@@dangsam yeah you are right. Goldenaxe 1 feels like conan to me (with the beheading in the japanese intro), but the second arcade game misses the savagery. However check out Rastan Saga Warrior Blade 3, now THAT is conan.

Man this brings back memories. One of my all time favorite arcade games. You could play a long time on one quarter too. I recall making it to level 5 or 6 most of the time, but having a really hard time finishing level 6. I remember taking a lot more damage from the the acid and the poison though. It barely moved your health bar when you encountered these things. Well it was a LONG time ago.

I still remember in my childhood playing this game first at a VHS Rental Store because my late father was renting movies and later my late uncle took the entire family to Las Vegas and played Rastan at Circus Circus great times.

I like the Japanese version better. They flesh out the story more, you hear Rastan's lines and motivations. The US version just has stock dialogue. Just like the PC Engine version of "Double Dragon II: The Revenge" has original computer animation voiced by talented voice actors to flesh out the story (NintendoComplete did a playthrough of it that he also subtitled for those of us who don't know Japanese).

@@mrmusicverse It was said Conan inspired Rastan Saga. With the extra scenes framing the story, it's easy to see why. You actually get to be in Rastan's shoes as you experience his story through gameplay.

AL82 , can you explain all of the power ups and how to use them? The different swords are obvious and the blue life and orange life killer is also obvious but I dont understand the rest of them..

The attract mode explains them. Most of the pickups are either temporary damage reduction or points multipliers. The ram's head (or golden fleece as the game calls it) is a full HP restore. The gems are just points. Not really sure what the staff does even the attract mode just says "?" for the description.

Played this arcade game until I broke the bank in the late 80s. A wonderful game, quite difficult actually, but awesome in many ways. Seen some people complete the game in one token (quarter), but have never seen it done without losing a life. That would be quite the feat.

The greatest treasure in life is a good woman, or so says The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 31, anyway. Also, Rastan should have realized that having that princess along with the treasure not only would have made him a king of her country, but that he could have also added her country to the one that he became a king of, thus giving him more land, as well as people and resources, to rule over in the end because a smart king would have seen the potential of the bigger picture, and bonus points if the princess is beautiful. All good kings need a queen to rule beside them in their lives.

Well, I can say two things for certain about this game. 1. It's so nostalgic and evokes the heroic element we were so enjoying in the 80s... Now everything is grimdark and boring. And men are not allowed to be competent any more. 2. It has some of the most horrific game design I have ever seen. It is obvious that there was little thought put in the design and challenge aspect here. No particular consistency in the universe either(random barbarian women with lizardmen and baby chimeras?!?).

I had the DOS port of this game. Worse graphics and sound than the original, and there were a few places where the enemies would spawn so fast and thick that there was effectively no way to actually get past them.
