Very thoughtful and tasteful assessment of '60's styling. All of these have timeless style. The first car I bought was a '65 Riviera with 64,000 miles, in '76, at age 18. Two years later a "67 Eldo with 62,000 miles. I let both go when investing in my business, but I still own a '65 Riv and '67 Eldorado to this day. I think they are both stunning!

As you said, GM really produced an abundance of beautifully styled cars in the 1960s. These that you've chosen all deserve to be on the list of the top 10, but there are probably others who would make a list of the top 15 or top 20. What a wonderful time to have been alive.

For me it was the '66 Toronado that made me stop and stare, wondering what planet that car came from. I was a 12 year old kid that was just beginning to be interested in automobiles. I think seeing that car made me start taking more notice of the styling of all cars. And I appreciate the beauty of the '65 Impala much more than I did back then; probably because I saw it as an "old person's car" back then, and now I am one!

What a great video. I was a teen in the 60's and remember all these cars well. My high school counselor had that model of Toronado and I recall what a beautiful car that was, it was parked near the entrance I used to get into school. The 60's were truly a great era for GM in full-size cars. We had a 1959 Oldsmobile and that was my favorite car my parents ever owned. I really enjoy this channel, your work is very informative.

Like that 1960 Buick dashboard! My family had a beautiful bright red '65 Bel Air. Those '65-'66 Caddys were great and the '67-'68 looked even better when the headlights went canted forward. We traded in our '65 Bel Air for a '69 Grand Prix. Couldn't help getting one since our local Pontiac dealer lived next door and was parking his GP demonstrator in front of his house and Mom fell for it.

So glad you included the underappreciated 1960 Buick and 1960 Cadillac--choices that seem to have been controversial judging by some of the comments. I don't see the 1960 Buick as "doughy" or pudgy-looking relative to the '59s. To me, all that chiseled side-sculpturing makes it more muscular-looking than the '59--like having a defined 6-pack instead of a smooth stomach. (Some of the other commentators also called the '60 Cadillac pudgy, whereas it's much sleeker and uncluttered than the bloated, garish '59s, and much better put together stylistically than the jagged chrome and sheet metal hodgepodge of the '61s.) Only real mistake on the list was the '69 Grand Prix. I think styling took a dive across the whole GM lineup in '69 and continued to devolve in the '70s. So, if GTOs were ineligible for this list for being sports cars, then replace the '69 Grand Prix with the '66/'67 Tempest/LeMans, which have the same faultless exterior styling as the GTOs. Or substitute the razor-sharp 1962 Cadillac, which corrected the styling flaws of the '61!

Who needed an art gallery when you could just go down to your local Buick, Olds, Pontiac, Chevy or Cadillac dealership in the 1960s? Not only could you admire some of the most mouth-watering, gorgeous automotive designs... But you could drive it home, too! All those good looks also came with great mechanicals and quality interiors. I absolutely agree with you on the 1960 Cadillac. The small changes from 59 are truly impressive when you take a moment to really compare the two. The 59 is iconic and I love it, but the 60 is a masterpiece in styling, advancing a design that was absolutely over the top into something tasteful. My favorite body style on these are the 6 window hardtop sedans. I'm sure I've said it before, but I actually like the 68 more than the 67 Eldorado. I think the front cornering lamps were one of the best changes ever made.

'67 was the year GM quality started it's nosedive. Inramentally at first, but quickly crashing to crap by the early '70's. My dad always bought a new Olds every 2 years in those days. The last best one was a '66 98 4-door, which I didn't like the looks of, but it was a good car. Thank you for a great selection of beautiful cars, Adam. GM design under Bill Mitchell remains a high point for automotive design in the U.S. and probably the world. As to your #1 pick - yeah! When one of those Eldorado's appeared in traffic you couldn't help but give it a second or even third glance. They set the standard for expensive automobiles in their day from a sporty yet elegant design perspective as well as their advanced FWD engineering. Indeed, they set the pattern for Cadillac design until the 1976 Seville was introduced. The one element that really sets all of these GM cars above the herd is the beautiful surface development, no matter what the overall theme is for each of them. That group of designers put the finishing touches in each of those vehicles' body surfaces to get the most visual interest. You mentioned the gorgeous fender peaks on the 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix as a prime example. These vehicles really set a standard. When my tired eyes see something like that stupid, ponderous new Jaguar with it's blocky, uninteresting cement-like forms or that stainless steel dumpster-on-wheels Tesla cyber truck I almost lose my lunch. Thanks again for this exercise in true automotive beauty!

