It's kind of ironic how the games made by a company whose goal was to avoid crunch ended up feeling more rushed than the games made by Insomniac.
@mastergee70758 ай бұрын
No crunching means people work on the games for less hours so it kinda makes sense, also I would suppose the studio was much smaller than insomniac But also usually I try to understand devs but I think in this case there really was some clear incompetence, like how do you release a game that's 70% boring ass minigame sections knowing damn well those are the least liked sections in most R&C games? Fun Fact, on the ps2 edition of secret agent clank, your only loading screen is the typical ratchet & clank "flying through space in your ship to your destination" animation. But it goes through 10 extremely slow and painful cycles each time IF your copy is pristine with no issues, instead of this fabled "Captain Quark Thinking" loading screen that I have never even heard of until this video. Which is a bit perplexing when you consider this means that when clank is stranded in space and the gameplay cuts to a quark section, you STILL SEE clank's ship flying through space, even though he's, well, stranded.

between Insomniac's PS2 era games ended with Ratchet: Deadlocked (2005) and the PS3 era games which begun with Tools of Destruction (2007) started, for me, The quality of the Franchise and Ratchet and clank being themself how the original trilogy teached us, it felt like a complete swap out. It all kinda ended when the Future games Saga (PS3 titles of the series) started I always felt like Ratchet & Clank Size Matters was the real 5th game because Ratchet and clank was way more like they used to be in the Original games, also their home was always at the Solana-Galaxy throughout anyway so It immediately connects to these games with that Even though the Concept for Secret Agent Clank was something quite different, I felt it was the perfect 6th game of the series, where it then should ended for the sake of the franchise. Afterwards, the PS3 saga games felt so different from what Ratchet & Clank originally was in terms of their behavior, the Crazy, out of touch new lore, the visual of the characters and the overall storytelling. I think another important thing to point out is, that of course the PSP was a weaker System other then the PS2, so of course the "PSP games" looked like trash graphically other then that, they made everything right with these two games and the Series should ended there. Sorry, but all this crazy lore about the "last of his race guy" meeting "the time keeper robot" by complete coincidence wasn't really doing it for me!

SAC was pure suffering. Also remember more recently playing Size Matters a few years ago for a stream during a Ratchet marathon and trying to 100% that game on emu. Tried to make it through Inside Clank to do the wrench only skill point, only to actually do it and... not get it long into the playthrough in one stream. Never again lmao. I will say the one thing I'll say about the armor system is that I got around Otto's absolute garbage fight using the firebomb set (the Mega bomb set with wildfire gloves) to deal damage to his shield to save ammo, and it did decent enough damage? Still a miserable experience though.

@garfieif81878 ай бұрын
It seems like a forced meme, honestly. Size Matters was mindblowing on release, and Secret Agent Clank was a fun little spinoff. I noticed a lot of Nostalgia Critic-esque "angry reviewers" have been tearing into these handheld games for not being up to par with the ps3 titles, and people are taking those reviews completely at face value. Maybe it's newer fans who only played the series after it started taking itself way too seriously. They're flawed, sure, but none of the flaws are pervasive enough to destroy the games on fundamental levels. Secret Agent Clank probably has it worst with overly long gadgebot sections, but that's not what people complain about there. They only complain about the absurdity of Clank playing a secret agent character. I guess they don't realize that Secret Agent Clank was actually a thing from UYA? With Size Matters most of the complaints are about the ps2 port not looking as good as the other ps2 games, which is... yeah, an astute observation. The 2007 handheld game does, in fact, look inferior to the console games.

However, and especially regarding the "no really this game is bad go play it again" comment... I can't agree. I'm still able to enjoy a playthrough. The one funny detail about this game that always stuck out to me thats exclusive to a non english version is the fact that in the qwark opera house they had the italian voice of DOCTOR NEFARIOUS dub over the singing part of Qwark because i guess the voice actor didn't feel like he had the chops to make it work... and to contextualize this, the thugs4less leader was voiced by that same voice actor in italy but here he's instead voiced by somebody else doing an impression of the english voice actor... and no he didn't do other voices he was just there for that one opera bit then dipped

"It's a portable game so we need to give it slack!" Daxter, Peace Walker, Birth by Sleep, Crisis Core, Ghost of Sparta and Vice City Stories were better than most of their franchises main games.

I have such fun memories of playing ratchet and clank size matters from back in the day on my PSP being the only ratchet and clank game I owned because I never had a PlayStation two at the time and I know if I go back and play it now I’ll have questions for my younger self

For nostalgic reasons, I love so much this game, so many memories, love it's chill vibe, perfect for PSP. Also loved the online features, there was a bug back then if you play with 2 people a deathmatch and press some button (circle I guess) at the last second you can change your team, so with my best friend we put deathmatches free for all and at the last second we changed it 2 vs 1 it was hilarious.

Interesting thing about the terrible difficulty balance in Size Matters: while playing it to achieve 100% years ago, when I was just a kid, I noticed that after many and many failure in defeating Otto in the very last NG+ showdown you suddenly begin to deal off-scale damage and easily win the bossfight. And this "thing" happened in every following NG+ run. At the time I tought it was a sort of a glitch but, after many years, I'm seriously considering it happened due (at least on PSP, never played it on PS2) to a sort of auto-balancing feature, similar to the one Insomniac implemented in the OG series (with increased damage and bonus health/ammo crates) but never finished and kinda broken.

Crazy coincidence that some members of High Impact Games went onto work for Heart Machine. Hyper Light Drifter is one of my favorite games outside of the Ratchet and Clank series and this was the last place I was expecting to find a connection.
