I think it has to do with their ageless nature and how much they can endure when compared to humans. Lenore said at one point that humans discover and forget some of the things vampires still use and think it magic when they see it again. You can shoot a vampire in the head and unless it was silver, all it'll do is annoy them. As far as we see in the series, vampires don't get sick, they barely age if at all, they heal almost instantaneously, and several either learn magic or have supernatural powers unique to themselves. If vampires as a whole, at least with the exception of Dracula and Alucard, were turned instead of born, then they might have lived so long that they can't help but see themselves as above everything that once made them human. Also, remove the fear that comes with knowing you are mortal, and you remove a lot of the reason many people are as moral as they are. Fear of reprisal for your actions, fear of punishment in the afterlife; short of a Belmont, the stuff that actually hurts them, or pissing off a stronger vampire, most of them don't have to fear anything anymore. I imagine either of the arguments make for a pretty significant power high; one that doesn't really end until reality bitch slaps them.

Ratko does make an interesting point. Not about him being the real deal, he’s not even compared to the likes of Isaac and Hector. But he does make a valid point on the reality of war and how even though nations tend to glorify it, the sad truth not everyone on the battlefield is a hero doing what’s right, and the people who get killed are not only the enemy soldiers. There’s no such thing as a fair war, and if people wish to wage one they’re going to have to take the bad elements of war with the good. And in the show Castlevania it’s often what makes the villains in this show so bad, that people like Carmilla, Varney, and Dracula are all willing to start these grand epic wars and kill millions of innocent people all while they keep to themselves in their castles. It’s only when the heroes show up and give these villains a reality check that they actually have to do something
@couragew62602 жыл бұрын
And to top it all off, those wars are started by lunatics with differing motives. Dracula was suicidal but wanted to take the rest of the world with him out of grief. Like Alucard said, “this war has just been history’s longest suicide note.” Carmilla was psychotically ambitious to point of denial. Her plans to take over the world were too massive for her even with Hector’s night creatures, and it was her spreading out her forces that helped Isaac’s surprise conquest be that much easier to achieve. Varney/Death has no actual strategic plans outside of “revive Dracula and cause world wide genocide.” If he actually succeeded, then at some point, humanity would become extinct, which is the ONLY food source for Death. He would eventually starve

Varney's retort is perfect. He completely shut down Ratko without having to go into an overly pretentious speech, and Ratko was lost for words afterwards.
@LTDoge-dm3jr5 ай бұрын
When you realize why Varney doesn't like Ratko's definition of war. It is because in Ratko's version, it is killing as many of he opposite side as efficient as possible. Poisoning wells, slitting throats at night. It is about victory at any cost. Varney on the otherhand wants total annihilation. War to him is when two armies meet at the battlefield. Because this way, there are more deaths. On both sides. Ratko's version will win him the war with as much of his side alive. Varney's war is when both sides have equal opportunities to meet death. One of them may win, it matters not, but both will inevtiably have more deaths.

You know, one of the many things that makes this show so great is that every character, no matter how minor in the grand scheme of things, has something interesting to say. Ratko is not that important plot-wise-he was introduced to the show very late and doesn’t have that much screen time-but the writers took the time to still make him a memorable, unique, interesting character (paired with a great performance from Titus Welliver). And THAT is what separates good storytelling from great storytelling.

I know that in hindsight, Ratko is making a fool of himself, since we now know who Varney REALLY IS, but still, you can feel that Ratko is an experienced vampire soldier, and not a boot licker, like how Varney pretended to be. Varney plays as someone who would suck up to whoever is in power for things to be done for him...Ratko would just solve his own problems by his own hands.

If everyone could stop wanking off over who Varney is for a second... A nice touch in Ratko's character is how sophisticated his control of English is while still maintaining his original Central European accent. This is exactly what I would expect a 300+ year old vampire to sound like who has mastered multiple languages across the continent, but not bothered to put any effort into local dialects (because they change so quickly for him)

My view is that he is different vampire with different set of powers and weaknesses. His feeding on life makes him similar to Chinese jiangshi while his origin might make him one of Lemures, vagrant, unsatiated and potentially vengeful spirits Romans placated with food offerings. He definitely is not vampire like Ratko understands.

Ratko believes in his arrogance and narcissism that he is the main character, that he is a true winner of war. He's not. He's a depraved and psychotic animal, one of millions on Earth. There's no reason, no logic, no endgame. He's the best kind of soldier and the worst kind of soldier. The one that you want if you are committing genocide. The one that will rape, murder, torture, cannibalize, and thieve just for the fun of it, because its all just a game to be won. But not the one which can sign a peace declaration or build up a post war society or grow bonds of loyalty to win hearts and minds. He's the rabid dog you let loose during your war then put down or bring back home and have it wreak havoc, more trouble than if it were just put down right away. He is a monster because he believes that is what vampires are "meant" to be. A slave to destiny and predisposition of his own volition while proclaiming himself free and the embodiment of the best humanity and vampires can produce. Isaac and Alucard proved such childish notions and excuses wrong throughout the series. It is a choice to be a monster, one is never forced to be such. Its why Dracula killed himself in the end, realizing he had become a monster of his own volition and used grief as a justification for senseless violence, all culminating in being so lost that he was intent on murdering his own child: the embodiment of all that Lisa had done to better the world.

Varney has heard Ratko's rant many times before and he wasn't impressed by it then either. Ratko doesn't seem very old so he is just a sociopath feeding his power fantasies. Most likely sired by Godbrand (viking vampire of earlier seasons) to work as his lieutenant and enforcer.

Ratko has no clue how out of his depth he is. Every one of his feats are things Varney knows better than him, especially of hunger and ruthlessness pursuing satisfaction. Notice how Varney looks unmoved by his attempt at intimidation, not stepping back even once, at best being surprised for a second at the sheer gall of this small vampire. Ratko walks away feeling like he outsmarted a poser, only to remain clueless and earn the contempt of a stronger being, losing the battle of wits. His second loss was to Trevor, which means ultimately he became nourishment for Varney's hunger.
@DeathMessenger1988 Жыл бұрын
Of course Death is unmoved. Why would he react? Ratko getting so upset he started ranting means his acting and disguise were 100% effective. He IS playing the part of a poser and doesn't want anyone to know what he truly is, after all.

You know Varney's blase attitude towards Ratko makes alot more sense in retrospect. To quote another representation of death "Think how you'd feel if a bacterium sat at your table and started to get snarky. "
