It'll probably happen. But the 400 seems like something the Foundation has always wanted to make. A great little, super cheap, all-in-one educational computer.

I am working on doing something like this with either an IBM model M and the computer 4 w/ it's up board, or a similar full sized keyboard. I'd be using the pcie slot to connect in a usb 3.0 card to have both and ssd and the keyboard itself if I cannot get the ps/2 to work with the custom hat that has been made specifically to use them with the rpi.

@@TheTurnipKing Actually, there is enough space for a M.2 SSD and USB3 adapter inside the Pi 400. All you'll have to do is wire it to the USB3 port.

@@PatsFanGermany There's a couple of issues with that. You'll also want to physically block external access to that USB port so that other devices don't get plugged into it accidently and it does reduce to you two external USB ports, only one of which will be USB3. It also makes it difficult to reclaim the slot. It might be simpler all around to drill a hole into the case, lead the cable out of the back and plug it in.

@@TheTurnipKing That works as well. Depends on how clean you want your build to be. The fastest / cheapest way would probably be to buy a cheap KingSpec SSD from Aliexpress and tape it to the underside of the Pi 400 right next to the ventilation slots...

I bought one a few weeks ago and really like it except for one thing. The keyboard is quite “bouncy”. I expect the first thing that will wear out is the backspace key.

The Zero W is a great match for the Official Keyboard, since it really benefits from the presence of the hub built into the keyboard if you're going to do any actual computing on it (as opposed to using it like a wireless, headless device, which is something else the zero is great for)

I tried using one for a couple days, and I find that the keyboard loses keystrokes because if you hit a key in the corner, even though you get the tactile feel of a key going down, it doesn't always register. So these are really crumby keyboards. The fact that no one points this out means that people aren't actually using these computers. :/ Also, you're wrong that they're good for basic youtube watching. You have to get non-official software to watch youtube, because there's no good vp9 codec for this SOC. So you need a plugin to tell youtube to serve something else - but it only serves h264 (which the pi can't really handle above 1080p or above 30 hz) and it refuses to serve it above 1080p. Actually MAYBE it can handle 1080p 60hz, but it can't resize them. No 4k videos, no 2k videos and 1080p at slightly worse quality than other platforms. The only format it handles well is h265, which youtube doesn't use.

On such small keyboard, you actually don't want corner hits to register. Double hitting keys are more common on compact keyboard than full size. H264 is engineered to do up to 1080p. If you want higher, that's h265. Blame KZbin for not doing h265. Why would you want 4K on KZbin anyway? You mean Netflix?

I'm not talking about accidentally hitting the corner of one key while hitting another, I'm saying that if you don't hit the key in the center, it misses the keystroke some of the time but FEELS like it went down and registered.

The Raspberry Pi 400 is ruined if any one of the 76 keys on the (cheap chiclet) keyboards ever fails. The keyboard cannot be disassembled or repaired, and spare modules or aftermarket parts are not available. If the keyboard is faulty, then there's no point to having this all-in-one design. Found this out the hard way. A severe vulnerability in an otherwise desirable system.

@@RichardKinch they improved the pi's support for youtube by the way. An OS update made it so it can handle vp9 at 1080 30hz better than it used to handle h264. I really wish these chips were as good at graphics as a cell phone SOC though, this is embarrassing.

In the pi keyboard (not 400) it's possible that will fit the Raspberry Pi 3 A+? it's cheapper and more thin than the pi4...

Thanks for covering the pi 400. The board has a revision of the soc cpu, it runs at a higher clock speed, it can be slightly overclocked. The issues I have with it are no audio socket, no 8gb ram option, KZbin playback still a hit n miss affair (hopefully software fixes for all pi boards will fix this) and the lack of ssd or m2 connection. However, the reality is that these are minor issues and could increase the price if implented. I'm tempted to grab a pi4+ (assuming they bring the 400 chip to a regular pi)

My big question: Is it wireless? I almost ordered one but could not find any information about whether it supports wireless communication. The only reason I would order one is so I do not have to bring my expensive laptop when I travel to Europe. I need to be able to check my email while in Europe, and the hotels I stay in generally offer a wireless connection to the Internet. And only wireless.

No M2 slot, no gpio cover included as an appliance pi great as a desktop with sd card a fail and the usb3 power not fully supported. Prefer Pi4 argonone v2 M2 case and a wireless keyboard
