For an old SD40-2, she was movin right along! Can't beat those 645E3 prime movers. Robust and versatile things, they are. I love seeing a freight locomotive hauling revenue passenger service. "I can only haul freight? Hold my box cars and watch this". Fantastic catch!

The SD40-2 is simply the best! All the GE Dash 7 (with the same age than the SD40-2), and GE Dash 8 were retired, sold or scrapped, while the SD40-2 still alive on the battlefield. You can be sure that when the Dash 9/AC4400CW be retired, some SD40-2 will still in service.

I don't think the city of Flagstaff lent Amtrak anything ... BNSF owns the locomotive, not the government. Also remember that while a locomotive might be used for local/yard switching for a while at a certain location, it will get rotated out and replaced with another one for maintenance etc.

These railroad signal crossings, Norwalk ,Pioneer, and Los Nietos, now have the bell/gong circuit connected to the lamp flashing circuit. SCAX & PUC ordered this change. Other BNSF x-ing signals in most other areas have the bell/gong circuit controlled by the master/GCP controller relay, which means bell shuts off when gates rise. This is still the current standard work installation procedure.

Nothing to do with the locomotives, Amtrak is just shitty at keeping their trains and crew working. You can find video and photo of almost every railroad rescuing Amtrak trains, be it Chessie GP30s, Southern Pacific Tunnel Motors, Santa Fe SD40-2s, Union Pacific SD60s, Even CSX has rescued Amtrak a few times. And it seems every news story about some major train derailment or collision, is at the fault of or somewhat to blame of Amtrak.

+phillyslasher you need to get off the California weed bro. Emd engines are 20 time's more reliable then ge engines and for your information the only time emd made a shit engine was the sd45, sdp45 and sd50. Sd50's are now sd50-2 for csx and norfolk southern sd50 are sd40e basically are internals of a sd40-2 now the sd60 and sd70 that goes for the m, m2 mac and ace they proven to be more reliable then any emd 645 20cyl engine out there, of course they don't make them anymore do to emd 710 prime movers are proven success. stop putting shit out there that's false because the biggest piece of shit on the rails are GE engines.

Pretty rare to see a freight train here in South Orange County with full hoppers cars. Normally we only get certain freight trains like autoracks and daygos, because more people here prefer shipping it on trucks instead of trains. So seeing a freight train with full hoppers are pretty darn rare.
@iaev2500a33 жыл бұрын
Actually no. Before 2000, south OC got lots of freights cause the port was open and there were also less scheduled surfliner, Metrolink, and coaster trains back then. After 2000, passenger service ramped up and the port in San Diego closed therefor killing off the many intermodal and other freights

Whether a locomotive is an EMD or GE does not matter. Poor maintenance or the lack of routine maintenance contribute to failures of different types. With our dumb politicians in Washington cutting Amtrak's budget more and more every year, there will be more failures. Amtrak has old equipment. They need new equipment, but again, Washington cuts the budget so new equipment cannot be purchased. If Amtrak is ever privatized, or at the very least removed from government funding and funded other ways, things might change for the better.

Old equipment? The oldest are only 22, newest just 17. These engines are pampered, they are never rushed, take their good old time, take lots of rests, and are pulling trains of negligible weight. 4000 horsepower, seldom asked to exceed 60mph, and usually paired with a helper engine or two. A freight engine, take the P32's for example, have 3100 horsepower, and haul quite a bit more cars at similar speed, all day long. Those things are just now being retired from Norfolk Southern in their 30's.

Our employer work standard and installation guide still has the bell circuit connected from the signal flasher unit. So wrong!!! Some of our x-ings use the horizontal position(when gates are in down position) to mute the bell. However, the bell power is still from the flashing circuit. Another weird configuration! We are not regulated by the CPUC, we are regulated by PUCO(Ohio). Also our flash rate for the signals must be 50 rates per min, compared to BNSF standard of 60 rates per min. If we used BNSF standards( flash rate only), we would of committed a LEVEL 3 problem/violation. Bad News!!!