It’s a beautiful design that I feel does. The best job to cleanly exemplify aircraft inspired styling cues without being wacky like so many other auto makers of the time created. I was surprised you didn’t include both the 63 and 68 Corvette Sting Ray(?) Thanks for posting on the subject, I always enjoy hearing your take and reasons for your choices. GM Was indeed the style leader of the world, and dare I say of all time during this era.

Adam,you got this one right with your #1 pick! Somehow I knew before I watched the video, that the 67 Eldorado would be number one. I would absolutely love to see one of these cars in person. I'm a Buick guy because my dad was, and I love them. This car is GM design at its best. I can only imagine what the designers, and the people who had the stamp all the parts had to go through to make this a reality. The 67 eldorado was definitely a landmark car for Cadillac. Being able to see and look over one of these in person is on my bucket list.I love your channel! The 68- 71 Grand Prix are a top on my list also,It's a car that in my eyes just looks right.DeLorean even gave a Duesenburg reference to the GP with the the model J ,and the SSJ. If you look at that front end of the 71 and 72 GP, and the boat tail look at the rear,it all comes together.Once again Adam,well done!

My favorite is the 1965 Buick Riviera. A buddy of mine picked up a decent roller about 10 years ago for dirt cheap. Missing the engine and transmission, he dropped in whatever he had laying around his shop so it wound up with a 400 CSB and a 200R4 transmission. The paint isn't perfect but good enough and the interior is in really good shape. He drives it around on Sunday's and just has fun with it. Love the clam style hidden headlights. Just an awesome looking car.

My best friend's father bought one new in '65. White with a red interior. That car really stood out in a neighborhood of mostly working class folks. His dad was a traveling salesman who needed a comfortable car for long trips. He got a car allowance from his company which made it affordable. A bunch of us got a ride in it when he brought it home. Pretty cool experience when you're 10 and your parents have a Rambler American.

In 1965 I turned 12 years old. I had thought the '63 Riviera was the most beautiful car I had ever seen. And then...the '65 came out with the hidden headlights and what I thought could not be improved upon somehow was...and then, in the fall of 1965 I beheld the '66 Riviera...and as beautiful as the '65 was (and is) somehow, impossibly, the '66 topped it....surely NOTHING could best the '66 Riv....and then....the '67 with the exchanging of the block letters for the beautiful and graceful script emblems....and nothing, NOTHING has topped it since. Nothing could.

I'm a '66 Toronado guy. The El Dorado has a spectacular face and tush, and an aggressive space capsule look to the passenger area, but its bigness makes these areas decouple a bit for me. As usual, though, it's great to experience the pure joy Adam feels for these cars; they really prove that a production vehicle can be equally beautiful to one from an Italian body maker. Little nuggets like sharing the "Art & Science" 00's Caddies that were a masterpiece of singular design in an era known for same-same bodies. I look more closely at cars that are described on this channel, following the character lines as they are described and taking them in. Details jump out, like the small, unusual bite that appears in the top of the Toronado's rear bumper, near the wheel well. Great stuff!

Nicely done, but one I would've added is the 1967 Chevy Impala SS two door hardtop. That car has so much presence, in my opinion the peak of the 60s Impalas even more than the 1965. Best dashboard and interior too.

