When I used to walk to primary school there was a fully restored one sitting in someone's driveway. I never saw it move. So these vehicles have a fond memory for me. This was in the north of Scotland. Very unusual to see any vehicles like this up here.

Plastic Soldier kit company makes 1/72 and 15mm variants of this with the option to make either the tracked truck, or the self propelled gun version. 😊

The Germans also mounted the PaK.38 5cm. anti-tank gun onto the Sd.Kfz.11 half track, in a similar arrangement. Some later variants also mounted the PaK.40. These unarmoured mobile anti-tank guns were nicknamed, "PaK Wagen", by the troops and were of dubious use as tank destroyers.

RSO + flakvierling, I wonder how this combo would fare.
@MichaelKalb-vn6ggАй бұрын
Not well, it was trialed and found lacking space for the loaders/ancillary crew. Which is funny considering the vehicles they applied the Flak unto.

The russians used this as blueprint for their arctic expedition vehicles.

Wrong, the German Raupenschlepper Ost, is a blueprint from the Russian STZ5. They start it in 1937.
@grantm651426 күн бұрын
I'd say it was almost certainly the other way around and the RSO was a response to the Soviet STZ-5 (and the bigger Komintern) gun tractors which had been around since the mid '30s. The Germans would almost certainly have tested captured examples and found them useful in the mud.

In theory, a great idea. Wider wheelbase needed. Instead of placing the vehicle on top of the tracks, install the tracks on the sides of the vehicle...lowers entire vehicle by a great amount, gives better stability and more protection for crew. It was a neat idea.
@obsidianjane441329 күн бұрын
It has a high ground clearance for its off-road or mud-road capability. Reworking the chassis to lower it would have defeated the purpose of a "just put the gun in the back of the truck", low cost easy SP ATG.
@abellseaman411428 күн бұрын
Nazis did not have the resources to make such an improved machine with wider wheel base etc............ if there had been resources to spare then Nazis would not have been looking for cheap and easy alternatives to building actual tanks!!!!!

Small but lethal. Edit: Why not they pick the 8.8 cm Raketenwerfer 43 for small and lighter to carry the weight?
@alekjanowski984728 күн бұрын
Yeah... The "Puppchen" was a rather underused concept in my eyes, as it had a larger range than the Panzershreck, and could be used pretty well in several other projects.

obviously, this was an emergency "solution" to the extreme mobility problems the germans had.......the later Jagdpanzer were more serious vehicles.

If your machine is targeted by a gun more than 50mm diameter, it makes no different either your machine have armor less than 75mm thick or none. It is better to have a small(hard to be observed), fast moving, easy maintenance, small fuel consumption(much silent) & cheap to produce machine. Therefore I like this war machine.
@grantm651426 күн бұрын
Sure, if it's a direct hit armour won't help you, but for shrapnel *any* armour is going to give you a better chance, instead of rattling on the outside it's going through you.

fun fact the US produced some 560, 000 gm 2.5 ton trucks during the war, the produced number of all variants of the topic vid raupenschlepper was 23,000 thru 1944, only 60 pre production anti tank variants for the pak40 model were ever delivered. clearly they needed more of these and fewer horses. am i right or what huh give it up cmon now, nice vid though we rarely see this vehicle any where as a feature let alone the star of the video

Take the low profile pak40 and stick it on a raised open platform , what could go wrong ? Had the rasputitsa been the only enemy to overcome it would have been a winner , unfortunately there was more than mud out to get them . Cursed by design . Reminds me of the ontos .
@matovicmmilan29 күн бұрын
The too narrow wheelbase makes it extremely tall/visible target, unstable, and unarmored platform not good enough to replace the towed artillery.
@lewcrowley371029 күн бұрын
Uh, so much wrong with this video. First off, towed Pak 40 did not like this vehicle for towing. It was loud, tall, and had mechanical issues. And this half-assed 'Marder' was not considered for full production. Do some research. Your videos are flawed.
