I was shocked you didn’t talk more about the “free association” fish. If anyone doesn’t know, free association is part of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis in which the patient says whatever comes to mind, no matter how embarrassing or irrelevant. The free association is then interpreted by the therapist and is supposed to give them a glance into the patient’s unconscious mind. Maybe the music of side order could be the Memverse’s interpretation of the unconscious minds of those trapped inside?

24:49 This is pure speculation but I believe that the jellyfish in Side Order could be based off of the immortal jellyfish, who live up to their name by being well…immortal. They achieve this immortality by (in layman’s terms) reverting back into a larvae state instead of dying. I think that idea represents the gameplay loop of Side Order- going up to floor 30 and then starting over again in an ostensibly endless cycle. On another note, I’m not quite sure how to necessarily put this but I just want to say how happy I am to be able to help out with this sort of translation stuff! I wish I had something more insightful to add to the discussion from an interview POV but I do not, lmao.

I think that the "octotroopers who do not metamorphose into a humanoid form" might refer to individuals like the Octo Samurai from S2, he clearly has a humanoid form BUT it's not truly an Octoling. Octotroopers are said to not be as intelligent as an average Octoling so I guess individuals like the Octo Samurai are the limit of their intelligence, besides, there are octoling societies in the Splatoon world that weren't influenced by the octarian army, like the Splatlands region in which Octolings have lived for many years along Inklings and there aren't records of the existence of "octotrooper-like" beings. I think DJ Octavio is somehow behind their creation, who knows.

Funfact the Parallel canon's stage has "runners" in the background, these are injected plastic trays essentially that you snip plastic pieces off of to make lil toys n figures with the most widely known example being Gundam's Gundam Plamo (Or gunpla for short) figures.

Well, their demographic is teens. In-house they might not be thinking of the older people playing the game. Like think about the World Championships. I think they are very valid, because not everyone is X rank material. Most players were around A rank in Splatoon 2. The game is supposed to be fun, not Dark Souls hard.

​@@lorettabes4553okay but as far as rougelikes go, side order was pretty easy. besides basically the last 10 floors of every run, its not super tough, but usually they're good with adding bonus stuff to keep the people looking for more difficulty occupied like me. side order.. didn't really do that. the risky rewardz stuff and the 8 palette don't cut it. and with the bosses and stages being limited, the replay value is basically gone after having cleared all palettes. truly I wish there was more, but the devs probably are super new to all of this and find it hard to get a balance.

The idea that Order is burning memorys is haunting. But there is more than one way to burn a memory. Burning them by removing them whitch is the context here. Burning memory onto disks and "This image is burned into my brain" like branding and, while I doubt it's related, it reminded me of the song that became known with the backrooms: "Just a burning memory" that had themes of dementia. The dual meaning of burn is really sending me throught a loop here tho that could easily be me not knowing Japannesse context very well. They might not have the idea of "Branding" memorys like a scar. Double since the idea prob came from slaves that got branded in that way or the criminals in britan getting branded for their crimes something I don't think Japan ever had. Language is hard and translating is harder so I imagine this is a more literal translation and is more closer to book burning then our idea if burning memorys. Fun qurirk of english I guess. That being said Marina was trying to make this place to help with memory so is "burning" memorys back into sanitised octolings. Tho if these are getting factory burned I wonder if Marina and other octolings are losing memorys from this, From what I remember Splatoon 4 is going to be a soft reboot not having the squid sisters in it at all. So these question likly wont have an answer unless there is a sea scroll about it or something. TL DR: Order/Marina is burning memorys like CD's or giving people dementia. Wack.

Personally, the way I see it is that octolings develop the same way as inklings but there may be an extremely rare chance of cut tentacles also developing into octolings (kinda like a starfish but different). I don't really have any evidence, it's just a headcannon but I guess you could say it's because the ones with more tentacles are smarter but I don't know if that would allow them to become an octoling, or just be a regular octarian with 8 tentacles.

And on the other hand…It’s the manga. Shadow Inklings aren’t canon for example)). As someone who does ship Marina & Pearl, I really like this take! I personally feel like Splatoon is a game with a story you can take some parts of it and fit it to your interpretation. Kinda like Minecraft where the developers leave little hints of story but don't outright confirm anything to let the players make their own stories. (If that makes any sense.) I'm aware Splatoon does have a confirmed storyline and all, but I feel like the developers leave out certain details so we (the players) can make own ideas on how the Splatoon world works. Like with the relationships between the characters, the developers sometimes leave hints but never say it outright so the players can interpret how they like. Some relationships as romantic or platonic and they're both valid to do so! (Granted if they're not being jerks about it..) So with Pearl and Marina's relationship, just like you said, can be viewed as being a couple or just really good friends. (Personally, I think the reason their relationship is never clarified is because of potential censorship, but that's just me.) Sorry if this comment is super long or doesn't make any sense. I barely comment, but when I do, they tend to be very lengthy.. I'm also not really good at putting my thoughts into words so I might've misused some words or repeated myself.

