😎 I've conditioned my body for holding my breath as long as possible, so that I can start a new hobby of "deep sea snorkeling". ^This is typical of the depth that I dive to, so I run into a LOT of these deep water sharks while snorkeling. I even spotted one at the comparably shallow depth of 1,900 feet last weekend, on my way down to 4,400 feet. 😁👍

We did about a dozen dives for this project and on nearly all the deep dives we saw one or sometimes several of these 6-gill sharks (Hexanchus griseus). So there appears to be a community or small population of them to be thriving off the northeast coast of Molokai. But the one in this clip was by far the largest one was have seen. I always thought if a truly large individual over 15ft was found, it would be around the Hawaiian islands. Lol I have an interest in all sharks but mostly do most of my research on GWs. Big Blue (well known GW) was spotted off the coast of Hawaii, on her migration from Guadalupe Island, Mexico and shes about 21.5 ft. Pacific Sleeper Sharks may be out in the island areas as well, but very few sightings so far, they live at around the same depth and deeper than the 6th Gill and Prickly sharks hang out. They did spot a 23ft female Sleeper off Oahu at 6300ft.

IT IS A SIX GILL SHARK, Catch one like I have before and you will know. The bluntnose sixgill shark resembles many of the fossil sharks from the Triassic period. This could be because there are a greater number of Hexicanus relatives in the fossil record than there are left alive today. They have one dorsal fin located near the caudal fin. The pectoral fins are broad, with rounded edges. There are six gill slits, which gives the shark its name. Most common sharks today only have five gill slits. The living species that are closest genetically include the dogfish, the Greenland shark, as well as other six- and sevengilled sharks.
