These videos are from 2015, but they have been so helpful to me this quarter in College Algebra. I have not done this level of math in over 20 years. So I thank you so much for taking the time to online tutor!!

Fort Bend Tutoring you should consider making a video whereby you introduce yourself and do a little explanation on why you enjoy maths and teaching it. I think this will ultimately motivate people to become likeminded

Can asymptotes be horizontal as well as vertical and diagonal? Is it possible for the lines to cross over eachother? Is the graph where you have a single dashed line and you have to either shade to the left or the right also a asymptote graph?
@FortBendTutoring7 жыл бұрын
+Cheynal-Seymone Reid Yes, you can have horizontal and several vertical asymptotes at the same time. However, a graph will have either a slant or horizontal asymptote. Never both. The linear inequalities are not the same as asymptotes even though they both can be drawn with dashed lines.
@cheynal-seymonereid54107 жыл бұрын
Why can't you have both? I saw the shading on a graph and the dashed line was vertical and the left side of the graph was shaded. What kind of graph is that if it isn't an asymptote?
@FortBendTutoring7 жыл бұрын
+Cheynal-Seymone Reid It's a linear inequality. Sometimes we use dashed lines with inequalities, not always. Sometimes the lines are solid. We always use dashed lines with asymptotes as the graph approaches the asymptotes but don't touch it (in most cases).
@cheynal-seymonereid54107 жыл бұрын
Ooh okay. What do you mean by "in most cases"? What cases would those be? Would it be with the vertical and slant were it had to go through the "x" or "y" axis?
@FortBendTutoring7 жыл бұрын
+Cheynal-Seymone Reid Sometimes the graph can touch a horizontal asymptote. It's rare, but it can happen.

In my class, to find the asymptote first, I have to add an "h" to all "x" in the function, then I add the original equation but with inverted symbols. And, finally, I have to divide everything by "h". After solving everything, all "h" are substituted by 0..... What kind of method is my class using?? This is so much simple! Anyways, can you explain the method I just referred to, please? I can't use the method you are using in my exam because it is "not the one I've been taught" :( .
@FortBendTutoring9 жыл бұрын
What you're describing is the difference quotient and it's used to find the equation of the tangent line. It's not used to find the asymptote. These are two different concepts.
@bobomee9 жыл бұрын
For # 4 why wouldn't the Vertical Asym be x=0 and x=-1? Because even if we simply don't we still have to use the original function to determine the VA?
@FortBendTutoring9 жыл бұрын
You're confusing the process of finding the domain with finding vertical asymptotes. They are not the same. Because you have a hole at x = 0, you will not have a vertical asymptote there. For any value of x excluded from the domain, it will either be a hole or a vertical asymptote. It won't be both. kzbin.info/www/bejne/faKZl4CheamkmqM
@dainerra9 жыл бұрын
what if i simplified it to ( x-4 ) ( x+2) my graph would be a reflection of yours with 4 an -2 does that matter
@dainerra9 жыл бұрын
in the problem 2x / x^2-2x-8
@FortBendTutoring9 жыл бұрын
Yes it matters because your factorization is incorrect and not equivalent to the original denominator. You may verify this by multiplying (x - 4)(x + 2).
@FortBendTutoring9 жыл бұрын
We know. Your denominator is different from the one in the video. Problem 7 is f(x) = 2x / x^2 + 2x - 8.
@dainerra9 жыл бұрын
That's my bad, yea i just wrote it down wrong from your problem.
