Open Talk with Steven Pinker, Johnstone Family Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard, one of the Time's 100 most influential people and Foreign Policy's 100 top public intellectuals!
The public intellectual is known for the idea that language is an instinct and a biological adaptation rather than a product of the intellect. In his book Language Instinct (1994), he points out that the ability of humans to speak to each other is an adaptation through natural selection, not a byproduct of evolution. He also supports the idea of a complex human nature consisting of a vast number of adaptive capacities of the mind. Pinker is the author of the books How the Mind Works (1997), The Blank Slate (2002), and The Better Angels of Our Nature (2011), for which he received numerous awards.
Pinker is an experimental psychologist who conducts research on visual cognition, psycholinguistics, and social relations. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, Humanist of the Year (American Humanist Association, 2006), recipient of nine honorary doctorates. Steven Pinker has served as the chair of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary. He writes frequently for the New York Times, the Guardian, and other publications. His twelfth book, published in 2021, is called Rationality: What It Is, Why It Seems Scarce, Why It Matters.
