I suffered with an aesthetically pleasing sketchbook for years. I refused to make mistakes, I felt like it was my portfolio. It felt so good when I took a page and just doodled all over it and tested colors. It was like I was breaking free. 😌

Marco Bucci is THE GOAT. I've watched all of his videos on light and shadow, and his video about hands caused me to go from drawing very mid to bad hands to drawing great ones. Just by following the video as it was going and doing some of the exercises he told me to do while watching I literally got so much better at drawing hands immediately after watching it. Literally got great in a day.

As a fourteen year old artist, i suffer with art. I started my channel to have people tell me how to be better. Now i just post for fun because that's what art should be. It shouldn't ever be considered bad every piece i make i hate, and that's fine because i had fun making it. Now i want to get better at art because it's something i like and enjoy. It's a hobby. I've never dripped and never will. People in my family who stopped drawing because of work and stuff were really good. They stopped art, and they art is stunted. Anyone can draw. it's just the fact that you have to be willing to sit down and pick up a pencil. Art is bad, but when you try to be better, it is amazing. ❤

I had a fundamentals book when I was a kid that used the grid drawing method as a way to get you out of drawing symbols and teach you to draw what you actually see. It’s a good practice tool if you use it correctly. The book would have you draw the grid, and flip the image upside down, and you could start drawing in any square but the important thing was to draw what you saw in that square, not what you imagine the thing to look like, what you actually saw.

With regard to the eye thing, i think you forget that traditional artists don't necessarily get the position perfect first time. That means erasing a perfect eye to redraw it from scratch. Which can get annoying.

I applied to Humber, OCAD (2 seperate times, 5 years apart), Sheridan, Seneca, and others for art. The first time I didn't get in, but was invited to a prep course at Humber. Long story short, I had to drop out, but years later I wanted to apply to OCAD for their fibre arts program. The biggest difference between my portfolio later vs the first round was two things: 1. Obviously I had improved. But 2. I brought art I wasn't as proud of. I brought my laptop to do a slideshow of my digital work, and my sketchbook in all it's good and bad art glory. Because I was applying to fibre arts, I also made an outfit to wear to my portfolio interview, and brought a few acessories I had sewn, knit, and crocheted. So I can confidently say, they want to see both proof of improvement (which is why they want to see a sketchbook, so if you draw a lot, maybe bring two. Your most recent, and one you're very proud of. Just make sure your most recent has some better art in it too, but it probably will if you draw enough to need two ;P I mentioned the schools because I know you're Torontonian like me, and you would have heard of them, if not gone to one ^-^. Sadly I didn't get to go to OCAD, BUT I did get in!

13:30 reminds me of my time when I was signing up for high school (I'm a special needs kid, so before high school we have to take a series of simple assignments, like for example, pointing out an object different from the others), I had to re-draw an entire drawing already made on a grid, IN a new grid, and I still didn't finish it in the 20 minutes I had (For context, it wasn't even that hard of a drawing, just lines, dots and stars)!

For the tip at 17:42 I would recommend this in a couple situations. If youre doing a quick sketch and want it to look pretty, this can be a nice way to do it if you arent feeling a full piece. The other way to use something like this is as a way to finish off a piece. Do your sketch, lineart, color and rendering as usual. Dont skimp on the rendering! This tip wont save you from shadows! Once you're done, you can use this to darken or lighten areas you want to add more emphasis to. It adds a lot of juice for very little effort and you can combine it in a million ways with as many colors and shapes as you want. I really love doing my lineart on a separate layer, adding a clipping mask to make it a lighter color and then using a gradient with multiply to add some simple color to it.

If you’re worried about inking on the sketch layer, make another layer above it, set it to screen, then fill it with blue. Set another layer above the screen layer and that’s your inking/lineart layer. This way, if you’re accidentally on the sketch layer, it shows up as blue instead of black, so you know right away that it’s wrong. Hope this helps.
