Very nice build, i want to go that route on my 2016 awd rav4, right now its just lifted 2'' with the Northwoods kit and BF goodrich trail terrains but once it starts getting older i want to make it into a fun softroader. So far ive taken it all thru baja without issues, there is a company building a true rear locker for the Rav4, it should make them far more capable.

Nice done mate! I have the same car and also very often I'm in the mountains with it and want to put some off-road upgrades. I have a question regarding the lifting - I've heard if you lift it there is a risk to start braking other parts like constant velocity joints and other kind of joints. So, is that true and do you need to change other parts like rear suspension/control arms or other parts? Also have you did any recons about combining springs and spacer for maximum lift off ?
@Trail-Warrior2 жыл бұрын
My RAV4 has 285,000 km with the factory CV joints... never had any problem about it. But since my RAV4 is lifted, the front control arms bushings don't last many years. Yes my RAV4 has combined lifted springs and spacers.... and no problem related to the lift.

I currently have a pretty much stock 02 Rav 4WD and have taken it on plenty of trails out here in the west coast. Mojave, Inyo ntl forest, Big Bear, Mammoth Mountain. Lots of rocky trails, plenty of sand, dirt, snow, etc. No lift, stock shocks and springs, 235/70/16 Cooper AT3 4s tires, stock wheels, rebuilt trans, and bolted on a Torsen typeII rear diff. It's been extremely capable on all my trail runs. Of course I know the limits of my rig and I'm not trying to rock crawl out here, but even before the Torsen swap, it handled just fine. The only down side is it is SLOW. Getting up big mountain passes is a pedal to the metal game the entire way up. It's the one thing thats making me want to sell soon, but it has taken me to places most others can't. If all you do is hit forest service roads and a few low grade rock gardens, ruts and such, you will be just fine with only tires and a lift. It's definitely more capable than people think. The short wheel base is what really helps the most.

Only the 1st Generation 5-speed Manual RAV4's were equipped with a 4wd system, which is why this build has the 1st gen transaxle. All automatic RAV4's, and the 2nd-gen stick have "on demand" AWD systems. I'd suggest watching this video to see the difference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJq9on6mrdasgJo

I have a 2004 all wheel drive w 250k miles on it automatic. Runs very solid. I was going to practically give this away, but with car prices as they are, I half thought of making this a project for off-roading. I’d be concerned that especially with something approaching 30” tires that low gear wouldn’t really be anywhere near low enough. What are your opinions. Are there any really crazy mods that folk have done to these to make them REALLY capable?
@Trail-Warrior2 жыл бұрын
Sadly the automatic transmission first gear is not as low as the manual transmission 1st gear. And the MK1 manual trans has a lower final drive ratio than the manual MK2. If you take a look on RAV4world forum, you will find some build threads with automatic RAV4's that does good for medium off-road and overland.

Your rav is bad ass !! I love it . I have the same car it's a 2.0 d4d 5 speed . Do you know if I can do the differential lock like your on my model?

I don't know which bolt-pattern the D4D engine has for the transmission. In america we only got the 1AZ and 2AZ engines, and they don't share the same bolt-pattern as the 3S engines found in the RAV4 first gen. So I had to open both (first ans 2nd gen) transaxles, then transfer the RAV4.1 gears and oil pump into the RAV4.2 transmission housing.... and had to modify oil passages to the t-case. I had to do a lot of grinding to the engine and t-case, because the RAV4.1 t-case is much bigger than RAV4.2. I also had to make custom front axles using inner RAV4.1 and outer RAV4.2 parts. The RAV4.1 locking/unlocking vacuum actuator is impossible to install with the 1AZ/2AZ engines. So I fitted a GM 4x4 electric actuator commanded by a switch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5TPqKCurdRrf9U

@@Trail-Warrior thanks 🙏 a lot buddy! I have some shopping to do 😁 my machinist can make me a adapter plate from grearbox to engine that's not a problem! So your RAV4 is rear wheel drive now and when you push the button on the dash the diff locks and it's 4x4?
@Trail-Warrior3 жыл бұрын
@@nickmarangos2475 The RAV4 is still a permanent all wheel drive, but when I lock the center diff: the front and rear differentials are locked together (cancel the center diff). So they always turn at the same speed whatever happens. When the center-diff is unlocked, the center diff is an open diff (to allow speed difference between front and rear diffs).

@@Trail-Warrior Since six months, I'm blasting around town in an Aixam Crossover 45 km/h microcar. I'm visually impaired, so authorities won't let me have a driving licence for a proper car, despite letting a repeat offender for DUI and driving on a suspended licence (caught seven times before on the latter), still go free after he kills someone (my classmate), while DUI, and still on suspended licence. Won't complain too much though. My first year insurance costs only a quarter of what a friend payed for his first car insurance ten years ago. And since than it's only gone up. If you're new on the job market, a proper car is pretty much unafordable now. And the gas station doesn't see me too often either. But I just wish there was more choice. If I had the technical knowledge to do it, I might have started tracking down a second one with a good frame, to turn into a mini RAV4, with proper 4wd. None of that electronic All Wheel Drive. I want a mechanical part time 4x4, limited slip diff both front and rear, and a rear locker. And when it's finished and good to hit the road, get rid of the first one.
