We were able to travel to Russia last summer and film all of this over a two week period. For obvious reasons that trip was probably a once in a lifetime trip. We will continue to release segments from that trip. Let me know if you guys have any questions.

I must say, the AN-94 is not exactly a battlefield worthy weapon because of the intricate parts, but what a mighty fine weapon. The AEK-971 however is the perfect sportsman/hunting rifle. And I would dare to say perfect for the battlefield in various barrel lengths so long as parts are readily available for replacements on broken parts.

Not just gun designers. The modern west has only just figured out the LED to the point of mass-manufacture, yet a russian inventor came up with the first LED in the world all the way back in 1927! Ironically, imo if this was invented in USA, there would be a much higher chance of more money being put into the LED project, and maybe the world would see LED lights some decades earlier.

@@mariuscatalin5982 Success in terms of power, but in terms of human moral and scientific advancement those things keep us back, but it's a pretty complex topic, the thing I mentioned was more hinting that capitalism in cases of things that are deemed "not impressive/useful" by the governmental body can still be progressed because of people's personal interest, aka there's a market for it, but at the same time all these inventions coming out of USSR were invented because of the money & power invested in education over there probably, so it's a double-edged sword which side of the spectrum you take, which is why in the middle sounds more rational tbh.

That AN-94 was my heater in Bad Company 2 when I was playing that game. I sucked at the game so putting two rounds on top of one another was helpful. I used a 4X optic. Loved that thing in that game.

The first game (that I know) which used AN-94 was Stalker (from 2006, I think?). It pissed me off that devs apparently didn't even care what was the gun about. In that game its 2-round burst was firing with the same tempo as full auto. Oh well.

Even if the AN-94 doesn't get two rounds through the same hole, the whole point of the hyper-burst function was to increase hit probability. It stands to reason that 2 rounds are going to increase your chances of hitting a target.

It's a real shame that there aren't more young people involved in firearms engineering these days. Those of us that are interested in this field have limited resources for learning and mainly have to rely on self-education. I hope that by the time I'm 40 or 45 I will have enough knowledge, experience, and machine tools to make my own creations.

4:07 Larry got it wrong about the An 94, to put it simple. This gun does not shoot two bullets before the recoil is felt, because of a counterweight, but because the barrel with all the moving parts together travels backwards inside the frame. And in the short time frame before the whole package reaches the end of the gun and the recoil is felt, two shots are already out of the muzzle and cant get influenced by the rising muzzle any more. You can tell, that this is an accurate description, because the gun is not recoil free, which it would be with a counterweight. There is indeed a recoil, but felt after two shots. Pretty much the same principle like in the G 11. The forward moving part is not a counterweight but simply there to feed the second round. You cant do that simply with the bolt, like in all other assault rifles, since the position of the magazine is fix and the other parts are travelling backwards inside the frame. So the position of the cartridge relative to the chamber is different for each of the two shots, since the chamber still moves backwards after the first reload. And the "elevator", that transports the rounds from the magazine towards the moving bolt/chamber group is what Larry mistook for the counterweight.

AN-94 won the competition against the AEK-971 in all categories, reliability, accuracy, function, precision, and ease of use. The AN-94 is easy to maintain with a bit of training and needs only a single key found in the buttstock to take it apart and put back together, just as easy as the AK. The AEK-971 is a wonderful gun and the AK-12 is basically an AEK-971 with modularity. But the only reason the AN-94 isn't the main Russian battle rifle is due to cost of manufacture, they could easily afford it now but that ship has unfortunately sailed :/

Alexander Lerke They just announced they're going to use a mixture of both; the AK-12 is a tad less accurate, and the AEK is a bit slower to make/a tad more expensive. Probably about a 50/50 split?

The thing that people get wrong here: You feel one recoil but that recoil will contain the energy of both shots minus a bit maybe. The trick is to delay the first recoil until the second round has left the barrel.

Amazing video, tons of thanks! One thing though: Vick, you referred to AN-94 "Abakan" as an extremely rare gun; however, as far as I know, it is not that rare -- it's currently in production and was adopted by Russian military, mainly for spec-ops units, and by MVD (Ministry of Internal Affairs) for SWAT-like and other special units. Of course, it's not as numerous as AK, but I wouldn't classify it as an extremely rare gun... Interestingly enough, it may become rare relatively soon due to the fact that there are some doubts regarding its future.

Kinda unfortunate that the Russian army never adopted the AEK-971, but I can see why. A. It was probably rather expensive due to the extra mechanism that had to be installed into the gun, making it slightly more difficult to field strip as well. And B., In an assault rifle platform, rate of fire is kind of negligible. It takes one bullet to incapacitate a target, and a high rate of fire, no matter how controllable the gun is, chews through ammo. 650 rpm in an AK-74 or AK-100 series rifle is perfect.

1800rpm... Half the speed of your average minigun.. Fucking hell. When the gun was being developed the issue was cost. Sure Russia could afford it now, especially since it outclasses the AEK-545 even in the RPM department, that opportunity flew off and the AK-12 is the new main rifle. AN-94 was perfect ; accurate, two fire modes, one which is a guaranteed two shot even on a moving target due to RPM, and a mediocre 600RPM full auto. Clean iron-sights, moderately lightweight, optimized for modern gear such as optics, stock, receiver and foregrips (skeleton frame etc). This looks like it could've replaced the AKM and the AK74.

Fires.. First shot .. Second before bolt carrier gr8.. HOW?! Who designed that ? Rick Sanchez from Rick & Morty in some parallel universe????? I literally dont get how its cycling so fast after the first shot that it puts the 2nd in battery and fires before ots finished with the initial cycle on the bcg??? (Fuck I'm confused. I know I butchered it!) wtf this was OBVIOUSLY made especially for Imperial Assassins by Adeptus Mechanicus in the dark war stricken universe of the 41st millennium and it was STOLEN by Rick with the help of the portal gun and sold to Russia for booze and poon.
