Watch how the rare Tilting Target Signal works at an unusual railroad diamond on CSX and the Madison Railroad in Indiana! Old School Railroading! This railway diamond is unusual because the CSX rails on the diamond do not have flange cuts! We see the old fashioned target signal in use and we see the wheels of the Madison Railroad train roll over the rails of the CSX diamond. Most diamonds have flange ways cut into them but not this one at least not through the CSX rails. This puts less wear on the diamond. The CSX freights can fly over the diamond as if it weren't there while trains on Madison Railroad roll slowly over the diamond. I tried to explain it but just watch the video. This diamond is called an OWLS diamond or One Way Low Speed diamond. First we see the train at a rural crossing north of Madison. Then we see the North Vernon, Indiana diamond. Next we see the tilting target being used to allow the short train to cross over the CSX mainline. The Tilting Target Signal was replaced by CSX with new signals shortly after this was filmed. The train crosses over the diamond and then reverses through town so that they can cross the diamond again, this time on the CSX line. The train is taking 2 cars from the Jefferson Proving Ground to the 6 track CSX yard in North Vernon. I stuck around long enough to see the locomotive return light on its way to switch a customer on the north end of town. I have more videos of the Madison Railroad and the Jefferson Proving Ground which the railroad uses to store railroad cars for their owners when they are not needed. I also have a video of a similar Tilting Target Signal being used in Washington Court House, Ohio on the Indiana & Ohio Railway: • Rare Tilting Target Si... If you like short line railroads and railroad switching you are at the right place. Check my playlists. Filmed January 22, 2021. This is one of my first videos that I have filmed in 4K so make sure you have the video set to watch in 4K. It's a little shaky until I get use to using the 4K camera settings. A couple of years after I filmed this CSX replaced these signals with new ones.
The video also shows the GE B36-7 locomotives that Cincinnati Eastern Railroad used until a couple years ago. The locomotives are sadly out of service and stored in Sardinia, Ohio. Doubtful that they will ever run again so I am glad that I recorded history. They originally came from TTI Railroad out of Paris, Kentucky. TTI is owned by CSX. TTI lost all of their coal and rock contracts and most of their track is out of service and washed out. It will never run again.
A few years ago I posted the Madison Railroad scenes but the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad scenes have never been posted in my long videos.
