Can't really go wrong with any one of these. The CIVIVI has the smoothest action and best handle material, and overall best quality, but the RAT is a real work horse, and the Cutjack is really good as well. Just depends on what you use your knife for, and what is more important to you I guess. I have all 3, although my Cutjack is the mini. The CIVIVI for me and my general use, wins hands down. Not even close.

Great non-partial breakdown. It’s true that each of these is the best choice different people, with some wanting absolute dependability with washers and full liners, while some want a nice bearing flipper, and others want a compromise between the two. Personally, I’m partial to the Cutjack. I like the simplicity and ease of maintenance of washers, while appreciating the weight saving benefits of milled liners. Also, as a lefty, having to reach across the knife to actuate the liner lock, I’ve found flippers that little bit safer than your average thumb stud blade, as the flipper tab will often stop at your thumb before the blade if you’re in a hurry or generally not careful. I also appreciate the cost saving of the FRN Cutjack over the G10 Backlash, and would probably get something like the G10 handled Lanner or Piercer if I have the extra to spend.

Anything like this depends on your priorities. If you want a time-tested workhorse, you get a Rat. If you want an “expensive knife” on the cheap, you get a Civivi. I don’t have the jack so I can’t really comment on it fairly. What I CAN say, however is that Civivi really picked up where Ontario left off and set a new bar. When I got my Odium in (the first Civivi I bought), I was almost in shock at the quality to price ratio...like I was on candid camera or something. It was every bit as nice as some of my more expensive Spydercos, etc. I mean EVERY BIT. You could make the D2 vs S30v/VG10/BD1N argument, sure....but I honestly don’t mind stropping my knives a couple times a week so it’s kind of like “meh”. The ergonomics and sheer usability alone make the Civivis competitive with just about anything on the market under $300.

The only one of these I currently own is the full size Cutjack, and have been very pleased with it, especially for slicing, that blade is superb for slice tasks. Overall it is a knife I would recommend to anyone, even relatively hard use. I've been pretty rough on mine and the only issue I've had is an occasional need to very lightly tighten the pivot as it loosened.

Thank you for the great review, since I cant get a hold on to any of these before purchasing due to living overseas, it will help me a bunch. One small favor to ask, do you have any knive maintenance video especially for D2 steel? Because you've mentioned that they wont be great against corosion and I am planing purchasing an EDC (probably cutjack) for camping with my wife.

I've had a cutjack for 3 years, just got a civivi elementum, and have a rat 2 on the way. If the backlash is anything like the elementum just larger then I would definitely go with that. The cutjack has been a great knife but it just doesn't compare to the quality feel and action of the elementum

I've been regularly using my D2 Cutjack for a couple of years now and can say with great confidence that it is an excellent hard use knife. I beat on it and use it in sandy/dirty conditions regularly and often misuse it, but it cleans-up and sharpens up well. It's never had blade lock-up or sloppiness issues and is a snappy deployer. I'm now thinking about upgrading to the M390 steel just because it will provide better performance than D2 . . . it carries and performs well from both an ergonomic and maintenance perspectives.

Bearings are cool if you use your knife to open up box's but the second you use your knife for real work they get gritty and eventually unusable with blood sand dirt hell anything that gets in those bearings that's why I only use washer knifes and the day serious has amayzing washers so it's gonna get the win from me.

They were letting the Rat-1 in Aus 8 go on Amazon for $15. Decision made. I do like the Civivi. Gorgeous. Nobody hates the RAT and I’m an outdoorsman so it fit the bill.

So it showed up today. A little bigger than I thought it would be. A little lighter than my Buck Folding Hunter with approximately the same blade length. Solid feeling. The only thing that seemed a little cheap are the panels like everyone says. Good ergos. None of the imperfections mentioned in the tube, except the blade seems a tiny bit off center, but you really have to look for it. Well put together and we’ll woth $15 for the AUS-8 blade, which is super sharp.

I'm with the Baklash all the way! Cut paper? What about shave? ... a much better test! It's hard to beat this knife's hollow grind, action and handle... etc. The handle material has numerous options (I like the Ebony Wood, myself) and they even have a Damascus blade option. - I have customized in the neighborhood of 20 of the Baklash for customers (acid etched blade logos, pictures & designs, other custom touches & custom compression sheaths).

i am trying to decide between the rat 1 D2, the kershaw cryo, and the spyderco tenacious
@metal_complex
@metal_complex 5 жыл бұрын
Ive owned and handled all 3. The Cryo is good but not much of a performer. The Tenacious is dependable, and a great slicer, but the blade steel falls short in the shadow of the Rat's D2. IMO, the Rat is the best of those 3.
@megadeth22885
@megadeth22885 5 жыл бұрын
@@metal_complex yeah, i was thinking with the cryo or the tenacious, at some point as an upgrade id get a piece of flat stock and make a new blade out of higher quality metals, perhaps better than D2 even.. bladehq sells a cryo in D2, but not the larger cryo II that i want

gotta call you out at around 1:05 to 1:12. D2 chips. I have D2 in many knives and brands and blade lengths and they all chip. I have 3 S&W black ops knives that are a better steel even if on paper they arent. My 1st I got in 2012 second 2013 and most recent 2018 and they havent seemed to change in quality. Not one chip and all stay shapper 3 times longer than any knife I own. Some kinda china supper steel? 4034 what ever the fuck that is? IDK but they are stronger and sharper and cheaper than D2 not no $70 more like $35 or $40. Noth the best knives knida heavy but best steal I found to edc under $50 maybe even under $100. Magic assist is average but strength and edge retention is 200%
