The reason it is called "Fish Tea" is because in the old days (40's-60's) Jamaican dance hall's were very different. It was a gathering place where the people actually wore suits and long dresses. They served food there too. Fish tea was the appetizer in the beginning of the dance and it was served in tea cups hence the name Fish "Tea".
@uglarinn27155 жыл бұрын
Makes a lot of sense, actually. Jamaica was a British colony for a very long time and, in England, they often refer to the evening meal as Tea (so I am told).

Life for me has been challenging as of late, dealing with the loss of my brother and my Dad who has been blessed with 86 years of life recent illness. While frying chicken for my Dad's dinner I enjoyed watching your videos. The calmness of Mikko's voice and your curious questions Matthew made me feel like I was right there with you all, sitting beside Mikko's wife. Funny, all was alright in my world again. That fish tea looked delish. Yum. Thanks Matthew. BTW, it's called fish tea because its a light version of a soup. It's like a broth, without too many heavy food ingredients. Plus sometimes some people would just strain it and drink only the liquid, hence tea. Last note, they say the Dr fish has a lot of healing qualities for our body, and is very good health wise. That's why it's called Doctor fish.
@karlwhalls29156 жыл бұрын
C J Mills Its called ‘Doctor Fish’ because it’s real common name is ‘Surgeonfish’. Ya’ll just got it wrong and decided to keep it that way and be proud of it being wrong 😂 story of Jamaica!

@@karlwhalls2915 well, it's not that we're keeping it wrong. That is the story I was told growing up. Others obviously gave different versions and explanations.
