap, but they sold tons of product and you could sell it at the end of the season, or part it out. Wish more had survived over the years. B
