Dogs!
Enough about humans and more about some creatures that matter, you no doubt were saying in your mind. So here's a story on pets. This is the story of Hachiko, who is likely the most famous dog in human history. But what is it about this dog that convinced the world to take notice?
We went around Japan to tell the story of the loyal dog who unwittingly saved his breed. Say hello to Hachiko, a very good dog.

I love the one at 5:33 mark. He is getting his scratch on, and he is in Heaven. Felines are the same way, you scratch a Cat on it's chest or at the base of it's tail, it will love you till the day you die. Seems like a fairly amiable and playful breed, and if I could have a Canine, these Akita would be on the short list. Is the Akita an 'attention hound' who love laying down next to you, seeking their Human companion's affection?

@@T2266 Don't forget Balto. That said I named a dog after Hachi, but not Laika or Balto. Man I miss that dog. I came into a situation where my rental owners demanded I got rid of one of my 3 dogs. It was either get rid of Hachiko and his mate or get rid of the new puppy who was sick with parvo and would die if we gave her up. She wasn't exactly pretty and the treatment was expensive. The mutt wasn't friendly either. After a few weeks of searching we found Hachi and Boo-Boo a new home on a ranch and managed to save the mutt who didn't exactly get along with the vets. Hachi ended up trying to get back home, which we found out after a trucker called us after picking him up. We got him back to his new master and the puppy ended up saving my wife from a home invader, as well as chasing away all the coyotes away from our neighborhood. We miss our corgis, but I'm sure they are happier there, and I wouldn't trade our mutt for the world.

We have a similar story about a loyal dog here in Scotland called Greyfriars Bobby. Its about a policeman called Auld Jock and his dog Bobby who did patrols around Greyfriars churchyard until Jock died. Bobby would then spend over 14 years guarding the grave of Jock until Bobby died when he was 16. There’s now a statue of him outside the churchyard with his grave being a tourist attraction. Is really interesting how a similar stories about loyal dogs are found all over the world

I want to tell you about a good dog named Tasso out of Bavaria in Germany, he was a mix of German Shepherd and a Labrador and he was so much powerful and muscular and was owned by my sister. People who didn´t know him were sometimes afraid of seeing him loose (with the guidance of my sister!), but he only wanted to make new friends, and within time, all people passing our street always were so satisfied with Tasso, and he greeted everybody! He was such a good dog and died at the age of 14 years old! People passing our street are still asking for Tasso but then whe have to tell them he is sadly not here anymore but in heaven! Tasso, thanks for all the good times with you!

So after I watched the video, I looked up Hachiko's story on Wikipedia, and that of his owner... and this line made me cry... "Hachikō is buried next to his guardian, Hidesaburō Ueno". I think the video nails it. We want to believe that, as we love our animal friends, they love us in return. And then, when we pass, we wait at the bridge to be reunited with them.

If anyone is interested, the Scottish equivalent from Edinburgh is 'Grayfriars Bobby'. After his owner died he returned to sit by his owners grave in Grayfriars graveyard to guard it every day until his own death 14 years later. He was a Skye Terrier and there is a statute of him in Edinburgh too. I guess these dogs lived and died but ultimately served a higher purpose for other dogs by showing what a dog is capable of

Hachiko was an Akita puppy who waited for his deceased master to come home from the train. He waited 9 years and died a while later. There is a statue of Hachiko, waiting for his master, at the railroad station where his master got off. Hachi teaches us loyalty. That no matter how long it takes for that person to come back........ Be waiting with open arms.

What I wonder is if the dog ever learned what happened to its caretaker. Or if any dog in any of these countless situations ever learn. I think it's worse not knowing what happened. I know dogs aren't as intelligent as us, but they understand us so well. I can't help but think about how sad the dog must've felt. Not knowing if something happened or believing that its caretaker abandoned it. Death/trajedy is a natural part of life and I've always admired people who look past the pain. I think there's something incredible about individuals who can smile upon the memories and experiences they've created, rather than letting pain overcome them. After all life should be enjoyed and the sorrow that one faces may be great, but it isn't the end. However above all else I think one of the worst things someone may endure is not having the chance to say goodbye. Missing the chance to say thanks for the time well spend, to say I'll miss you, or even to let them know you'll be thinking of them.

