RARELY HEARD INDIGENOUS CHANTING in the Philippines 🇵🇭 Legendary T'Boli Chanter YE GAS

T'Boli indigenous chanting in the Philippines is powerful, distinctive and soulful. When Photographer Jacob Maentz told me to look for legendary chanter Ye Gas during my visit to Lake Sebu in Mindanao, I had no idea that the host I was staying with already had it in mind to introduce me to her. Several days into my visit to the South Cotabato province, I was gifted a special concert with Ye Gas, who is the last surviving chanting Filipina of the T'Boli tribe. She shared with me her beautiful voice that has captivated her community (and the world) for over 40 years.

Ang katutubong pag-awit ng T'Boli sa Pilipinas ay makapangyarihan, katangi-tangi at madamdamin. Nang sabihin sa akin ng Photographer na si Jacob Maentz na hanapin ang maalamat na chanter na si Ye Gas sa aking pagbisita sa Lake Sebu sa Mindanao, wala akong ideya na ang host na aking tinutuluyan ay nasa isip na na ipakilala ako sa kanya. Ilang araw sa aking pagbisita sa lalawigan ng South Cotabato, nabigyan ako ng isang espesyal na konsiyerto kasama si Ye Gas, na siyang huling nakaligtas na pag-awit na Pilipina ng tribong T'Boli. Ibinahagi niya sa akin ang kanyang magandang boses na nakabihag sa kanyang komunidad (at sa mundo) sa loob ng mahigit 40 taon.

Enjoyed your video of Yegas! By the way, there are other Tboli chanters as well as Yegas. Just last year the Philippine National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), awarded the ‘Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan,’ the National Living Treasures Award, bestowed annually to 9 traditional artists throughout the Philippines, 3 of them Tboli in 2023, including Boi Rosie Sula for chanting.

I don’t know the exact translation of what she is singing, but I know she is inspired by the events and feelings surrounding her in the moment. I am able to understand that she says “camera” and “American” at one point during her chant. It’s magical! 🌟
