I have gone through many Calathea deaths over the years but my Rattlesnake, Sid, is happy no matter what I do or don't do for him. He always forgives me. I have no clue why. Of course, I'm always telling him how loved he is and how handsome.. lol He is one plant I would deeply mourn if he died. Weird I know. Thanks for the video.

Lol honestly I am right there with you, my rattlesnake lives in a dark little corner of my bedroom and over the years I have forgotten so many watering's but he is always jsut happy doing his thing. I love plants like this! 😍🌿

@@LeafMeAlonePlants Iol I did the opposite. I confess a senior moment and my mind was elsewhere when I over watered him one day. Several days later I started smelling something awful and realized it was him! He had root rot. It smelled like cat pee to me. I was blaming the cat. I repotted him, prayed and apologized and he never skipped a beat.

This rattlesnake calathea must have been blessed with some exceptionally strong genes. I have seen lots of the same plant dying with conditions that were even considered better than what she is giving it. Amazing 🤣

I've kept mine alive for two years without even knowing what it was called (I got it from my grandpa's funeral). I've basically given it the same care as the peace lily next to it, yet it has somehow thrived.

Have one of these in my crested gecko terrarium and it's grown like crazy...bright direct sunlight 12 hours a day and a heaving misting/bottle spray in the tank twice a day and it's spreading like crazy

Hey Keira, great question! So the pot that I have my personal one actually doesnt have a drainage hole (strangely enough on my part)so I top water it. With that said normally any calathea I get into my shop I always bottom water them really you can do either its just preference with these guys!

Your plant looks so happy. And I love this plant sooo much so I bought it on the internet and since I got it ( I have it like 3-4 days now ) the leaves are all looking down like absolutely bent down and they don’t rise up. What can cause it? Do you have any advise on that? Thank you

I water mine about once a week. With that said the best way to know when it needs water is if you start t see the leaves curl al little bit (although of course if you catch it right before then when the soil dries thats better)

I think when I got mine it was maybe over watered.. It was about a month ago yet the moisture meter is still reading 6 (very moist) I probably don’t want to give him water till it gets to about 4 right? Also it’s in my bathroom which average humidity 57-75%

I dont use a moisture meter (although I should lol ) If 4 is like "moderate" than I would say that would be a good time for a little drink you might even get away with a little longer. It sounds like maybe its in a plastic or ceramic pot? These can tolerate a pretty moist soil so you should be fine, but if youre feeling froggy and want to transplant it a terracotta might let the soul dry faster!

So I wish I could put a picture but I will do my best to explain, when they first come up they look like a tiny bright green numb, they get taller and taller and eventually when they are all the way up the leaf will un roll. At first it will be almost all a bright green, glossy and kind of thin but over time they develop just like the rest of the leaves!

Hey Penny is it really Yellow or just a lighter shade of green, new leaves tend to be very pail, thin and shiny when they come in f it is truely yellow it may be too much water!

I keep the soil moist for mine, but all the leaves are slowly crisping up? It’s in low light and I’ve only had it for three weeks. I really like this plant because it’s so beautiful but I’m struggling with it

Not sure if you have tried distilled water these can be sensitive to minerals in the water! Additionally if the humidity is low that could be a factor as well!

Hello, my plant seems like it struggling. It has a rust colored crust forming around the pot at the top of the soil. I don't thinkni planted it deep enough when I repotted it as well. The middle of that area seems a little grey and crystally 🤷‍♀️ my soil seems to wet and my leaves are browned on the edges. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have a brown thumb but the plant has sentimental value. Thanks

Hey Danyel, Im sorry to hear your plant is struggling, I am wondering if you are using tap water and if so if where you live the tap water has a lot of minerals in it (you can actually find out more about your local tap water here www.ewg.org/tapwater/) If that is the case it could be accounting for the discoloration in the soil as well as the brown edges, aside from that one thing I recommend for brown edges is to increase the humidity by the plant. I hope this gets things off to the right start I know these can be a little tricky!

Yes absolutely in fact i just cleaned mine off yesterday they get super dusty here! If you get water spots n them you can also use 1:1 mix of water and lemon juice. Thanks for watching hope that helps!

Hey there I personally like somthing with a little bit more water retention a general potting mix is great but I personally add a little more coconut coir!

So mine is definitely has been a little pot bound for a while and doest seem to hate it. Honestly many of my plants are a little pot bound my rule of thumb is if its doing well even if its looking a little tight I dont mess with it, thats just me I know some people like to yearly upsize their pots I personally just find my plants tend t get stressed from it!

For sure I actually do this all the time! One thing I will say is these plants don't like to be root bound in my experience so if you do that just make sure the pot has enough room!

For me this guy doesn't seem to like being root bound and it inhibits growth, I would say every year, but play it out for what seems right for your plant, if its doing fine I would say hold off but if growth seems to be slowing down it might be time!