People should be extremelly careful about owning an Akita. I owned one and trained it well... but in the first year of me getting her I had three owners ring me trying to get rid of theirs becasue they did not train it properly. How did I train her? I play-fought with her daily and never let her win. She also slept outside and only came inside when i was there. She was immesnly intelligent and when I had to go away for 6 weeks she jumped the fence (we never worked out how) and visited all the places she knew I visited... including the vet (where she was found sitting and waiting for me). She was amazing with humans and treated every human with care and respect... dogs, however, were another matter. I walked her at night because when she would see other dogs she would try to play fight them and dominate them. While this was alright with big dogs who rarely challenged her, small dogs lacked the pack mentality and thus were at risk of being attacked by my dog. My dog had been in the presence of dogs many times and grew up around dogs, but this was still always a problem. I had to put her down when she attacked and gutted a poodle, killing it. In the process, the poodle owner (a great guy and my neighbor) got in the way and she drew blood from the owner's hand. It was my dog's fault. If I had been there it most likely would not have happened. She was the most intelligent and fantastic dog I ever owned... but I rarely recommend the breed to people. I am a secondary school teacher... if you can not handle 30 teenagers then you probably cannot handle one Akita.

But loving people children especially! Was her greatest quality and she never had food aggression, i could put my hand in her bowl while she ate in fact my face right next to hers while she ate and i got kisses!! Greatest most loyal dog ever!! She was so well trained so disciplined especially on our walks, I was the leader i say stop sit go stay dont pull etc she would see another dog loose or not and i was the boss! But we had times where we were attacked by loose dogs and she lost it then i had to let her go! But that wasnt my fault! The dogs came right over to her while she was behaving and jumped on her to fight so i let her go... Needless to say she never lost..

Rick, just for some background, Balto was a sled dog in Alaska that led a 7 day straight run in the middle of winter from Nome to Anchorage and back. The sled dog team he was on was carrying medicine for diphtheria and in doing so pretty much saved the children of the town. The dog itself was given a huge amount of honor and there is a dog sled race done on the track they took. Afterward, however, I don’t remember the dog being treated well. If I remember correctly it bounced between museums and shelters but was always restless for the great outdoors, as it was usually kept cooper up. At least in America Balto is fairly famous, but I doubt it elsewhere.

I had always heard of Balto, but basically on a whim I watched the Disney movie called Togo and found out that 150 dogs ran in the diphtheria serum run. Balto is only famous because he ran the final 55 miles and delivered the diphtheria serum. Also he wasn’t even the lead dog. I actually can’t remember if Fox was co-lead dog or was the actual lead dog, but the press decided ignore Fox and focus all their attention on Balto. But the the TRUE hero of the run was Togo. He ran 264 miles compared to an average of 31 miles each for the other teams. It’s a really good movie actually if you have Disney Plus.

@@savetheanimals982 if the reciepents of criticism view it as intellectual pursuit and non-political then yes. Animal rights activists from nepal, india and from other places were able to decrease mass animal sacrifice in Gadimai, Nepal by 90%. If you haven't heard of Gadimai, google it. A word of caution: it's heart wrenching. You know most of the time, people believe those that criticize and attack have ulterior motives and what they express are not sincere words. This is the biggest reason people find criticism hard to digest. For example non-vegeterian hindus (many hindus are vegeterian) criticise those that eat cows but we find it hard to receive because they themselves eat chicken, goats etc but i have encountered vegan activists urging us to avoid animal products which we do not find offensive because we believe they are sincere.

Man guys I really love your videos. It is just a great format, so much information in these short minutes and as always well spoken. For this particular episode, I couldn't help but noticed that, how the cameraman was able to guide, backwards I assume, between the trees? And as always, my favorite at the end is the credits. Great video as always, keep it up!

If you make it to South Africa, would recommend a possibly episode on the hound dogs used to track Rhino poachers in Kruger national park. A hot spot for the poachers acquisition of horns for the black market.