Still on vacation, Adam? Hard to argue with your picks. As a child the first car I remember my dad owning was a ‘58 Pontiac Chieftain which he replaced with the car that was his absolute favorite… a midnight blue ‘60 Buick Invicta. The Invicta was placed between the LeSabre and Electra and was considered the “performance” model as it had the LaSabre’s wheelbase but the Electra’s 401 Fireball V-8. After ‘63 Buick dropped the Invicta name in favor of the Wildcat. Nice to see the photos you included are Invictas. Cheers! 👍👍👍

Great list! Can't argue with any of your picks. Trouble is....there are SO MANY cars of the 60s that just missed this list. It was truly the golden days of car design. Not just GM...all of the OEMs had similarly beautiful cars. Impossible to rank them all. Everyone has thier perticular favorites. Suffice it to say, that all of the cars built in the 60s and early 70s were truly the pinnicle of the stylists best efforts. Bravo to them all.

Good morning, Adam! You nailed it! I have one suggestion. Swap the 1968 Caprice for the 1965. The 1968 took the “Baby Cadillac” moniker to a new level: hidden headlights and wipers, cool dashboard and new knobs, elegant fabrics, cool roofline, new taillights. After you ponder that, let’s have a collective conversation about the hysterical comments about the 00 Jag. Perfectly named because it will come to naught. Thanks, Adam!

As always, nice job Adam. While Pontiac is well represented here how the 65 Bonneville is not on this list is indeed a blunder. GM design studio of the sixties were the envy of the automotive world!

That '66 Toronado must have been great in the snow with that huge iron engine over the front wheels. My brother had a 1972 El Dorado with FWD and it could plow through 2 foot snow like there was nothing there. But, the '66 Toronado still looks good from every angle, which is very rare.

My dad had a 1959 Buick Invicta convertible which he purchased new just prior to marrying my mom. What better car to follow that up with than the 1966 Buick Riviera he bought in June of 1966 from Krajenke Buick in Hamtramck MI. Prior to the 59 Buick he had the 1st car he purchased new a 1955 Chevy Bel Air convertible.

The ‘65 Riviera GS also had a 425 nailhead, with dual quad carbs. I was fortunate enough to own one years ago and remains my favorite classic car to drive. Cruised so sweetly at 70+ mph. Also my favorite car style of all time. When people modify these, you rarely see them touch the body, which speaks to its broad visual appeal.
@danielocarey9392Ай бұрын
The Dodge Challenger has the same basic shape with a little different aspect ratio.
@danielocarey9392Ай бұрын
From an aerospace engineer's perspective the '63 Riviera is the most respected among Rivieras. Why? Because it was designed as a car that behaved like an airplane in some ways. It had a continuously-variable torque transmission, the Turbine Drive. And its interior had more push forward sliders on the dash than either the '64 or '65. If a person took a ride in a jet s/he would expect no decidedly abrupt changes is power. The jet wouldn't shift. And that concept of Buick smoothness with an aircraft cockpit completed the ensemble. But a very beautiful GM design, new in '65, was the second generation Corvair. That probably was more beautiful (at least to magazine writers of the day) than most American cars, with a close second being the Impala for 1965. Engineering of the second generation 'Vair was about 50-years ahead of the status quo with an aluminum boxter rear-mounted engine- and fully independent suspension and a transaxle.
@brianlaurance8570Ай бұрын
You've chosen an impossible task, Adam, and I cannot argue with any of the choices you've made. GM's designs were stellar during the 1960's, and it is difficult to pick favorites. . . . For mainstream passenger cars, though, I favor the '65 - '70 Buick Wildcats and Electra 225's. I saw fine examples of those cars every day during the late-1960's, and was awestruck by their beautiful style.

I just have to add my first car a 1963 Pontiac tempest LeMans. Was a really great looking car, and my grandfather gave it to me as my first car. Wish I still had it! 326 V8 with the transmission in the rear, what a neat design.
@danielocarey9392Ай бұрын
The transmission in the rear was on the Tempest which also had independent suspension. Twas very modern. Many had the Pontiac Iron Duke 4 (engine). But you had the extraordinary and legendary 326 V-8.

@danielocarey9392 the iron Duke had not been invented yet. They actually came with a half of a V8. Leaving the cylinders on a slant.
