Rational, Irrational and Real Numbers

At some point you are going to learn to classify and sort numbers as 'rational', 'irrational' and 'real'.
The traditional math definition can be a bit of a stumbling block, so I take you through what it means here in this vid, along with examples so it sticks. And the great news is that you'll totally be able to manage this stuff! At the end of the vid you'll find a handy little T-chart (perfect for your math notebook) which will be a 10 second revision tool in time for exams.

It is SUCH a pleasure to help! I was reflecting on this yesterday after I uploaded. This whole thing of classifying them. I don't really see a point in that except for maybe an exam mark or two (and I'm definitely in favour of an easy grab on that!), but I suspect the reasoning behind learning this is in order to make negative fractions something that we can accept. If you can accept negative whole numbers (like negative temperatures), then you must be able to accept negative fractions. I will be honest and say I think the formal definition is made by/for mathematicians (ie kind of dense and semi-impentrable for the rest of us). I think my interpreted definition will prove a lot more accessible to people. And the idea of being able to precisely put your number on the numberline is something we can all get behind.

Good work. how can I am sure I have reached to an irrational number because people do not posses super computers helping them to calculate trillions of decimal places? I will always be in confusion between terminating or non-terminating. Example in the case of PI they have calculated trillions of decimal places and based on the trillion of decimal places they claim that we have reached on an irrational number.

Pi is irrational because there is no pattern of digits. That’s your key. If there’s a repeating pattern, or it’s terminating (like 1/2 = 0.5) then it’s rational. 😃🤗

Is elenty twelve an imaginary number, I think it was in lord of the rings. I'm learning French I don't know if there imaginary or not but around 70 and 80 thet get wired. 20 x 2 + (1-10) you see what I'm talking about if you watch one of those tutorials

Bilbo was ‘eleventy-one’ (111), as I recall, at his grand birthday party at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring. That’s a fantastical number, created to appeal to kids. Tolkien wrote his stories with his son Christopher firmly in his mind. You have to admit, ‘eleventy-one’ totally makes sense to a very young kid. Maybe it was something JRR Tolkien heard his son say when he was very small and perhaps he filed it away in his brain (parents remember cute/funny things their little kids say forever), and put it into his story. I like that idea. As for French numbers, yes… there is a system. It’s logical, but the reason behind 4 20s, 17 for 97 escapes my reasoning. Real numbers are numbers that can be found on the number line like 1,2,3 and -1,-2,-3 it can be positive or negative An irrational number is a number that can be expressed as the ratio a - b a and b are integers and b is not zero basically a can be a real number like 8,-8 etc the same with b but b can never be a 0 Tbh I cant explain wth a rational number bc idek
