I often remind Farangs, particularly those from English speaking countries, on how to pronounce Chiang Mai correctly. Basically just practise it alongside Liam. If they can say Liam without sounding like Lam, then they know how to accentuate the "ia" vowel in Chiang. Repeat Liam Chiang Liam Chiang 10 times and it will get into your system 😉 Not sure how it became Chang though, but the important thing is that they are willing to correct themselves.
@triarb57903 жыл бұрын
Thankyou. Practising right now! I always assumed it was 'ia' but let myself get dragged into Aussie pronunciation!

Someone even literally says ช้างไม้ instead of เชียงใหม่. May be they thought the province name has something to do with the wooden carved elephant souvenir.

@@kittenastrophy5951 could be. And the Chang beer is well advertised which might've put that phonology in their mouths when they see Chiang/Chang 😅

The last phrase Tang Mo said (btw his Thai was PERFECT), as you mentioned, is kind of difficult to translate to English. I think the literal translation would be "please let me put myself under your mercy (or care)" IMHO, it is used mostly in two different contexts. One is in a general conversation when you meet someone for the first time and wish for them to be generous with you in the future or keep you in their mind when something good comes along (mostly jobs). Another context is when entertainers would say this upon meeting fans or while on TV, and this would mean "please keep me in your mind and follow/buy my work". Thai is such an interesting language and very, very context dependent. The scripts are not quite as complex but we make it up by making everything else extremely complicated. I think one could only be successful learning Thai when they have exceptional sense of place (where you are, who you are talking to, what you are trying to achieve from the conversation, etc) and have great ears for all the insane tones. The tonality is just hard coded into our heads and when someone makes a mistake it just sticks out like a sore thumb, but we are (mostly) nice and will be happy correct you. I think I can speak for most Thai people that we really admire anyone who even attempts to learn our language and we are usually enthusiastic about helping someone perfect their Thai. We know how ridiculously hard it is. I had 14 years of formal Thai classes at school and still struggle occasionally, especially now that I've lived in the US for so long without anyone to speak Thai to.

Hey Paddy, great video! I really enjoyed watching this video like all your other videos. Thank you! I love thai language and I'm trying to learn it. I think my Thai level is just A1, because I'm a beginner. I baught a book for A1 and a CD and began to learn. I have already practiced a lot, so I think I'm not bad at speaking and pronouncing, so maybe it sounds like I have a better level than A1. And last but not least I am watching your chanel and listen to you speaking thai while reading english subtitles, which is awesome and very helpfull! But though I'm not good at listening and understanding if a thai person speaks, because I feel like they talk very fast and they use words which I don't know. Today I called a Thai restaurant (I live in Germany) to reserve a table for next friday and I think the waitress understood me very well because she answered in thai and asked me another question which I did'nt understand. So I stopped and had to think and asked her to repeat and she did, but I did'nt understand yet. So I decided to ask in german. Then she hung up the phone. I guess she thought that I wanted to kidding her, because I spoke thai not bad, but then didn't understand her. On the one hand I'm not feeling well at the moment because of this situation, on the other hand I had to laugh about myself. I just wanted to train and practice my thai. In my area there aren't any language schools who offer thai courses, so I have to practice on my own. Do you have any other tipps for me how I can learn to understand thai people better? Greetings from Germany! :-)
I love all these episodes. I hope you keep doing for more updates. I think you will gain a lot of subscribers around the world , who are interested in learning to speak Thai. Great job,

This gave me a new video idea when I saw your face light up listening to the Nepali guy - mine did too. How about in a voxpop in Thai Town asking people what different accents of L2 Thai speakers sound like to them. Do some sound cute or cool or ugly or anything? Maybe all foreign accents just sound the same to a typical Thai ear? Would be interesting to find out.

Yeah, Paddy emphasizes the tone so much. It's the same for English, we don't really pronounce all the letters, but English teachers always over pronounce.
