I also go over specs and test out RetroPie on this slimmed down Pi3.

How to update your pi3b/+ stretch image to work on the new pi3a+
Put your sd card into your pi3b and go into the terminal. Type:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y upgrade
After that is done go into raspi-config and make these changes.
In advanced options
Memory split = 348
And in boot options make it
Auto login into console
Let it reboot an make sure it boots into emulationstation. Then turn it off and move the sd card to the pi3a+ and turn it on.
You might need to reset the WiFi country, I didn’t but others have.

For PS1 I always test it with Gex 3, because it's to my knowledge one of the most graphically advanced games on the PS1. If it can't play the intro on 60 fps it failed the test.

Pretty excited for upcoming builds with this. Resolves some performance problems with the zero and the wifi and bluetooth problem with the compute module not to mention the special hardware needed for the compute module. For handheld builds definetly very exciting.

i got me one with a case i printed and i plug this little USB hub that breaks out to one USB 3 and two usb 2, and it's really perfect for what i use it with, a screen that use to be a part of a van dvd kit running composite (with 240p for games). great lil machine even years later

Yea it seems kinda close Terrific review ETA does it again there hasn't been a video I didnt like .. Which SBC do you think is best to teach children how to program your own little gaming system I'm doing a small rec. center out of my church to teach well not so well off kids on these awesome little machines and I use your videos in a group setting to teach so you are doing allot for people and you dont even know it . Since it doesn't have the ethernet port or the stacked USBs this might be able to fit in an NES cart to make a more powerful Pi Cart. It also looks it has the same layout for screws and the same layout with the HDMI and micro USB it would work with the RetroFlag Pi cases?

It is missing a SATA controller which would let you use hard drives instead of SDHC cards maybe the SDHC card can be used for startup script and BIOS but SATA for program and data storage.

for what it is its great, an updated a series is a really good idea, though i think removing the lan port is a shame and a gig of ram would have been nice, the single port is ok since in most projects we add a hub anyway. my biggest gripe is why usb2? its 2018!!!, if you only have one port it should be usb3 or usbC atleast.

As long as they use the Videocore IV, which is what makes the Raspberry Pi what it is, it is stuck with USB2.

I literally cut the USB/LAN end off of my 3B to fit into a Game Boy. This actually has a smaller footprint than my literally hacked board. I can’t wit to get retropie up and running now that I know what to do. I spent about 45 minutes not getting it to work :-/

Anyone had issues with dualshock 4 controller with PSX emulator? I've got rPi zero W and, surprisingly, it launches some 3d games quite okay, but gamepad does not work properly there. Games only react on left analog stick (or usb keyboard). I tried to set it as "analog" controller in config file - did not help. Gamepad works fine in any other emulator, only psx does not work. Will 8Bitdo controller work?

I’d say yes, even with only 512MB of ram it should be faster

In addition to only having half the ram, keep in mind there's no Ethernet jack and only one USB port. Maybe that's not a big deal for you, but if you're just sticking it in a Retroflag NES case or something, just get the B+. The place where this shines is if you need to cram it into something tiny.

The B+ was a small upgrade. The processor upgrade is just a small boost to speed and some other improvements. No need to get a Pi B+ or A+ if the regular Pi 3 is doing what you want it to do, or if you expect a big speed improvement. If you just want another Pi, then getting the plus version now is not a bad idea. The main improvements I recall were a boost to the wired and wireless network speeds.

I was gonna admit my stupid over-optimism from that last video since it has 512MB RAM. But I think needs more testing before we call this an PS1 emulation machine. BTW, my local MicroCenter is selling the RPi 3 B+ for $29.99. And it's been like that for almost a year hence this RPi 3 A+ doesn't look appealing for me to buy

That's a decent discount. More reason to stick with the B. The A model isn't a great choice for most unless they have a specific need for the layout. It's not like the B is huge. Plus, the B has more RAM and connectivity, and tons of case options which is worth keeping in mind.

So.. I really love the retropi interface. I love the idea of booting straight to an interface. I have one of the Retroflag NESPi cases for the 3b+, and I have a Pi Cart as well. I LOVE these little systems. The only (major) issue is that the Raspberry Pi is not powerful enough to run N64, so I’m in the process of building a Launchbox / Big Box setup. Bonus that it will run systems newer than N64. But I don’t like that I can’t have all of this inside my NESPi and Pi Cart, and I don’t like that I can’t boot straight to Big Box, and I don’t like that I can’t seem to get Big Box to look as good as RetroPi. ETA Prime, what is your suggestion, and do you have a tutorial that will show me how to build the system I’m looking for?

You could alway “steam stream” to your pi from your pc. That’s what I do to play Skyrim.

I actually like the stock Big Box theme and if I’m not using that I’m using the unified Theme. I have a video coming up on the all new Bean Canyon i5 intel NUC and its tiny and a beast. But it’s costly “paying for the form factor.

You can "boot" into a program on the PC, just configure it to run automatically at startup. If you prefer the emulation station UX and themes, then just install and configure emulation station on your pc...

ETA PRIME Big Box is just not as smooth and polished as RetroPi. But it’s been a while since I last messed with it. I’ll give it a try. And the Bean Canyon looks interesting, and I don’t mind paying for it, but I would still like for it to boot into a UI and not Windows. I wish RetroPi would be ported to x86. The Windows version hasn’t been updated in over 4 years either. But then there’s the drawback of not being able to use my epic NESPi case.

Raspberry Pi B+ is the best. It should run Chrono Cross though other less powerful ones should also run it fine (2b onwards except any zeros). Getting 3b+ will future proof your build as well. Hope that helps.

@Kentucky Fried Juden all of my projects with the Pi Zero I have soldered straight to the pads of the GPIO Yesterday after getting this board I have already desolder the pins, the USB port and the audio jack. When you are making handheld devices any reduction in space is precious.
