Grahame Booth Watercolour

8 жыл бұрын

One of the resources for watercolour painters at www.grahamebooth.com. A watercolour demo of Rathlin Island off the coast of Northern Ireland using a limited palette of 6 colours is used based on the traditional and modern idea of primary colours. It is painted on Bockingford 200lb NOT paper from St. Cuthbert's Mill. There are English subtitles that can be auto translated into many other languages.

Absolutely loved your demo! And as always, I learn so much. Where there is light, you must have a dark. Don't hesitate to soften with your finger. The sheer simplicity from your first wash to the addition of your final darks keep me mesmerized. Thank you for your generosity and your patient teaching!

I love the way you put the color on the paper, it seems to be perfectly imperfect. At the first time, it seems that everything goes wrong and suddenly it becomes clear and very nice. Thank you for the amazing class. Regards from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Very nice painting. I gave it a go and am also pleased with my results but like your values and looseness a lot more. I'll look for more because I love boats and seascapes. I worked for for John Brown. Although I have been to Teeside, I worked in the US and once in Portsmouth but I have often thought I'd like to paint a scene from Teeside. Unfortunately, I haven't found a suitable photo and wonder if you've ever painted anything from the Shipyards or nearby?

A couple of questions: what paper are you using and am I right in thinking you didn't wet the paper first, just used a very thin wash? Thanks.
@PaintingWatercolour
@PaintingWatercolour 5 жыл бұрын
I used Bockingford from St. Cuthbert's Mill in England for this one and you are correct - I don't pre-wet the paper. Pre-wetting dilutes those early washes and there is very little control. Using more of a wet against wet method allows at least some control but with that first wash I really don't mind what happens as long as there are no dry edges.
@marigoldwood8494
@marigoldwood8494 5 жыл бұрын
@@PaintingWatercolour Many thanks for explaining that. I am just starting out and have been following the instructions about wetting the paper and then putting on the first wash and the results have been a bit hit and miss, to say the least! So I was really interested to see your video and the method you use. Definitely going to give it a try. Thanks again.

@@PaintingWatercolour thanks Graham ! Yes I tend to lean towards those excellent 'expensive" paints myself. I usually order them from CassArt in London and have them shipped free to my brother in Lanarkshire, Scotland and he brings them over to me in Ontario when he visits me. I am presently looking at the German Schmincke Horadam pan set. Apparently they have a fantastic reputation. Winsor & Newton on steroids! is an often repeated description. I tend to paint different subjects like Architectural - landscape - wild life - people - abstract - political statements - comic relief. I do as much pencil, carbon powder and charcoal work as watercolor items. Perhaps I am one of those wrestles folks who gets tired of the same old same old. Power to you sir from an old Scotsman now residing in Canada !
@scarz1951
@scarz1951 3 жыл бұрын
Grahame, some artists say that the "ghost wash" is "painting the light". Since most, if not all of it gets covered up, other than covering up the white of the paper and laying a foundation for what comes next...how is it painting the light? I've heard people use the term with an almost reverent tone in their voice.
@PaintingWatercolour
@PaintingWatercolour 3 жыл бұрын
Good question but the reason that it is painting the light is because not all of it gets covered up. I would say that in an average painting only around 50% gets covered which led me to my 50% rule: Don't cover more that 50% of a previous wash with a new wash. That way you are always leaving light as you go through the painting. The 50% is not a hard and fast amount - it's just that if you don't keep that idea in your head, it is so easy to just paint over everything.
@scarz1951
@scarz1951 3 жыл бұрын
@@PaintingWatercolour I see. Its Not ambient light they are concerned with. Its the point you were making when you say that if you lose the light it's gone. Sometimes the only difference between me and a box of rocks is the box. Thank you for explaining.
