My dad had a Continental of this era...I think it was a little newer than this, maybe a 73 or 74...he drove it for years and after he started his business in the late 70s he usually just drove his work truck all the time so his Conti sat in his backyard for years until he sold it to somebody on the cheap because it had sat for so long not running. Said he saw it driving around town years later and he instantly regretted selling it....but he had a lot of different vehicles in the 70s/80s (couple Caballeros, k2500, k1500 GMC trucks and his venerable 81 f350 dually with the 400 he used for work) so his old Conti kinda fell out of favor since he had so many things to drive. Neat car man.

In June, 1971, I had to opportunity to drive a used 1971 Lincoln Continental 4dr, Brown metallic, with a brown leather interior. The Lincoln was smooth and rattle free, unlike the new 1971 Cadillacs. The Lincoln felt tight like a bank vault, unlike the 1971 Cadillacs. The only difference was the Lincoln was more "Thirsty" when it came to gas, than the 1971 Cadillac. The 1971 Cadillacs were in a new body style, totally different than the 1965-1970 Cadillacs. A lot of body shake and door windows falling loose and falling into the doors.

if I'm not wrong the Lincoln could have had a 429. I love GMs but those caddies stunk on ice, it was like they designed it to rattle. The one redeeming quality they have is they go 20 by just letting off the brakes .

Had a 1973 4 door continental for 9 years (1990-1999). It became my Hotrod Lincoln, it had the better flow D3 quench heads than the open chamber D2 heads. Rebuilt the 460 (466) with new .030 over pistons, rv cam 204 deration @ .050, 3 angle valve job, torquer manifold with 750 reworked holly, no port work, stock exhuast manifolds, dual exhaust with hi flow mufflers, stock ignition, stock air leaner, 87 octane fuel, C6 w/shift kit, stock tires, 3:70 rear gears. The darn thing ran 14.96 @ 94 mph 1/4 mile! pretty impressive for no serious head work or wild cam! It also got 2nd gear scratches easily. It was nothing but pure pleasure to drive with that long hood and the incredible set you back in the seat acceleration! I miss it and those days so much. Thankyou for bringing back those good memories.

@@CJColvin Hello there. I had a bad accident in 1987 (head injury) had to eventually get rid of my old but nice 1972 international truck that I pulled a car hauler. The stiff ride gave me dizziness along with severe head aches. I thought after time I would get better but didn't. If I drove something smooth, I was fine. I always liked the big Ford-Mercury-Lincoln cars with the 460. So I decided thats what I need to get to pull my hauler. I found the 1973 Lincoln Continental and it already had a hitch too. It was beautiful. Bought it in April of 1990, had it till May of 1999. I phased it out because I found a 1975 Ranchero in October of 1998. It worked just as good and was smooth too. So I got rid of the Lincoln (Hotrod-Lincoln)! But I really did enjoy the Lincoln the best! Boy was it fun. There was a few Saturday night cruisers that I just had to mingle with! Oh what fun it was to have the big sleeping giant to wake up on a Saturday night cruise!!

@@CJColvin Hello there again. Yes the Ranchero had plans too. I had it from October 1998 to September 2015. When I got the Ranchero the 351M was very tired. I thought of going thru it but I had the 460 in the Lincoln that I had already pulled out to commence the phase 2 operation in the spring of 1999. I had already developed another set of D3 (undrilled smog pump holes in exaust ports) heads. Phase 2 was to simply port & pollish as they say & to install the 216 duration @ .050 cam with the eldellbrock performer intake & hooker headers. But all that was delayed because the heads as good as they looked were a total mess!! I had always thought of putting larger valves in (phase 3) but thought that was just getting carried away. Well I had to go to phase 3 on the heads to get them to perform, and perform they did! Even with the stock 3:00 rear gears & the small cam (216 @ .050) with the performer intake with 830 holley & the hooker headers, the Ranchero felt like it was ready to sit on the pole for the Daytona 500!

I had the exact same problem with the brakes on a 1970 Continental Sedan many years ago. I just looked up the repair invoice, from 1996, and it was the brake booster. It was quite difficult to diagnose, because as you say, it was intermittent. A good source for parts, if you are not aware of them is Lincoln Land in Clearwater, Florida, owned by Chris Dunn. Another is also here in Clearwater, The Lincoln-Mercury Old Parts Store, owned by Herb Scheffer and run by his daughter Kelly. Kelly will have parts for your Mercurys too. I'm really enjoying the channel and concur with many of your observations about some of these cars, being old enough to have driven many of the late 60s early 70s cars back when they were new. I'll probably post many more comments when I get to them. :)

As far as your brakes go, I'd have to lean towards the brake booster. Had the same problem last week on my 69 Chevelle. Front disc's on front, drum rear. The pedal would go to the floor, and not return, locking up the brakes. Once ignition was turned off, vacuum at booster was not there, and brake pedal would release from the floor. $132 later for a new booster and problem was solved. Good luck.

I had equated Lincoln's selection of the Frigidaire AC compressor with models produced later in the decade. It's nice to see they were using it in 1972, as our full-size 1972 Ford factory-AC wagon, which I believe used a York unit, had really marginal cooling, taking forever to cool aft of the front seat. Coupled with unperforated vinyl upholstery, the car was an absolute penalty box on triple-digit days.

The seatbelt module in my 1977 F150 has a buzzer, and controls the warning light in the instrument cluster with a timer. If I unplug the wire at the driver side belt retractor, then the buzzer doesn't sound, but the seatbelt warning light still comes on for its five seconds or whatever. I leave it unplugged because the buzzer will cause the starter to crank slow! I can turn on all the lights, and the blower fan on high, and she'll crank like normal. But if that damned buzzer comes on, it somehow robs power from the starter. Need to try some no-alox grease on my engine block-to-body ground cable - or get the proper braided strap...

Cool Black Conti. My '69 MK III taught me a lot about vacuum hoses and leaks. The service manual advised to tune the idle with the headlights on. Lots of lines: Headlight doors, door locks, remote trunk release. Also I was advised to check the metal cannister vacuum reservoir for pin hole leaks that can occur from moisture over time. * A little Flex-Seal comes in handy if you can't find a replacement reservoir. Lincoln's of that era are supposed to have a gizmo that increases the engine speed to assist cooling if the temp rises to a certain level. For the life of me, I never could comprehend how that would work. Then again, I wouldn't want to be behind a overheating 460. Some Conti's were optioned with Sure Track, but you'd already know if yours had it and that's only for the rear brakes. I'll bet it's a combination of the pedal pushrod adjustment and a blocked pressure relief hole in the master cylinder. Sometimes it's the simplest thing that causes the biggest headache with classic cars. I spy Nottingham Woven Brocade Cloth and vinyl. Are those Twin Comfort Lounge seats with the passenger side recliner?

My 1966 Mercury Parklane Breezeway's brakes locked up after I installed new wheel cylinders and shoes. It almost destroyed the new brake shoes trying to drive it with the brakes applied! If I am not mistaken, the issue was a plugged up very small fluid return hole in the bottom of the master cylinder. I was not even aware of the hole being there, but the fluid needs to get back into the master cylinder reservoir when the brakes are released. When cleaning the old master cylinder (after already buying a new one), I noticed that when I blew air pressure into the master cylinder (I forget where exactly), all of a sudden a small particle flew out of the bottom of the reservoir - opening up the hole. Yes, the joys of owning many old cars!
