The thing with boxes, and I'm sure Sam knows this, is that they are not to draw anatomy, they are to draw the structure. When you add the anatomy on top, it dosn't needs to match the box, the box is there because it is much easier and more precise to understand the planes of a box than of a circle and that makes it easier to find the perspective. But boxes are used to draw people all the time. The mistake is to think that the shape of the box corresponds to the anatomy. It's like a low poly skeleton.
@bradleysharp5028Ай бұрын
Boxes help beginners learn the angles of the structures. Eventually, it's good to move on to more accurate shapes, though.
@Nic0Dr4wsАй бұрын
Agreed, sometimes if I’m having trouble visualizing how a face will look in a certain perspective then I draw a box to understand where the planes are and the base the sketch of the head off of that

Thanks for the clarification! As a beginner, I got confused about why Sam explained that using a box is bad, when it helped me a lot to know where the face/body is facing, especially at head angles. I'm still a little confused, but I guess I need to figure it out on my own.😅

About the Loomis method: something that I always noticed is that people seem to not read what Loomis wrote in his books and only copied the head examples and though that is how you are supposed to do every head ever. In his book "Fun With a Pencil" you can see how it can be used for caricature.

There are so many artists in the world it's amazing. There are so many artists in the world who shouldn't be making tutorials... reminds me when I was younger and tried to make tutorials despite being bad and not understanding shit. Super cringe. Even now when people ask me to make tutorials I just tell them "there are already a lot of people making tutorials who are way better than me, I learned from them and you should too". I don't even think those people are making tutorials to teach, they're making them to get views. Noobs won't make the difference between a bad and good tutorial.

I specifically saw a youtube tutorial of "use box for head not ball" The point of that tutorial was simply talking about how it's hard to get things on the side of your head (mostly ears) in the right place when you use other constructions (like a ball). When the head is looking up or down, the height on the canvas of the ear compared to the eye line changes, and drawing a mid-line around a box can help you realize where it should be. When you draw your line around a ball, it's kind of difficult to angle that line correctly for perspective. I played around with it for a while, and it did help me a bit when drawing heads at odd angles, but I don't use it most of the time.

To be honest, there is no problem with the boxes. Renaissance masters were using boxes, but the thing is that, for a beginner who doesn’t know anatomy, they shouldn’t use boxes. But for a more advanced artist, if you know how to use them, boxes can be very useful.
@lonestarr1490Ай бұрын
I disagree. Everyone can use boxes, regardless of their level. They just have to know what to use them for. Boxes are for everything perspective related. When it comes to the face it's about placement of the symmetric features in perspective, in 3/4 view for instance. Or spacing the thirds correctly when the face is seen from above or below. That's what you use the box for: only perspective, nothing anatomy related.
@Rain-nm1eeАй бұрын
@@lonestarr1490yep. I’ve never gotten sams dislike for them. If you can rotate cubes perfectly in perspective then all you need next is form and u can draw almost anything from reference in any position. Then all you need is the other fundamentals and ur on ur well on your way draw anything from imagination. He also only ever shows poorly drawn cube to faces. Someone like kuzomari nailed the cube method and now all his drawings have absurdly good perspective.
@Randomgachatuber-z3gАй бұрын
@@Rain-nm1eepersonally boxes have always sucked for me, I know they’re ment for placement but it just screws me up, it got to a point where I just stopped using guidelines, more simplified things help me more, maybe that’s just how my brain works but I can’t stand boxes
@Rain-nm1eeАй бұрын
@@Randomgachatuber-z3g yeah that’s valid. Everyone’s gotta find their own way. Personally I use a cube/3D rectangle for the torso and pelvis and the rest is pretty much all cylinders. (For the undersketch)

@Aer0AlexАй бұрын
I used to be against boxes too, but I've found they can be useful - when used correctly. I picked up George Bridgeman's Constructive Anatomy book as it was recommended by many other artists. In the section on The Head, he says: "For so long a time has the oval been used as the basis for the construction of the human head and face that the use of the block or cube seems quite evolutionary. Yet for many reasons the cube seems preferable. The oval is too indefinite, and offers no points for comparison, no basis for measurement. The eye does not fix on any point in a curved line. On the ground plane of a square, however, any form may be built. The block moreover carries with it from any angle its perspective and its foreshortening, and it carries with itself the sense of mass." That being said, the other points brought up here are also valid. Learn the rules before you break them. Fully understand the techniques before employing them. Then you can start exploring the space to understand and stretch the limits of your style and preferences.

The boxes beef is so funny lmaoooo, true for beginners though! I think they're useful for informing perspective, lighting and volume so long as you keep in mind they're not organic shapes! And if you modify the box (i.e. make some of the faces trapezoid, use cylinders in places) then they can be really good for constructing poses etc, but to be able to draw well with them, you already need decent anatomy knowledge because they're not a good guideline for anatomy, which is where a lot of these tutorials incorporating them go wrong

UM, JUST A DISCLAIMER ABOUT THE OIL PAINT. Yes, it's okay to smell in general. The scent is not lethal, as far as I understand. (But as someone who has worked with it, you might get a headache if you're sensitive to the smell because it can be pretty strong.) But please, PLEASE do not eat it, and if you ever for some reason decide to do a sanding process that involves oil paint, do NOT inhale the dust particles. Wear a mask. One of my favorite art professors here at university told me how they had a fellow coworker and friend actually die because he regularly made oil paint-related projects involving an electric sander and did not wear a mask. He explained to us that over time, because of the exposure, his body deteriorated and he became increasingly ill to the point where he ended up in a wheelchair up until the day he suddenly passed away. They found out only afterwards that it was because of the exposure to the toxic oil paint dust. Anyway, please exercise caution, and stay safe. It's true that they use synthetics now to make the colors, but that doesn't make them any less toxic to ingest. This person is probably talking about how they no longer use materials like asbestos for making oil paints. This may be true, but it's important to keep in mind that while painting, the oil paint has to be dissolved using a jar of paint thinner rather than a cup of water--which is VERY toxic and should NOT be inhaled for extended periods or consumed. (This is because the oil makes the paint somewhat hydrophobic.)

I might be in the wrong here, so genuinely, please correct me if I'm saying anything incorrect. I have painted with oil paints for a while and it is true that oil paint itself does not really smell, unless you keep it in the same, small place for a long time (like on a drying painting). However, the solvents are a different thing. While there are many on the market that do not smell, they are nevertheless harmful to inhale. It's not for nothing that they have multiple warning signs on them. I tried multiple ones, but eventually, I had to quit oil painting for the sole reason that my respriatory tract was not liking it and had me coughing for days after every painting session.
