+Lithiux I have a theory that as graphics get better, people want to make more realistic, gritty, cinematic games. so these types of games aren't as appropriate. so glad that insomniac is still making these though. It certainly is brave, however I would argue there is more to it than that. There are themes of an impending doom as well as chaos. Kyzil Plateau's OST really portrays how hopeless the Galactic Rangers were against the Tyrrhanoid Invasion before Ratchet & Clank showed up. It sounds exactly like an overwhelming invasion overpowering an incompetent resistance, and you're the only reinforcement that's there to support the losing side and change the tide of a hectic battle. Not saying that bravery isn't the theme, it certainly is. However that aspect of bravery is amplified and complimented by the ambience of a losing battle. ''You're Our Last Hope'' kinda vibes. (It's 6:00 AM here, so I may just be thinking unnecessarily analytical gibberish... feels good to write it out though.)

I think they tried to go back to a more 'goofy' sort of theme like the first game, because the art style and sound of the second was getting more 'militarised' and less 'goofy sci-fi', and quite clear in number 3. To be honest though, I do much prefer number 3's aesthetic. You can play the game, and not necessarily feel like you're playing a children's game listening to the music. Shit is going down.

Not at all. Him and Clank were already cute enough to begin with, but they keep updating their designs and overdoing it to the point that they look like children's drawings. They're really doing everything they can to turn the series into what it originally was originally subverting: a cutesy platformer.

@@tomlawrence4350 I was about 7 when the first game came out and one of the big draws to me was the way that it took me seriously. The game didn't belittle me with a minimalist non-story like many of the other platformers at the time. Ratchet was cute, but he wasn't a stuffed animal. In fact, he was a total dick for a while, with poor Clank being his mistreated voice of reason. The first game was my first real exposure to character development in a game. And when Clank walks away at the end with a broken arm... then Ratchet calls out "Hey tinman, where do you think you're going? We still have to fix that arm"... damn. I'm rambling now, so I'll cut to the chase. I loved R&C at a young age because it trusted me with not everything being as cuddly and bubblewrapped as other platformers at the time. Insomniac already got it right the first time. Now they're turning Ratchet into what he originally was the counterpoint to.

Though Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal is one of my favorites not only on the ps2, but probably in the entire franchise, but my only complaint is that I thought the only way into the insomniac museum was to 100% the game when really you can just go to metropolis and find a special teleporter and wait until it is between 2 and 3 am in real time, that kinda made me mad, still my favorite game all around.

Nah, its more of the design and style. For R&C 1-3 and Deadlocked, they wanted to portray Ratchet as sort of the.....cool guy/somewhat badass creature that doesn't like nerds. Something like the 3D Sonic era of Sonic but.....with a bit more grittyness to it? I just couldn't understand why would they ever try to make Ratchet cute and kid-friendly now since the games had always appealed mostly to everyone regardless of age and for those who are more older, they could appreciate the themes done in the first few games. Anyways, sidetracked, for a good comparison, just compare the box arts. I think you can get my gist of what I'm saying with just a glace with the boxart.