That info on Parallel Canon is interesting to me cause it backs up an idea I had to give 4 a bigger role in my AU’s version of Side Order. Background summary: I’m working off the idea of 4 being left behind in the Canyon. By this time in the plot, the NNSS have realized their mistake and are trying to make up for it, but then Alterna and Side Order happen at about the same time. 4, getting a heads up about the weird things going on in Inkopolis, skips town but doesn’t get out unscathed. Losing both her skills in fighting and a good chunk of her frustrations, to mixed reception. Meanwhile, 8 is climbing the tower, fixing pallets one by one, unaware that something is growing, learning, watching in the background. Until 8 has their own pallet. Once that happens, the figure makes its presence known. It’s a Parallel Canon model with a crop jacket, yellow eyes, and seaweed in its hair. And it holds a grudge. Giving the name Vanish, it airs out a few grievances before challenging the group to a battle and leaving. (Again, in summary) What they find near the top is a version of Girl Power Station, protect the orb for four minutes against three opponents: Vanish, a PC of Cap’n 3 (who looks more like her agent form), and a PC of 8, without Pearl as backup, all while a song in Vanish’s voice drives home how lonely and scared she’s been, and how frustrating it is being left again and again. (That’s all I have so far.)

34:18 i think that octolings are born by being cut from a tentacle, but whether or not they "metamorphose" is either completely up to a genetic "X factor" that happen to give them the ability, OR some external anime-like factor of having to go through extreme moments of motivation (e.g being motivated by hearing Calimari Inkantation/Ebb and Flow). Essentially, I don't think even in-universe characters really understand what qualities they need to have or reach in order to breach the metamorphic state.

hear me out. what if octolings can reproduce both sexually and asexually? sexual reproduction has a similar development to inklings, while asexual reproduction involves the "octarians that metamorphose into octolings" thing. that exists in irl critters, and notably, ocean creatures are some of the most prominent examples! sea anemones, starfish, siphonophores, corals, and even some molluscs are capable of both types of reproduction, with varying levels of preference for one or the other - as seen in an article published by uc santa barbara! the evidence seems to indicate that octarians are the same way.

What I think couldve made more clear is that I believe they can reproduce both ways. sexually= results in octoling with same development as inklings. asexually= the canon tentacle cutting. The point of ambiguity is if that tentacle cutting can somehow develop into an octoling or not, and by extension, if octolings are even made through sexual reproduction in the domes. Real life octopuses and squids reproduce sexually, and the asexual cutting of tentacles is based on how there's a brain-like cluster of neurons in every octopus' limbs, but that developing into its own being is not something that happens irl for octopuses.

You know, I won't be surprised Agent 4 does become a notably powerful character when (or "if", really) referenced in later games. I mean, we're talking about an agent who mastered a variety of weapons to defeat Octavio and save Callie. As a way to give a little disambiguation to each agent for people intentionally left with little and vague character, that wouls seem to be the most logical course to barely define 4. That said, what does it really matter how powerful any of these guys are? Apparently they are all chumps in turf war (I'm in a rut).

For the Octolings and Octarians thing, it could be that some Octarians can become Octolings while some can't and it's either totally random or pre-determined by something(maybe octarians can only form other octarians while octolings can only form other octolings, but then that would imply they're two different species... maybe only octarians/descendants of octarians who came into contact with the crystalized memories from alterna can gain an octoling form? I have no idea)

more than likely it's just to make them stand out. with hair, from the playable octolings, we obviously know they have a variety of hairstyles/colours etc. if they made acht and marina look exactly the same as the others it could make them hard to pick out.. and acht's piercings probably play into them being a 'rebel'. also i imagine they have side-protagonist aesthetic bonuses lol

The real question - If all Octolings we see in combat school are female, how can male octolings exist? Are they just not in the military or in separate classes/schools? Heck, all Octolings we see in-game that are not player characters are guys. Octavio is essentially the only male Octoling in the entire game, not including player characters.

It's possible that, Octavio aside, male Octolings are seen as inferior military assets. Or maybe Octavio is just weird. Society can be about social norms rather than objective facts, after all.

Here’s a theory on octoling / octotarian birth! perhaps octolings are formed from a cut-off tentacle, but, thanks to their humanoid from, they can reproduce, explaining the young octoling from SashiMori! so his parents perhaps would’ve both come from cut-off tentacles, and he came from them, resulting in an inkling-like growth! :D

I would guess that the cut tentacles never become octolings, but the early stages of naturally born octolings are physically similar to the cut tentacle ones, and/or a significant number of octoling babies fail to develop fully and those ones are treated like the cut tentacles.

Textbooks, immersion, and having conversation/drill partners (preferrably native or fluent) are all valid. Also, vocab and reading skills come naturally in time as you immerse yourself, so I highly recommend focusing on particle structure/grammar and ritual language (learning non-literal phrases and language patterns said all the time in society). ^^
